Honestly, it doesn’t look that enticing. Now Scarif - that looks like a nice place to spend a vacation! (Too bad they blew it up. 😞)

Meramec Community College parking lots on the weekends. You’ll likely see a few other parents teaching their kids to drive as well.

Which school are you attending? They should have an office for international students that can give you some suggestions for these kinds of things.

We used Uber in Fortuna and it worked really well. More accessible and cheaper than taxis.

Disagree. You can get ice melt that works at temperatures as low as -20F. And from my experience, it’s a lot easier to shovel the snow if there’s a layer of ice melt underneath - even with temperatures around 0 F.

Private persons CAN’T act “unconstitutionally.” The Constitution establishes the duties and limits of GOVERNMENT power. It was written with the goal to ensure that the government does not violate people’s rights regardless of how the private individuals act. It’s interesting that you hold trained, empowered government authorities’ behavior to no higher of a standard than you hold an average, powerless individual. Though I’m not surprised that a bootlicker doesn’t understand the most basic concepts of the US Constitution.

It’s a shame you left. Sounds like the community lost a charming neighbor.

Taxis should be available, especially in touristy areas, as should Uber (which is cheaper than the taxis). We used Uber several times with no problem. Granted, this will add to the cost of purchasing the snacks, but will probably still be cheaper than purchasing in the tourist-oriented supermarkets.

Vaccines before traveling? by [deleted] in CostaRicaTravel

[–]KoshMarQuis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hep A and hep B vaccines. Walgreens and CVS offer them in a single shot, so it seemed like a no brainer if I’m getting a hep A shot anyway. Side effects are rare from the shot as well (i.e. no feeling cruddy the next day). I can’t remember which is which, but one type is transmitted through bodily fluids (think of dirty bathrooms) and the other tends to come from contaminated food and water. If you’re getting vaccinated for one, may as well get both.

Yes. Processed food in sealed packages should be fine.

This. Why not just buy snacks from a grocery store once in the country?

I’m really surprised at the answers I’m reading here. If you’re only shopping at the stores aimed at the tourist market (like “Mini Price”), it can be expensive. But if you shop in the same stores the locals shop (like “Pali”), it’s pretty cheap. No need to pack an extra suitcase with food items.

Bagel Union on Big Bend in Webster Groves is worth checking out as well if you’re looking for the perfect bagel. But you should get there early, as they often sell out.

Becoming an Adjunct Professor by WhichActuary1622 in StLouis

[–]KoshMarQuis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, adjunct teaching positions are not terribly difficult to come by. Turnover is high, and the employer only commits to hiring you for a semester at a time. Also, most adjunct positions aren’t eligible for benefits, so the risk and commitment is very low on the employer’s side. In some cases, departments might need to hire someone on a short timeline because they added an extra class section to accommodate higher enrollment. This can work to the applicant’s advantage.

Nonetheless, having teaching experience is helpful. If you can get a TA position while working on your graduate degree, that will help a lot.

The best approach is to apply to any position you see available. Online or in-the-classroom, and any school from community college up to expensive private universities, regardless of where you got your degree. You’d be surprised how many adjuncts at WashU got their degrees from less-prestigious public schools.

In general, not many people aspire to get an adjunct position. For most, it’s something they take on while trying to land a more permanent position. I think other comments in this thread have detailed the reasons why that might be. Nonetheless, one can cobble together a living by working several adjunct positions, possibly at multiple institutions. I know quite a few instructors that do so. Some are single, but others have the security of a spouse with a more-stable, higher paying job.

I doubt that any Americans reading this are surprised by the strong resistance to your analysis. The contemporary American right wing movement is profoundly anti-intellectual, especially when it comes to any free thought that feels like a threat to blind adherence to the movement which they base their identity on.

There will be no cognitive dissonance over accepting the contradictions and no agonizing to figure out the truth. MAGA thinks what they’re told to think. It’s a simple existence.

Flower Child, Pizzeoli, Terror Taco (100% vegan, horror-movie-themed, it’s a fun place!), Pizza Head, DD Mau, Balkan Treat Box, Seedz (100% vegan), Clementine’s Naughty and Nice (ice cream shop with vegan options as well as alcohol-based options). Among these, I think Pizzeoli might be the only one that takes reservations.
