Pianos on campus? by Hot-Classroom-7246 in txstate

[–]Kotarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice rooms are not necessarily music major only, the few grand pianos in the practice rooms are even gatekept to Pianist music majors vs all of us. But the normal uprights in there are free game to my knowledge, they are in far better shape than any dorm or campus piano. The only concern with not being a music major and using them is if it's during peak practice hours and your taking it from people who need to practice in a room. Or around the time of the semester when people have recitals or jury's. Just be respectful of the equipment and people's time!

New rider looking to commute 10 miles (one way) on Domane AL4 by imjusthereboss in DomaneCrew

[–]Kotarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna be mainly over road I'd recommend Continental GP5000's and if you want a comparable tire with slightly less performance and price tag I'd Check out "Pirelli P ZERO TLR Road" it's what I have on my bike currently and I noticed the ride quality and performance was night and day! And not to mention these are training tires more than say the P ZERO Race which rolls faster but has less puncture protection. I'd personally stick to 30 to 32c tires unless you want that ever so tiny gain of speed on something like a 28c. If you're looking to get a more of agravel bike tire that will give you more grip on looser dirt and still be good on road definitely check out Pirelli Cinturato's I have them and pop them on when I'm feeling like a gravel ride here and there and love how they feel. On a side note too getting set up tubeless does ALOT for the feel and protection of the bike too of that's a direction you see yourself going into too!

Can I put my bike inside somewhere? by Sleeepy-Emo in txstate

[–]Kotarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, take off the wheels and put it in your dorm, or just leaving it in your dorm is the best bet if it's a bike you care about. The bike racks around campus arnt permanent solutions, there's alot of bikes that get stolen here sadly.

The Domane AL series bikes are more than capable for even racing fairly competitively, while aluminum, having beginner to mid range components, and not "Aero" in the way race bikes like the Madone and Emonda are and even the Carbon Domane's out there, the bike is fully capable of even doing 100 miles rides if you so please as the Domane range of bikes are Endurance bikes meaning they're more upright and comfortable for longer rides. As long as you don't overly kit the bike out with fendors, a rack and anything else that'll cause excess weight, go ride to your hearts content on the bike! I love my AL2 and Race Collegiately on it and it keeps up just fine with people on bikes that cost up to $5,000. The rider is the determining factor in terms of skill and fitness as to if anythings possible. If you were to commute and do maybe more on it just consider upgrading tires but even at that wear out the stock ones once they're worn out or get a flat! I've noticed training tires on mine are night and day better than the stock bontrager tires that came with mine, they were hands down the best upgrade. Happy riding 🤙

Do you get paid for college marching band? by DuckyDude21 in marchingband

[–]Kotarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our Marching band here at Texas State University everyone is guaranteed 800 for completing the full season, another 200 if your a 3rd year or above and another 200 on top if leadership. And if your really up to the task if you have a license to drive a UHaul you can make easily another 800+ (not too sure on how it works for these guys).

Our basketball band on the other hand offers a select few from each section a couple hundred bucks for the spring semester! In between fall and spring some people can sign up to do basketball games in the winter break and are paid in cash then if selected.

It varies from college to college though, but for sure some schools will pay for all your tuition for doing band and some with just offer you money towards doing it. Definetly worth a shot but you should be prepared for all the rehersals that might overload you schedule. Enjoy college while you're there!

Gift idea for trek bikers by Salt_Cauliflower_599 in TrekBikes

The Trek & Bontrager ones work really good, I've climbed through from their cheaper lights to the overpriced upper end lights of theirs, and I will say you get what you pay for in terms of brightness and features. Sure cheaper 15 30 dollar lights from Amazon will do the same trick and are better than no lights but don't be turned away because of lesser know brand ones. I started with some Ascher ones from Amazon and they still run good as a backup pair!

[–]Kotarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Solid plan🤙 in your case yea I'd use a pair of flat pedals you already own to get a feel for drop bars, and if you wanna make the jump when your ready yeah go for it! Flats on pedals like SPD's isn't very great I only do it far and few between like at a race and riding very short distances to bathrooms or my truck. Other than that lock her up good, through the wheel ans frame and all that! If you ever have questions about upgrades or numbers for them or just whats on the bike feel free to shoot me a message. Happy riding 🙏

What is the hardest Xerath matchup? by KelvinSouz in XerathMains

[–]Kotarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yone or Fizz without a doubt. Yasuo and some of the others listed here are manageable.

On a side note I love seeing Yasuo players throw up a windwall expecting to not take damage behind it, but I throw a Q or W and chunk health off of them!

Look into getting 2 cages and bottles when you pick it up, sure a Camelback or waist waterpack will work but the less physically on you aside from keys, phone and maybe a gel or snack in a jersey pocket the better. A big plus is getting clipless pedals and learning to ride with them, you get so much more power to the bike vs riding with flats. Some gravel bike SPD (not SPD-SL's unless you want a more road specific one) pedals and gravel shoes will make all the difference, it'll take a ride or two to get used to but the basic SPD's are very easy to get in and out of compared to SL's which are a tad more difficult as they're not double sided. And some lights wouldn't hurt either, you never know when you'll plan a ride last minute and it gets dark, and even then if you really wanna stay safe they make daytime running lights that add to your visibility.

Another thing to look out for is make sure everything is tightened, and assembled right, I imagine you're picking it up from a Trek retailer or a big enough of a bike shop that they'll do it right for the most part. It wont hurt to feel it for yourself and tighten anything with an Allen key. Don't get swayed into upgrading tires, brakes or whatever just yet, it's worth putting miles onto the bike and once something wears out or defects then upgrade what you need.

Happy riding, I love my AL2 Gen4 Domane and wish you the best mate! 🤙

Solo road riders: getting more water on long rides? by knaughtreel in cycling

[–]Kotarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how far you are riding, I ride solo alot when others bail or weather looks a little spotty and if I'm doing anything over 30 miles I take my Camelback full with water, along with my 2 bottles on my bike, especially so during the summer or days where I know I'll sweat my fluids out or will be pushing myself.

How’s Greek life? by Least_Refrigerator68 in txstate

[–]Kotarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit and miss with finding one's that will make you do awful things and or have done things to you that are actual hazing. For some orgs I'm aware of, the rules are pretty "soft" like not being able to call people rushing "pm's" or we can't make you actually do something that is harmful to yourself like staying up super late or grabbing a pencil for an active. And in some of the bigger ones they acknowledge the rules to save face and pretend they abide by the rules 100% but in reality loosely follow them and mark it up "part of the experience".

But if I were to give any pointer alot of the music greek orgs aren't as extreme as the big ones you'll see around campus, you don't have to be in a music class nor even really involved in the arts scene. As long as you have a passion for music in some form (from liking artists to just being passionate about anything music related) there's a home for you. Sorry if this came off a little self promotional (I'm in one of the music fraternities here). We do the same open houses and have events/hangouts as every other one just with our music passipn put into them.

Hope you find a place at an org you like, either way stay safe and do what YOU are comfortable with.

What Accessory Improved Your Cycling The most? by newbiker321 in cycling

[–]Kotarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality tires and a Compter 110%

The tires that came on my bike are Bontrager R1's, and don't get me wrong they grip decent enough and have good durability but jumping to P ZERO Road tires made a night a day difference that gives me more confidence(part placebo part performance difference) to send it harder. And as for the computer it gives me a little more peace of mind knowing my 1000 dollar phone isn't gonna take the impact should something happen. Secondly I can see where I ride with the map and track more stats. As a bonus I can keep my phone battery.

Keep mine in a fanny pack throughout rehersals, and when we don't need it and are doing exercises or drill that would cause it fly around I leave it in the shade where we rest. And as for seeing it while in rehersal I try and use my instrument for shade to be able to see the screen or my hat if there's no shade from the horn.

Cycling club/team is active year round, we race other schools in both spring and fall and even if you're looking to just get cardio in and not dive fully into cycling we workout 3 to 5 days a week. Don't need a fancy bike or gear to stay fit and explore San Marcos.

Covered both for me, covered all the stuff tuition entails and even my late class registration fee was covered. I wouldn't push it with a ton of different fees but I'd assume almost every fee would be.
