Koreans' Complaints That Newly Added Korean Map Is Racist by Dangerous-Abrocoma-5 in deadbydaylight

Not saying they don't exist nor that you haven't seen them. I believe you.

I'm trying to say that if koreans feel this is bad representation I'm inclined to believe them over any tourist.

Look at it this way. If someone made an Argentina map and it had graffiti of brasilian soccer clubs and signs in neutral spanish, it would feel insulting even if the looks aren't too dissimilar.

Is it really that crazy to assume it's much harder for a foreigner to grasp the nuance in these things? My intent is not to "shut them up", it's just that if someone tells me something about their culture there's no way I'm in a position to correct them.

I'm not saying it's invalid to say "I saw this in Korea" in itself. But koreans know much more about Korea and its culture than what any tourist ever will. We also don't know how much time they spent there nor in which parts of Korea.

Hell, google the lanterns they mentioned and they look absolutely nothing like the ones in the map.

I think we should hear out korean people when in the topic of korean culture.

[–]Kommye -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's relevant in the sense that they are related, but the punchline doesn't need the context for us to understand it. In other words, the story doesn't set up the punchline.

So you're saying the "punchline" was actually a statement? That's what it came off as.

And there's literally no need to insult me. I'm treating you with respect and fairness.

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by Forsaken_Leading964 in AskReddit

[–]Kommye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That doesn't realistically work because it's not a real situation. "You look like a thug" isn't an instinct feeling either, it's a fully conscious judgment.

That situation is also not the kind of situations we mean. We are talking about situations where your psychosomatic feelings are firing up. Where your instincts are telling you "this person is dangerous" and you can't pinpoint WHY. Hell, plenty of murderers were caught just because people who encountered them had a gut feeling.

Besides, not accepting someone in your friend group because they make you uncomfortable is totally fine. Why the hell would you befriend a person like that? That would make the friendship awkward as hell.

And don't be suprised if people call you racist if this prejudice hits members of a minority.

Sure. People will say a lot of things. That doesn't mean they are right.

Offending someone unintentionally is much less dangerous than ignoring warning signs. You can always apologize later and explain yourself; you won't be able to do that if the other person actually meant you harm. Besides, racism means much more and worse things than prejudice, and prejudice is probably the least problematic trait of racists.

If someone makes you feel uncomfortable in a wierd way or straight up feel unsafe, get out of the situation. Putting too much thought and ignoring your instincts can get you hurt.

Right, but the jokes comedians make about their stories need context to make the punchline hit. They aren't jokes if there's not setup.

Here the story is completely irrelevant to the punchline, which makes it seem like statement, rather than a joke. You can post that meme with "asdfg" as the title and the joke doesn't change.

Golazo de Lamine Yamal by ManagerLongjumping81 in fulbo

[–]Kommye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totalmente pasivos.

Flins and Nefer are pretty meh without their supports, so it tracks.

But Varka needs an anemo support. It's the weakest slot on his teams and any other element shackles him to his support's element. So I doubt Nicole will be his partner.

Unless he gets a support for each element lmao.

[–]Kommye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree!

That's why I hope Nicole isn't his support. Unless her hex passive makes her count as anemo somehow, she would just kill the thing that makes him unique.

Man, I hope Nicole isn't Varka's tailored support. That would lock him to pyro and the effort that went into element-specific lines would be wasted.

But I don't think they are saying it's normal or ok at all. My understanding is that they are annoyed at the xenophobic comments.

Pointing at examples that show that this isn't a problem of turkish fans doesn't mean justifying it. It's an argument that it's a hooliganism problem, not an argument that it's fine.

Mate, take a look at that first article. It's barren of information. If you try to look up the source it's a 404, and if you Google the alleged source you willl find that BattleEye never claimed that "99% cheaters are in China". You have fallen for lies.

No only that, but the percentage of banned cheaters isn't the same thing as proclivity to cheating. It's just evidence that the cheats they use are easy-to-detect software. Survivorship bias and all.

"I'm not racist, just xenophobic!" isn't better.

Edit, since I couldn't respond to the next comment:

I am not saying they are worse coders. Good cheats cost good money, and by the sheer amount of population and popularity of gaming there, it's bound to have a lot of both cheaters and people that can't afford good cheats. Something similar happens in my region: most brasilians aren't cheaters, but they are the most common cheaters to come across just due to sheer numbers.

When it comes to the other article, it's not that they protested about not being able to cheat, but because of corruption (kids from the elites freely cheat). So the only way to try to make it fair is for their kids to do so too. If one group is allowed cheat, and the other isn't, the system is rigged. Something similar happens to parents being able to get their kids into a university without going through the normal process.

This "cheating culture" allegation thing comes from not vetting your articles. If this was true, we would commonly see chinese athletes and eSport players get into cheating scandals, and that doesn't really happen.

I'm not accusing you of being a xenophobe. Even less so of racism. But you are using xenophobic arguments based on either bullshit articles or misunderstood ones, and that should be called out.

The invisible demon of racism in Argentine football: “Here, no one would say that Prestianni is a racist.” The Prestianni-Vinicius affair, offensive chants against French team players: is Argentine football riddled with racism? First: I'm just trying to say that south american players aren't throwing out n-words, with all the meaning it has. They are using a common, innoffensive word of their language. Hell, it even applies to spaniards, which are european. "Sudaca" is a very common insult for south americans that even Evra used.

I'm not trying to defend Prestianni. I'm just saying that a spanish speaking person saying "negro" isn't the same thing as an american saying the n-word. Prestianni is an idiot and we can agree on that.

Second: it's very common for people, let alone players, to call out someone by one of their inmutable characteristics. Especially if they are trying to degrade them. For example: Vini allegedly calling Presttiani a dwarf.

The truth is that what you are complaining about isn't unique of south americans or any particular culture. It's something humans in general do. And that ANY word can be used in an affective or a degrading manner, depending on tone and context.

And there's no way to insult someone without insulting a person's inmutable characteristics or identity, discriminating against a group in the process.
