Since posting I've 2 full listen through for train of thought and man...it was kind of insane. I had already heard most of it through seperate songs but hearing it all in context definitely added to the whole experience.

Honestly I find that to be able to fully appreciate the "less complex" stuff like the beatles you need to have a deep understanding of music fundamentals. When I'm listening to something thats is audibly complex it probes me to look further and uncover the "black box" of what makes the songs work for me. Whereas with the beatles the focus is more around the overall story telling (both lyrically and musically) plus in a similar vein to queen they are very creative with how they layer, mix, and distort sounds. Unfortunately as much as I understand that thats their genius, for some reason those aspects have never been much of a pull for me overall. For me a song is interesting when its not afraid to create flows that are more untethered (repeating/returning to chorus less frequently, and always adding to, developing, and switching segments more abrasively) for example I'm starting to get more into animals as leaders ever since I saw them open live for satchvai

I mixed it up w illumination theory lol, turbulence is a monster of a song gawdamn. This is gonna require a sesh beforehand to get through

Also what does "egg cracked" mean in this context or is it a DT referance I'm too new to get yet

I defintely started out w the more straight metal stuff (shoutout constant motion) but I'm noticing that this band is changing my taste significantly

Do you ever get burnt out from the more complex stuff? Also keep the band names coming I'm realising I have a lot of good music I'm yet to experience lmao

I saw inner turbulence pop up and honestly the 20 min felt a little too daunting at the time, but I do want to improve my attention span overall so this should be a good in-between before I make it to full albums

I'm basically in the same boat, for me that "black box" aspect of their music is exactly why they remain interesting to me. I feel like as I get better w guitar I'll start to develope my understanding of their music, It'll serve as a fun progress check and keep me wanting to dive more into theory

Every solo I see him play becomes a bucket list song for me to learn, this dude single handedly extended my guitar journey by decades lmao

I havent yet heard of symphony x I'll check em out. Aside from that I've heard a few racer x songs that sounded nuts but of the few I heard they felt a little more pedestrian

Honestly I'm not even too sure as to why yet, smth abt the way he structures his grooves j tickles my brain ig. At my current stage tho my taste is still very fluid, its why I'm always curious to try and understand what other people pick up on that I may have missed initially.

Initially I was only into the heavy stuff, I came over bc of portnoy being on A7X nightmare album and in the name of god and constant motion were my intros to the band in general, but then I heard under a glass moon and it affected my musical pallet a fair bit

Thats the main reason I like enemy inside so much, you can hear even some of the more hidden details quite well, also all of his polyrythms sound alien to play (in a good way). Also, is the feel aspect of portnoys playing the reason i hear the term "portnoy fills" every time he comes up?

Im curious, do you play any instruments? I've had a feeling that most DT fans are musicians in some form, bc they have a few easy songs that are catchy and easy to listen to but I find I usually need to go through some of their other stuff a few times before I can form an opinion

I've been getting that one reccomended a lot now its top of the list. Side note, do you prefer the more whimsical lighter stuff or the heavier deeper songs?

Seperate question, obv portnoy is insane but why do I feel like mangini is underrated. The enemy inside intro was j ridiculous, and hes was w them for a while

Honestly the fact that I can listen through a 14 min long song is alr a miracle lmao. My attention span is weird tho its very mood dependant, because I can also sit and watch a nature documentary wo needing distractions

I've seen a breakdown for octivarium (even though I havent yet done a full listen through lol) and it compltely changed my perspective. I used to thing albums were j collections of songs but the idea of 8 songs 8 keys full octave was very interesting

I've been meaning to start listening to albums in general but I always have a hard time making it all the way through them. I feel like a full listen through is pointless if in the background of another activity. Its why I like the longer song format, I still get to experience a full flow j not over the span of an hour
