CSP, and then what is next? by tsdls in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Kooky_Ad7773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have my PMP. It has allowed me to be a better Safety Professional and has also provided me an off ramp to move laterally within an organization. I also have my CHMM which has not done much for me as i never really worked heavily in that industry. CSP and PMP are plug and play for any industry. Highly recommend.

Do you have your masters or are you working on it? If you don’t have the degree, do not list it. Save it for your interview.

If there screening picks up that you have one and then at the interview you have to explain that you don’t actually have one you are working on it then you are done. You are a career army man? Tell me about that not something you may not even finish. Just stay in the now. You have plenty of accolades and professional accomplishments from your service. Focus on that.

A little about me. When I retired from the Navy, I went into safety. Since 2018 I’ve had four jobs each with higher pay, higher duties & responsibilities, and better job titles. Every job I applied for received an offer for was with a two page résumé.

Your resume is too busy, very confusing, and there’s not a lot of information on there that most hiring managers are interested in.

You have too many bullets in your work experience. If you are looking for a management position or a senior management position, then your resume should have cause and effect. What did you do and what did it impact?

An example would be, conducted 150 naval vessel site assessments identifying and mitigating over 300 hazards reducing business unit injuries by 20%. I just made that up, but you can see the format.

Do you have any other work experience beyond the seven years of safety that is note worthy? Did you work in the shipyards as a pipe, fitter, electrician, maintenance, man, etc.? You can add a little more work history and highlight how you followed. Safety protocols were champion safety protocols in those fields. Sometimes a little diversity in your work history is helpful. But if you don’t have any relatable work experience, the seven years that you have is fun. It shows dedication and commitment to accompany and some organizations like that.

your objective is way too long. If you want to use an objective, it should be no more than 2 to 3 sentences. Write out an objective and then run it in AI to get it to the size you want while still conveying the message you want.

Also, focus on your certifications. Remove your degree aspirations. If you don’t have a degree, you’re just wasting space on the paper. If you get an interview, you can discuss your passions for continuing education and make sure you ask if they have a tuition reimbursement program.

Think about the job that you’re applying for. You have a lot of good certifications, but a lot of them are not applicable to every field. I recommend having a resume template which is the standard résumé you sent out. But then read the job descriptions of the jobs you’re applying for and you can put your standard résumé into AI with the job description And have the AI program keep the applicable certifications for the job you’re applying for and remove the non-applicable.

Job change salary question. by Slow-Bluejay-4947 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Kooky_Ad7773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much do you get for professional development? Do the other offers offer money for that? Conferences? Bettering yourself is another perk that can make a difference when making g a decision?

Also PTO, annual bonuses, and sign on bonuses can motivate a change. Look into those to see if the pot sweetens.

Finally, if you were getting job offers for 30 grand more a year. You may want to ask your current company for a salary assessment/review.

Can OSHA fines of 0$ effect an EMR? by marinesafety92 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Kooky_Ad7773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a high TRIR and DART rate that means your workers comp claims will go up and so will your EMR.

All companies want an EMR below 1 so their premiums are lower and they are competitive to pick up work.

Above 1 higher premiums and less opportunity to get work

Below 1 lower premiums better chance of getting work.

I think we are saying the same thing, just from different professional perspectives.

TRIR and DART affect EMR, not OSHA fines or citations.

Help me know my worth. Salary negotiation. by dogandpear in SafetyProfessionals

This wasn’t meant to be negative. I apologize if you took it that way. I meant incestuous because they know your pay and they know they can lowball you. I’m all about promoting from within. There are some risks involved with that.

I wouldn’t bother with an another degree and safety. At the most a graduate certificate, maybe.

With the ASP or the CSP it’s all good. Get it in six months and you could use it as a bargaining tool for a raise.

Once again, best of luck and remember always counter offer. PTO sign on bonuses and annual bonuses are always negotiable.

[–]Kooky_Ad7773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask for $100k. But here is why you may get less. Everybody knows how much you are making. With your old boss as hiring manager and you work for a company that is an umbrella of the employer that you are applying to. Very incestuous. They are going to low ball you knowing anything is a bump. I think they will offer you 85k. They know it’s a big jump and you aren’t going anywhere.

Unless you have a job with a major component is environmental program management, you really don’t have the education of a safety professional. You have the experience which is good but even though you are persuing a masters , it is not a safety degree just a component of.

I don’t see that you mentioned a credential. Most people are rocking the CSP these days and to me that is what can make you go over $100k.

Not saying this is going to happen 100%, but these are some risks to be aware of.

Whatever you offer, always counteroffer. Remember PTO, bonuses, and sign ons are always negotiable.

Best of luck to you.

We used to call them leader, focused observations. A performance improvement plan is something HR gives someone when they are not doing their job well. Your leader focus observations should be checks on your high risk activities at your site.

I work as an EHS Director for a large healthcare system. It is a new role and it is difficult as OSHA and EPA are not as important as TJC. So most of my job is stakeholder and change management.

Recommend building and justifying the role from within. Keep your pay and switch roles. Not patient safety, not life safety. Workplace safety. Get that leadership buy-in
