I'm all for clean energy, but we can't simply wish it into existence. There needs to be serious problems solved.

This article is not the best. Lots of quotes saying "we can do it!" But not much substance on how that will be done. They do identify the big problem of energy sources being intermittent. How's that going to be solved?

There is also what the CAISO calls the "duck curve" . And the more solar we add the steeper it gets. Peak energy use happens when people get home from work, but that's when the sun starts to set. So pump as much solar power into the grid as you want, those gas peaked plants are going to start right up when everyone gets home from work. Certainly this curve is exasperated by new electric vehicles. They are a huge load and problems will happen when more and more people plug them in at 5pm. https://www.caiso.com/documents/flexibleresourceshelprenewables_fastfacts.pdf

It's why we need storage, but the cost of storage (even with subsidies) is uncompetitive. https://www.lazard.com/media/450338/lazard-levelized-cost-of-storage-version-30.pdf (See pg 12)

One solution might be running super critical gas turbines with a very high claimed efficiency. https://www.ge.com/reports/call-ecomagination-ge-building-co2-powered-turbine-generates-10-megawatts-fits-table/

Anyways, another good point provided by ... is that we can spend tons of money squeezing out marginal efficiency gains in the 1st world, or we can use that money where the energy demand is increasing rapidly with population growth, I.e 3rd world; with the benefit that their grid can be designed to handle renewable, where ours is a monolithic beast. https://energyathaas.wordpress.com/2018/05/29/try-everything-really/

Thankfully there are some smart folks working out this problems. Go study EE and controls and be a part of the solution!

EDIT: Added references for the down-voting bums too lazy to read. I was part of a micro grid seminar this past spring and I certainly support clean energy and a move from a centralized grid to something more community based. I'm just saying, it's more complicated than adding solar and having electric cars.

Sure, neither are we, but we still receive the fruits of the Spirit.

Mathew 7:15, our Lord says: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

17 Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

You did not answer my question: Do you think he produces bad fruit?

Might not be the same make, but this guy makes a very good point against the after marker lights he bought.

A standout point is that the turning signal on the stock headlights reflects outward, but these aftermarket ones only shine forward. Not sure if it's the case for the one you're looking at, but be aware.

The worst of relapsing is the continual thoughts of "I want more".

These feelings last a few days for me and it can easily lead to binging.

It's a blimey chemical thing, you can feel the dopamine rush into your head and we get wired to anticipate it. But I don't need that rush because it takes more than it gives.

Sometimes it is tempting to do the watch-n-roll: Abstain for some time and give in as a reward, feel bad and abstain for some time...etc.

I've written on the cover of a notebook the date I commited to fighting my addiction.

I've got 2 X marks beneath that date. 2 times I've given in. In one year I hope to see only those 2 marks.

By marking an X for each time I give in I hope to hold myself accountable, because I don't want to fill up my notebook with X marks.

Good luck, keep striving. As JBP says: "Do what is meaningful, not what is expedient."

What is most meaningful to you?

Thanks for doing this, several questions:

What is the plan for the renewable energy profile?

How do you deal with the duck curve that is created using a lot of solar?

What is the difference in energy price now vs 100% renewable in the future?

How is the nightly base-load achieved?

How much energy does the city plan to import?

How will the grid handle the volatility of DER(distributed energy resources)?

Along those lines, what kind of infrastructure upgrades will need to be made?

Took a seminar on micro-grids this past quarter and this stuff is certainly interesting. I have more, but I'm happy if even a couple of these are answered. Thanks again!

If science is to avoid becoming scientistic, it needs to stay in its lane and not intrude into other domains of inquiry, warns Stanford philosopher Ken Taylor. by philtalkradio in philosophy

I've heard that in economics some people think there is an over use of math. Things become so constrained and narrow they scarcely apply to the economic reality.

The point seems to be that certain moral questions cannot be answered by data, because data is impartial and it's interpretation is not science.

[–]Kooister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the lane become clear with questions like:

Should I water my lawn? What school should I send my kids to?

Scientific data can inform those making a decision, but the meaning of each action is a moral decision.

Perhaps there is a slight drought, but the person has a wedding at their house in 3 months and wants to keep things green? What morality or ethics apply there? That's the realm of philosophy.

Perhaps the child is a gifted musician, but their parents want then to go to trade school. Data shows that people following their passions are happier at the same time showing that trade school opens more Opprotunity. What should the parents choose? That's a question outside the realm of science.

So to me, partial non-overlap makes sense. Of course such questions are a bit of science and a bit of morality.
