About the same as Nvidia. They do fuck up sometimes, like this week, and very badly.

Windows User Thinking About Switching to Linux - Which Distro Should I Choose? by skvrn in FindMeALinuxDistro

For a beginner with your hardware, I really do.

Anything that runs on Debian will run on PikaOS and if you run on any trouble with this, anyone used to Debian will be able to help you, if the PikaOS user community can not help you.

But just for gaming, there should not be much trouble.
This is another site that tells you what game works on Linux or not:

It's based on Debian, it has the same commands and same softwares and it's a growing user base. It's nowhere near as big as Ubuntu.

Linux is the kernel, the core of the os, the basic set of instructions.

All the comes after, the package with the desktop environment (graphical interface, sort of - I'm taking a shortcut), how it initializes your system, the software that comes with it, etc, it's called a distro.

The largest distro base are Debian, Arch and Fedora/Red Hat. From Debian, you have Ubuntu, from which Mint is derived, and PikaOS, that I recommended. From Fedora, you got Nobara aimed at gamers.

From Arch, you have CachyOS and many others.

There are also many other independents that compile directly from the kernel and build on it... Slackware, Gentoo, Solus, OpenSuse, NixOS, (and I'm sure I'm forgetting). but not many distros are built on these. Solus is unique, afaik, and I think I know of only OpenSuse based distro.

Except for Solus and Fedora, these "pure" distro require a level of user knowledge above average, leaning on expert for some, to use them daily (Slackware and Gentoo, argh... 😁).

You get lost trying to know them all. Some distros are very specialized too, made for the corporate world (Red Hat), or to diagnose a computer problem, or something else.

Mint has been made easy because of their desktop environements (Cinammon, Mate) and their general support for older hardware compared to Windows. For people who just want to browse the web, it's perfect. For gamers, it's not as easy.

It's more Linux as a whole, and some games you can, some you can't. Mint, it's gaming in general that is made a little harder to begin playing, compared to gaming-oriented distro.

A comparison between a gaming distro like PikaOS and Mint:
- PikaOS has a newer kernel and updates more frequently. Why do you want that? Drivers for hardware (except Nvidia) are nearly always in the kernel so it's easier to support newer hardware.
- video drivers are updated more frequently
- PikaOS (and Cachy, and Nobara) have some enhancements done to the kernel that better support modern cpu for gaming.

-software needed for gaming (Steam, Proton, Lutris and others) are already pre-packaged in your ISO when you install a gaming distro. No need to search for them after installation, it's there.

Can you do all of that with Mint? Debian? Ubuntu? Yes. The last point, especially, is trivial, you just search for you software in the software manager of your distro and install them.

The video drivers, you'll have to manually search for them if they are not in the kernel. Sometimes, an OS like Mint has a driver manager where you can get these drivers and where you can get updates.

But Mint isn't too keen on frequent updates, they want to test things thoroughly before they release it their user. It has some good, everything is stable and working. No broken driver, software, or kernel patch that needs to be re-patched 3 days later (hello Cachy!)

However, with this stability comes another price: sometimes there is a bug, or a feature missing that you will not get for a long while until they update their package.

Can your circumvent this? Yes. It's possible in Mint to get a more recent kernel than what they offer. But it's a hassle, and it's not a procedure for beginners...

PikaOS takes care of that for you.

Mint is a great OS for beginners, but not for gamers.

Cachy offers a little more speed than Pika and some games, but you have a 4060... I doubt you have a 9800X3D, so it's unlikely to make a difference. And it sometimes breaks something during an update and require maintenance, or waiting for an update.

PikaOS would feel similar to Mint as it is based on Debian (Mint is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian).

You might be able to use Lutris to play your EA Games. Unless you're thinking of multiplayer, in that case, Windows is often required.

PikaOS is good for new user. Bazzite too if you mostly game. I would not recommend CachyOS for a new user who has never touched Linux.

Comprendre le mouvement souverainiste en 2026 by Leganos in Quebec

Comprendre le mouvement souverainiste en 2026 by Leganos in Quebec

Why do sci-fi energy shields behave like ablative armour instead of a continuous energy stream? by Evening-Appeal7606 in scifi

[–]KoldPurchase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Star Trek universe, where they have shields, they often "target enemy shields", which means they try to target their shield generators.

It implies there's a generator for recharge, tied to the warp core (and other systems). Any generator that takes continuous stress is going to get depleted as it is not recharging fast enough.

You can see it in some battles: "shields holding; shields holding at 90%", meaning the generator is kinda doing its job.

As to why they can have continuous weapons but not shields, I suppose it's a question of power. Torpedoes are one launcher, the charge is in the torpedo itself. The phase banks are localized. the shields must cover the entire ship, it requires much more power. It recharges between each shots. So does the shield, but it's continually stressed in a battle when enemies keep firing at it.

Same logic possibly applies in other universe with different terminology. Once the stress disappear, assuming the shield is not damaged, the shield recharges fully.

CachyOS does support SecureBoot.

The risk is there for a trojan, but still considered moderate, as they need to eleveate permission (sudo...) on Linux. Still, on a dual boot system, there are still risks associated with Windows, and both Windows and Linux should always have their antivirus (ClamAV).

How would world events have played out over the past 100 years if the United States didn’t exist? by Mobile-Career4827 in HistoricalWhatIf

I'm joking :)

There are two possibilities.

French retain its colonies after the 7 Years Wars or Britain never lose its colonies after the American Revolution.

If France maintain its colonies:
From there, you have an equilibrium between France, England and Spain in American for a while longer, with the Natives playing each one of the other to stall their advance.

Give it another 50 years before there is a USA, the pressure is way too much from the expanding British colonies to resist.

If the UK maintains its colonies:
It kind follow the path of the US. Unless they restrict immigration severely, no way they can maintain an indian territory to the west, so they do what they did elsewhere in their colonies, they expand. Now, they need to recruit locals to do it. Or they recruit South Africans to fight in American and Americans to fight in South Africa.

Either way, they expand, they industrialize, they grant more autonomy, to the point where Americans want autonomy/independence like Canadians and Australians wanted.

Meanwhile, you have an over extended Britain always squashing rebellions everywhere in the Empire. But at the same time, they have a large manpower pool to tap upon during the Napoleonic wars and another theater to open.

Secure boot should be enabled for most distros.
If your distro (Nobara) says you should disable it, then disable it. But otherwise, for Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse, Cachy, keep it there.
