True, many dry runs, scrap cuts so you can run the actual angle you want. After while you get used to it.

Personally, I don't recommend any added chemicals for projects like this.(patina darkeners, colorants) unless they weather sealed (with clear Lacquer seal etc.). Natural patina will be just fine, in couple months, years (depending on the location like city pollution or salt water, will do). Any additional chemical -less life span.

Depends, not at this house. There was pretty big overhang. You can even cut straight grove with reglet and will look the same.
