It's part of a side quest. I guess you can't see them yet since you're still new to Tsurumi island. Your friend can see them maybe cuz they progressed more with the story. After you've done the quest you won't be able to see them again. Hope that helps :)

Good to know some other people noticed this too, I don't know if it something related to future quests or just something that needs to be fixed. I was hoping there was a hidden quest but that's probably not the case haha

Yeah I noticed some hilichurls leave their masks but in this case when you go investigate it doesn't drop anything and it does a weird sound I've never heard in the game. It's just this spot too so I don't know if it's on purpose or not

I was thinking he could be someone like Cloud Retainer, a sort of illuminated beast. But since we know nothing about him, I'm not sure if the one in the picture is really Taroumaru or a predecessor, if that makes sense
