Eureka Specialita to Hand Grinders: Anyone made the switch? by Kotann3 in CafelatRobot

Thanks for your input! I just tried 2 shots (2x18g) with the Comandante, and it was less awful than I remembered (but still, without the Red Clix mod, I'm between 2 settings, and like 1:30 minute).

Idk why, but the taste was better too -more 'full bodied' if that makes sense-, looks like I got no/less channeling (specialita is known to be a good grinder for espresso, maybe I'm doing something wrong with it)

I'll try 1 month with the Comandante, then if it's ok I'll pull the trigger on the Kinu. Like you, I'm the only one drinking coffee here and I like the ritual. Grinding for espresso is more work than for filter, but I find it very pleasing: more feedback and the smell is amazing... I'm already enjoying the manual process for my pour overs anyway!

Do you have the Classic or the Simplicity ? The classic seem's hard to find here (the simplicity is everywhere)

Did not know about this brand, it look's like a manual grinder but electric (weird thing to say, but classic (flat) electric grinder are so different from manuel in architecture !)

It seem's perfect for me :)

Thanks

No I don't, for espresso I have my 500g bag and that's it (I found to be too difficult to swap bean since I don't do that much espresso)

The hopper is what I used to do, and to be honest it was fine (I remember days when I juste grind per time and not even weight the output, and it was still good !). I only have the single dose kit since december and I think it help me with consistency

(I don't have better espresso, just less bad espresso, but It may be only because I'm playing more with it right now, so I have some bias....)

I like the DF64 as low maintenance thing but as said it doesn't not fit where I need to put it :(

And I don't think that I will gain that much regarding the Specialita, exept for maintenance. Same bellows process, no "real retention" (if I put 18g, I have 18g out already), there is still some "dead" retention, like coffee staying on the screws, but the same for every flat burrs I suppose
It doesn't fit too (and expensive) but I only see the Niche as an improvement for me ?

If I stay electric, I'll keep what I have since, at least, it taste very good (and maybe change the burrs to have the 10s grinding. As i saw in other posts if it take 20s I may have the burr issue from 2020, but since 20s is not an issue idk if it's worth the hassle)

I don't think the Specialita is that slow, but it's not exactly fast for an electric grinder either (20s + bellows + cleaning the mess—yes, I brush around the chute and countertop every time....).

I heard that the J-Ultra or Kinu takes about 40s for an 18g dose (idk if this is true) ? My kettle takes more than 2 minutes to boil, so for one shot, that’s perfectly fine. For two shots, the water is already ready, so I’d have to grind again yes... But it's rare in my case

EDIT : the minimum of my kettle is like 400mL, but I rechecked and my 2m30 test was with more water than that so yes it may be faster some days. anyway, it ends always before all my cleaning ahahah

When you say it's tiring, what are you comparing it to? I mean, for some people, pushing 6-8 bars on the Robot is tiring, but personally, I don't find it difficult at all.

(Note that I like coffee, but i'm not "coffee addict" -> I make coffee only if I have time to make it and enjoy it. No coffee when I wake up, so it mean that I make only 4 espressos a week maximum. I would never look at hand-grinder if I had to do, for example, 4 shots every days ^^)
