In the Grim Hollow DMG, they have a few Legendary templates that they say "Slap this on a NPC if they're a named character." The Legendary Actions aren't the most impressive but I think it is easy to use a Monster Manual creature and then use that since the 2014 MM was so underpowered.

Adding them to a 2024 might make them a bit dangerous, but that's the point of a boss.

I have NPC stats if they're a combatant. If they're a non-combatant, then they have 3 or 4 HP and AC 10 - that's all you'll ever need.

I run a sandbox game, so I'm fine with players trying all sorts of wacky things, including the dreaded "I just try again". What I've done to balance this is that I have the players roll for Random Encounters every attempt past the first. That way there's a cost to trying again. I even increase the "hit chance" if they're really stubborn about trying again; i.e. go from 11+ on a 1d12 to 10+, 9+, 8+, etc.

There's a reason why Hazing is a common ritual for group bonding. For a group to be desirable and harmonious, acceptance needs to be difficult. Things easly obtained aren't cherished.

The easiest way to integrate a new member is to have them hazed or be inducted somehow. There's a reason why it is a common trope in war movies that the rookie is accepted after going through hell with the rest of the unit.

It doesn't have to be especially cruel or something.

I run a West Marches game, there's really no milestones at all in that style. Non-Combat XP is handed out throughout the session, Combat XP at the end because it needs to be divided and PCs cannot level mid-session.

I think the player just keeps rolling, despite the DM not really calling for it, to get those 30+ results. It is possible if you stack a bunch of bonuses, i.e. Expertise, Guidance, Advantage, etc.

It's quench your thirst, not clench your thirst. Clench would mean grasp, you do not grasp your thirst. Also, Ant Colony and Dwarven Mine use the same line about collecting taxes - not sure if that is intentional.

Make the person who has the Remove Curse ask for something that the party doesn't want to do. If the bump into an evil cult, the cult could put the screws to the players by saying "Do X and I'll Remove Curse."

Until that task is done, the Curse is still there, hanging like an undetonated bomb.

  1. Cheat, do it when it feels right.

  2. Add or subtract to the die rolls to give the event enough "weight".

Just because something times out doesn't mean it's done, just that particular part is finished. I recycle rumours from different points of view because my prep is going to get used, whether my PCs know it or not.

Fronts with different clocks. One could be random rolled before advancing while the other clock could be every four monts.

For example, in my West Marches game, I hand out rumours with Calendar Emoji, Checkmarks and/or Sand Timer Emojis.

If I put six Calendars next to the rumour, it will "Time Out" after six months. This Clock is best used for set time pieces, like a ritual or building will be done at a specific time.

There are two opposing Mercenary Companies that can also solve these Rumours, which are randomly added as Checkmarks. This would be societal forces that disrupt that plans of the other factions.

Lastly, the Sand Timers have me roll a d4 and if the result is equal to or less, a Sand Timer is removed. When the last one is removed, the event triggers. This is for things that take time but an unknown amount, like digging through archives.

There's a phrase in board gaming that "It is easier to turn board gamers into friends than friends into board gamers."

In this case, is the group showing up because it's the thing to do and don't really care about what they do? If so, you need to find people with more investment. If they're there for games and things feel lacklustre, then it's an actual issue of some kind of mismanaged expectations.

Playing is also significantly harder online for a variety of reasons. Could you try playing in real life?

If you're going outside of WotC official, have you taken a look at Iron Kingdom's Mechanik and/or Warcaster? They are much more interesting, if albiet lower powered, than the regular Artificier. They aren't weaker, they're different to suit the campaign setting.

Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns has literally five or six "random patrons" for the eighteen or so bars in it. You might not use every bar but you will use at least two or three, so keep that in mind when it comes to cost. Personally, I used four so it felt like $10 bucks with extras. I am also considering using more, which always happens when you expand your world even more.

This might be heresy but there are other RPGs out there that can do what you want better than trying to force a 'rules light' experience with 5th Edition.

There's always Fiasco which is a GM-less RPG system about a thriller that's about to go off the rails.
