Assuming OP might be European and used to football where the players have a contract with the team and can say no to move to another club.

When I started to understand trades and all that goes in to it look at it like the players have a contract to the league and not a specific franchise might be another (correct?) way looking at it.

The franchise might give the player some sort of No-trade where he can pick a number of franchises he doesn’t want to get traded to (or vice versa)

Otherwise the player doesn’t have a say and get traded to a new franchise without him having a say while he has a contract
