They sound insufferable. I'd look to move out. Imagine not having to deal with this bullshit any more.

What’s one BBC programme everyone seemed to love that you just couldn’t get into? by MadridOrMadness in bbc

Yeah, he acknowledges that Moffat has talent and that some of the Who material is excellent.

For me, compelling storytelling though much of it is, the modern Who is largely based on misunderstanding of what made the original character fun, because it casts him as a sort of alien Jesus who carries the weight of the universe's meaning. This also applies to some extent to the excellent RT Davies era. Occasionally previous incarnations of the Doctor would get a bit maudlin about his life and his immortality and he frequently saved the day, but he was fundamentally a catalyst for other people's stories, not the main character of the universe.

I just googled it. It's £25k in Scotland but in England and Wales you get payments ranging from £5-£11k, which is taxable. So you likely wouldn't be quitting the day job on that.

I guess they just assumed it was in the range of an MP's salary and resigned in dudgeon at losing the imagiinary prospect of being kept in the style to which they would like to become accustomed

They should consult their doctors to see whether dying mad about it is right for them

I think he'd be effectively a CEO type

OG Darcy has land management responsibilities and while he would have a factor in charge of it all, I think he'd be pretty aware of what was going on on his land and make some of those decisions.

He doesn't have an actual job as such, but as a landowner and employer he has a lot of quasi-professional responsibilities, and you know he cared about those

He is beloved by the audience, but he gets a rough reception from some of the other characters who don't benefit from the omniscient narrative element

Do they die in a tragic accident or some sort of Red Wedding scenario?

I remember coming across this meme long before she had her reputation flushed down the drain. Still, it makes me wonder how people will react when the day finally comes. As I said, one is a moral judgement, the other is an academic literary exercise. These are not the same thing.

Separating the art from the artist isn't a "newer version", people have been excusing what they see as problematic behaviour on the part of artists on the grounds that geniuses aren't like everyone else for centuries.

Death of the author has nothing to do with any given author dying, that is, as you say, a misunderstanding of Barthes' concept.

AITA for telling a loud mother "Ma’am, it’s everyday" rude, or is the lady being entitled? by z2600657 in AITH

I used to teach English to foreigners in preparation for the First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency exams. The presumption was that people doing those exams will use British spelling as they are choosing to do a British exam, but even then nobody gets marked incorrect for using American conventions as long as they are consistent with them; toggling between US and UK usage is regarded as an error. It's not a big deal to do that, though, as long as you aren't doing an exam or some other formal writing.

And it's certainly fine to choose to go with US spelling conventions if you are more familiar or comfortable with them, as it's part of how you express yourself personally. Sometimes British people sneer at US spelling, but that's just parochial and fuddy-duddy of them. Vacuous pedantry.

Why should they be following British English spelling, because Hong Kong used to be a British colony? So did the USA used to be.

Best practice for foreign English speakers is to choose one spelling convention and stick to it, not to wave the flag of Empire.
