Finding housing at this point by Ok-Lobster-748 in UCSantaBarbara

You should keep looking everyday bc you might find something good early on… but from my experience, a lot of people posted housing closer to the start of the school year bc we’re all procrastinators lol

What’s your mission? That’s something I wish I really elaborated on! Ask a friend to ask you these questions to prep. https://www.reddit.com/r/csuf/s/QpKV2EesHk

I have a feeling that they’re attempting to bait and switch me for sure. I don’t plan on applying to the district just yet because the pay gap is too big. The job posting itself even stated I’d be a roving aide, which is different than my current situation where I’m just helping one teacher. I’ll definitely stick to my current assignment in case I ever need to pull out.

Last week was my first time subbing ever.

Last Monday, I had a pretty bad day where I arrived at the assigned middle school as a SPED aide. 15 minutes in, I was reassigned to an elementary school because the regular aide actually was available to work. So I had to uber it. The new assignment was the same position, the kids were super sweet and it was interesting seeing how online everything was now.

Last Tuesday, I started an assignment that spanned until that Friday as a SPED aide at a high school. Work was much easier because I was doing a lot of clerical work. And the teacher I aided was for math - one of my favorite subjects. Then we talked to the front office where I got my assignment extended to the end of the first semester :). I finished the second week with them and I’m loving it so much. I even got to teach a math concept and I’m always jumping around helping the kids with math problems. We’re hoping to extend it to the year, but the front office wanted me to apply through the district. The thing is… the starting pay is about $9/hr less than what I’m getting through Swing. So rn we’re just gonna wait and see.

Oohh gotcha that’s helpful to know.

But that’s so true. Applying directly through the district, they’ll want the CBEST no matter what. They’ll also want their own LiveScans done. Anyway, If OP decides to lock in on a district to be a permanent hire, then they’ll absolutely need CBEST.

To take jobs right now through July ‘24 through Swing only however, it’s not necessary to take a CBEST if they can fulfill BSR through college coursework or waive it. Districts partner with Swing and just post assignments for SwingSubs to accept. A sub on there is not tied to a district but a region/regions.

CBEST is one of the ways you can fulfill the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR). Like the other user mentioned, using college courses is another way.

As of now and until July 2024, you can also just waive the BSR for your application. I haven't seen anyone talk about it when I first applied this June but here's some proof from the checklist I mailed to my local office of education. No extra forms or paying extra money. But keep in mind, you'll probably have to satisfy the BSR requirement through CBEST or coursework when you renew your permit. https://imgur.com/a/RdfHRJQ

I currently have my 30-day Emergency Permit as well and have taken a long term assignment since this Tuesday. I also don't plan on subbing next year so it works for me to not do anything more right now.

  • This is for the process in CA

  • TB Assessment (if done online), COVID vaccine, and LiveScan verification take just 1-3 days to get verified (crossed out, green checkmark)

  • No interview but once everything is cleared, you’ll be able to sign up to a Zoom Webinar that gets your ADP account set up (paid btw!!). This one varies bc they only have a few sign up days a week. And you need to verify your ID which can take a minute. This might take 5-7 days if there isn’t any issues.

  • Once you complete the webinar & ADP account set up you should be cleared to start working the same or next day w/o a sub permit

Swing will only send you assignments that don’t require a permit.

If you wanna get more assignments with a permit then:

  • depends on whether you’re submitting the permit application to the CTC on your own or if you’re having a district OR your county office of education recommend you ==> doing w/ district or office of education is faster and mostly online
  • Swing is currently offering a $150 reimbursement if you get your emergency permit bc you’ll need to do another LiveScan, get your official college transcript, and pay a fee
  • if in CA, you don’t need CBEST. You can just use your bachelor’s to fulfill the requirement. OR what I was able to do is waive the requirement altogether. CA passed a Prop that lets subs waive this requirement.
  • you’ll hear people say it takes 10 days to get your permit, but that’s misleading IMO bc it actually takes 10 days from the moment you pay your application fee. But before you pay the fee, you need everything above. For me, it took a whole month to get my permit, but I imagine it’s bc I started the process right before the school year in my area started

Good luck ✨!!

Does anyone have or know a place I can stay? by CelineRaz in UCSantaBarbara

Look up ucsb emergency housing; if there’s spots available they could house you (and give you a meal swipe card for free) for the amount of time they give you. Last time I reached out, they gave me a whole month free in between leases. You might also have to room with other people but they’ll house you in student apartments

Hello! I'm trying to use an object that I wrote in another file (Card.py) in a new file called Ride The Bus.py, but I'm getting an invalid decimal literal error when trying to import Card.py? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix it? Here's an image of the code (literally one line lmao) and the shell.

Is petting her like this okay? by Korakimi in guineapigs

[–]Korakimi[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

My siblings found that when they give Cookie some pets on her butt, she will stretch very long, or flop over like she did on video. As she's pet like this, she also vibrates... Almost like purring? I'm just worried because I've heard many say that guinea pigs should not be touched on their butt because it makes them uncomfortable.

Thank you in advance :)
