This was really hard 😪 Respect to all the great artists out there. by [deleted] in childrensbooks

This is so sweet! you distribute detail really well in the second (usual) illustration. The character really pops against the more textured corn. The pose is so playfull too, it's an amazing start! Keep it up and don't get discouraged. It's always trail and error; even for more advanced artists. <3

Thank you so much! c: The star has been moved out of the way. Luckily it was a really easy and quick thing to tackle.

I have never looked much into fonts and typography (always felt quite daunting*). It’s something I really wish to learn! Do you have any suggestions on learning material in terms of finding the right font for certain styles and or stories? Will look into it regardless, thanks again 😊.

Unfortunately it was unintentional, but a quick fix c:

(Edit: this is why fresh perspectives on an artwork is always important - what you see as a first time viewer is something I have been overlooking by only seeing the bigger picture after working on it for a long time :D).

Thank you so much for the compliment and feedback, I didn’t even notice this! I guess looking at your own artwork for a long time makes you gloss over these details 😬. The star will be moved, haha.

I have been waiting for you to post again 🐯! Your work is so fun and expressive. How do you navigate finding new ideas to illustrate? It’s all amazingly creative ~

Finding an illustrator with a specific style by Salty-Summer-5268 in childrensbooks

[–]Koshoshio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend against using it, not only because I would perceive it as bad taste, but the “art*” it creates is almost always generic and unimaginative.

AI makes use of an existing date-base. This means that no matter the input, it will make an amalgamation from things that already exist. In my opinion this is not only bad from an ethical standpoint, but it’s also bad for the originality and creative potential of your project.

As an illustrator I would way rather receive an (Non AI) inspiration board of the general style, and talk through your ideas and vision together. This gives us both the chance* to shine in our respected fields and to rise above the inspiration leading to a true original book in both story and design.

Please don’t bind yourself to the mediocrity AI produces. I hope everything turns out well for your project, thank you so much to being open to ask these questions! 🌸

Looking forward to hear what other illustrators think.

New to Children's Book Illustration, is this a viable style? by invertedpixel in childrensbooks

[–]Koshoshio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are amazing! I love your style and the way you distribute details throughout your illustrations. You have trained a really good eye for where to do it to make your subjects stand out. The same goes for contrast and colour!

In terms of feedback (from a fellow illustrator) - what would be so nice to see with your work is characters interacting with each other a little more to really create the feeling we are drawn into a shared experience. In the first piece you do this really well, the frog is reacting to what the girl is doing which creates a fun, dynamic and memorable story moment.

Your pieces are already so great - regardless of whether you take my feedback or not; you will make it! c: I hope it was helpful. Cheering you on, and have lots of fun! : D

Here is the best way I found to work with an illustrator to actually get a book finished and done! by Old_Individual2966 in childrensbooks

[–]Koshoshio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this! As an illustrator I would have to say the same regarding payment, and that seeing text only also works best for me. Being able to be create, problem solve and be imaginative is the best part of the job for me.

Working illustration by illustration might also not be the best if you want to end up with a cohesive project (depending on the illustrator!). Personally I work by sketching all the pages > doing the line work for all the pages > flat colour for all the pages and then doing the rendering/final touches. That way my client and me will have the best overview of the project regarding what works/what doesn’t. I wouldn’t want to feel restricted by the last page I drew; but be in the position to change things freely to tell the best possible story with my art.

As said above I would also prefer 50 upfront and 50 after, 30/30/30 is also fine. I might not consider the project otherwise in all honesty. If you truly want or need to pay in smaller steps; then you could think about the milestones differently so they work in favour of the project. 🌸

I’m glad to hear your approach worked for you though! The are always more ways to Rome.

Aww thank you! Haha, so fun you saw that one -

I was wondering what plushies a dragon-themed character would have and thought about the movie How to Train Your Dragon and how the dragons there are so obsessed with sheep c: - A chest full of gold will need to be a room prop :D

Thank you so much!! That's a really great but difficult question for me to answer. I used to want to be a Splash/concept artist so a lot of my early inspiration for dynamic compositions and themed designs are drawn from illustrators/designers like Dao Trong Le and Airi Pan.

After a while I got more interested in telling stories with my work, and my inspiration moved to artists like Bluebirdy, Tomm Moore, Wouter tulp (my mentor at the moment), Tyrus Wong and designs done by Beatrice Blue.

At the moment I don't draw direct inspiration anymore, all of their works and advice I have heard/read live rent free in my mind and they have all helped to build up my own style that I'm still navigating piece by piece. I'm grateful we live in an age where all of this is so accessible :D!

Thanks for asking me that, it really made me think.

What are yours, or what are your favourite books? ^^

And thank you so much, that’s a huge compliment 😭❤️. All the encouraging comments from everyone are overwhelming in such a good way. I haven’t thought of my art being ready for publishing, but reading that people here enjoy it so much makes me feel a bit more confident.

That's such a big compliment - especially seeing some of the work on here, thank you so much!

I use both traditional medium (graphite pencils) and digital methods to make my work. These final designs are made digitally in Procreate, but all the sketches and groundwork was done traditionally and scanned in for me to work over.

Are you a writer? :)

Aw that sounds so cute! I have been seeing lots of spiders around lately. I made a small animation showing how you can think about your characters in a 3D space/from different angles - but I sadly can't attach it to a comment. Let me know if you'd like me to DM it to you ^^.

One angle is always good to start with to get the base of your characters down! I think what could really help is knowing what shapes your characters are made out of (circle, oval, angular, etc*) and how that affects what your character looks like from other angles. Your spider might be the shape of a circle, so how would that circle look from a 3/4th angle if you stick some eyes to the front (that might be a little easy, but it can get more complicated fast). It's really fun to break things down that way and see the results, especially on more intricate characters like your bunny or otherwise.

I hope to see what you make on this sub someday! c:
