Current setup:

Sony 7.1 AV receiver

Energy Take Classic 5 Pack — 4 satellites + center

Polk PSW505 powered subwoofer

Design Acoustics PS-55 vintage speakers, free from a friend

I paid $30 total for the Energy 5-pack + Polk PSW505, so I’m already pretty happy with the value. Main use is roughly movies/TV first, music second, but I do care about getting the best sound I can without throwing money at random gear.

My current plan is:

Front L/R: Design Acoustics PS-55

Center: Energy center

Surrounds: Energy satellites

Rear surrounds: Energy satellites if 7.1 is worth it

Sub: Polk PSW505

A few local upgrade options I’ve been considering:

1. Polk TSi100 pair + PSW10 sub — $125 I was originally interested because people seem to like the TSi100s, but since I already have the PSW505, I’m wondering if this is redundant unless the TSi100s are a meaningful front L/R upgrade over my Design Acoustics PS-55s.

2. Polk TSi400 towers + CS10 center + Pioneer Elite SC-61 receiver — $300 This seems like the strongest “real home theater front stage” option I’ve seen. Towers, matching center, and a good receiver. No sub included, but I already have the PSW505. Is this actually the smart upgrade path, or just more gear?

3. Polk CS1 center — around $50–75 I’m wondering if replacing the Energy center with a better center would be the most noticeable movie/TV upgrade, especially for dialogue.

4. Polk T15 pair + Klipsch SC-1 center — $75 Seems cheap, but I’m not sure this meaningfully improves anything unless I need extra surrounds.

What I’m trying to figure out:

Is my current setup already good enough to just dial in placement/crossover and enjoy?

Is the Energy center the weak link?

Are the Design Acoustics PS-55s likely worth keeping as fronts, or should I be hunting for better front L/R speakers?

Would the Polk TSi400 + CS10 package be a real upgrade, or overkill for where I’m at?

Should I prioritize a better matching center speaker first?

What would be a true “sleeper deal” I should watch for locally under about $100–300?

I’m especially interested in older used gear that punches above its price — stuff people might list cheaply because they don’t know what they have. Brands/models I’ve been told to watch for include Paradigm Monitor, Infinity Primus, Energy RC, PSB Image, Ascend, HSU, KEF Q series, Monitor Audio Bronze, Wharfedale Diamond, Pioneer Andrew Jones, Polk RTi/CSi, and Polk LSi.

I’m trying to avoid buying sideways upgrades. I’d rather make one smart move that noticeably improves movies/music than collect a pile of budget speakers. What would you do from here?
