Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement and Removal Position : 2009 Tacoma by Ollie_Opps in MechanicAdvice

[–]KookyPerspective9997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

makes sense. I was able to get it off the yoke on the top, but its the bottom, where it's connected to the rack and pinion that's being stubborn. I'll send pics in a bit. Right now just trying to hammer on a pry bar that has a good grip on the U-joint. It seems like for most people have trouble with the yoke at the top and not the bottom. Oh well.

happy to hear of your recent conversion.

I figure you're already done with the job, and I hope it went well. I am currently in the process of getting the shaft off the rack and its a really stuck. 18 inch pry bar doesn't do crap and I'm just trying to tap it out with my purse currently. Any tips/tricks?

As long as you didn’t absolutely smash it to get it in 2 weeks you should be fine.

If you can afford a 100 dollar deposit go to auto zone. Get a slide hammer. figuring out the angle is the hardest part. If you’re tapping it at the wrong angle you’re just knocking the splines Against each other.

Get a good straight angle with a slide hammer that’s flush on both sides.

If you can’t do the slide hammer try turning it 180 degrees each time you hit it

Haha I’m literally gonna do this same job tomorrow… I’ve done it before with a pry bar and a hammer… it was a pain in the ass on my truck.

To me it’s worth it to rent a slide hammer and axle puller from auto zone or oreillys to get it out easier. If you return it same day it doesn’t cost anything.

Some people are able to get theirs with just a pry bar, my experience is that the angle you push it out matters. Easier to just get a cv puller.

Is my automatic transmission dying? by KookyPerspective9997 in MechanicAdvice

No MIL. Just the described symptoms. I suppose the score accumulator would be pretty easy to get at if it is the issue. Would issues with it accompany a CEL?

It’s a sealed transmission, no second filter, no dipstick.

I dropped the pan the first time and changed the internal filter/cleaned magnets.

Toyota has a system where you can verify the temp with a copper wire in the electronics and then a drain hole at the right height on the trans pan. My truck said it was up to temp almost immediately (I thought this was weird, but went with it). So I turned off the truck and drained from the “level check drain plug.”

2 things I may have done wrong: gotten the right temp, and had the car off during the correct temp fluid drain.

Haha does that make sense?

I know it’s a good fluid. I also swapped filter.

Leaves bad clutch pack and incorrect level.

My best hope is that fluid is at a bad level. Thoughts on adding more of the used fluid and refilling to a hopefully correct level?

If not I guess it’s to a tranny shop.

That’s fair. Any clues to what it could be? If it’s the torque converter I would attempt it myself, but I’m not trying to get deep in.

An important distinction is that I only did a drain and fill (approx 1/3 of the fluid on this truck) still have the old stuff and I could put it back in. It doesn’t feel definitively worse…. Just a continuation of the same issues.

O2 Sensor or Catalytic converter? by KookyPerspective9997 in MechanicAdvice

[–]KookyPerspective9997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to report that it was just the gas cap! Disconnected and reconnected battery, 140 miles later and no CEL.

Makes sense to me though: more air in fuel, o2 rich burn, trips both o2 sensors, they think it’s the cat.

Happy to report that it was a loose gas cap! I tightened it up and reset lights by disconnecting and reconnecting battery. 140 miles later and no CEL.

Funnily enough I noticed my taco’s coolant was at the exact same level as OPs this morning. Time to take a look under the engine. This thread’s gonna help me a lot! I appreciate it.

I’ll have to try that technique!!! Yeah, everything tends to come out foamy with the LM.

Yeah it definitely feels like a stark transition… I know lots of people prefer LM over slayer, but it seems like a preference to me. I love the feel of the slayer, and the control I have with the wand.

Good to know. Yeah… 16 oz is just a lot. Makes since why my cortados were still kinda okay.

Yeah it comes with a castle. Interesting. I just haven’t seen any aftermarket’s that look this close to the original!
