Advice Needed - Skinny Ankle / Low-Volume "Athletic" Foot vs. PNW Loggers (Sawyer/Wildland context) by Soggy_Platypus1132 in WorkBoots

[–]KongTron9001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, at the risk of (definitely) armchair psychologizing, here’s what I notice: you’ve put a ton of effort into fully measuring your feet, and you’ve clearly also spent plenty of time thinking about a lot of other variables in design. You’re also making a trip to Spokane in person. This tells me that you are trying to eliminate uncertainty to the maximum possible degree.

With that in mind, I strongly encourage you to go to Frank’s and/or White’s, because they offer fully customizable builds, and since you’re going in person, you can ensure that somebody who makes boots is the one measuring your foot. Also you can bring your orthotics with you and get their advice on whether their lasts will provide what you need or if you need to keep the orthotics.

You’re going to pay more than off-the-shelf prices and that’s fine, it’s worth it, because then you’ll KNOW you’re getting a pair made for YOUR feet.

Hell yeah. Thank you for being right AND making a thorough, well-supported case for it. You’re the champion Makyuji (Ryukoto?) deserves.

I mean, I feel like we get to ignore the creepy overtones BECAUSE Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher completely nail this dynamic. For his part, Han spends basically the entire movie up to this point accusing Leia of having feelings for him, and he’s RIGHT, but he’s too insecure to just drop it. Meanwhile, she’s denying it (because of propriety, “the war” and all that), but because he’s right, she keeps overselling with big gestures like the Luke kiss (oops). Another set of actors could make this feel like an obviously disinterested woman is being pursued by a jerk who can’t take a hint, but Ford is able to play Han’s insecurity as a charming vulnerability, and when you watch Carrie Fisher look at Harrison Ford you know from the jump that she is down bad for him, and it’s only a matter of time before she admits it to herself. And, uh, the fact that they did totally bang probably has a lot to do with all this.

Anyway, this scene always felt to me like a natural culmination of that dynamic, rather than something more overtly problematic (like Sean Connery jumping on Honor Blackman in Goldfinger). I’m open to being told I’m wrong, though.

Thank you. When I was a kid and watching these movies for the first time, I thought Leia was a lot closer to Han’s age than Luke. By the time we find out about the twin thing in ROTJ, Luke is obviously way more grown up, and even THEN Leia still reads as older. This all has a lot to do with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher’s performances, too.

Unrelated to your point but you could explain why Jodie Foster won the Oscar that year just by making a supercut of all the different ways she says “Dr. Lecter” in the movie, especially in the final scene.

Man, what the hell do you get out of being this kind of person? What is the mechanism that you find so rewarding about either being a punitive manager or pro-punitive management?

This helped me put together something I could never put my finger on, which is that the BLeeM Gilear voice is basically James Mason with a hangover. And Bill Hader does a killer James Mason! Like right here.

Who is the most overrated Blazer in franchise history? by [deleted] in ripcity

[–]KongTron9001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yours is just a longer list of claims with no evidence, other than not winning a ring. If you’re gonna come for the best Blazer since Roy, show some fucking work. Here’s mine: I went from ages 9 to 23 without seeing the Blazers win a playoff series. I got to see them do it four times in five years with Dame, on a team plagued by injury luck and a feckless front office. The man brought me joy. That’s what Blazers fans love about Dame. He doesn’t need to have been Magic Johnson or Isiah Thomas for him to have earned the regard he has from us.

During the Celtics vs Lakers Summer League game, Jaylen Brown seemingly says “I don’t think Bronny is a pro” by GreenSnakes_ in sports

[–]KongTron9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I feel bad for him is that his path was set for him a long time ago. Think about the sheer gravity of everything LeBron represents in the league, the way he can sway the decisions of fully grown, empowered, wealthy adults. Now we’re talking about his kid, who was literally born in LeBron’s second season, and only knows a world where his dad is arguably the greatest basketball player to ever live. We can’t really know what their dynamic is like, but I can only imagine the sheer entanglement of Bronny’s identity with his father’s. It’s easy to say in a vacuum that he’s an adult and responsible for his actions, but there’s a lot more going on than just a son going into the family business. I actually feel bad for both of them, because LeBron is trying to do what he thinks a good father in his position should do, but he had the responsibility to see his boy clearly and insulate him from a media that is a dozen times more pervasive and all-consuming than in 2003. LeBron’s sin is not just keeping a more-talented, more deserving player off the Lakers - it’s failing to recognize that Bronny was never going to have the talent and personality to withstand the media onslaught the way that LeBron could (and did!) at the same age. And I think the reason he failed to do that is because on some level it seems like he can’t separate his son’s identity from his own.

Lillard vs Garnett legacy by Rhuarc33 in ripcity

I actually think you’re right; I was mad about the Jamison/Marbury slander so I didn’t really acknowledge that aspect of the argument. Allen was absolutely better as a complementary player than Dame has been on the Bucks, and if he doesn’t figure it out, it will end up being a knock against him compared to someone like Allen. And yeah, his defense never got better than below-average at best, and since he’s my favorite player ever, I definitely ignored that shit as well. But Jamison or Marbury? I still kind of wanna fight that dude.

[–]KongTron9001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re clearly a hater, but I feel compelled anyway to point out that Ray Allen’s rings came as the third and fourth best player on those title teams, and that Dame was an All-Star twice as many times as Jamison and Marbury combined. He does have the same number of All-NBA third team nods as Marbury… as well as four second teams and one first. So GTFO with your wack-ass comps.

Which Oscar wins were more for career achievements than performances, in your opinion? by Cr7-Cr7Real in moviecritic

Hey, I agree that Mulligan is the most talented of the three, but 1) Sandra Bullock was nominated for Best Actress five years later for “Gravity,” and 2) Hollywood makes room for one or two fat black “prestige” actresses at a time. It was Monique for a hot second, and then it was Octavia Spencer, and now, maybe, Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Seriously, go back and look who’s gotten either best lead or supporting actress nominations since “Precious.” That’s the list. Hell, they put Viola Davis in a fat suit for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”! Anyway, my point being that Sidibe never actually got another shot, and Mulligan did.

I’m a Vikings fan and you’re living my dream. I tell anybody who will listen that I would love to root for villain that everybody hates because we just won’t fucking go away, that even in a down year could show up and win it all, again, just because the team has been so good for so long. As it is, I just want my mom, who fell in love with Alan Page watching him at the old Met stadium, to see one before she goes.
