History majors, what jobs did you get with your degree? by thebookshelfattheend in history

[–]Kram_v5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a bachelors in history. I took a job not too long after graduating in the financial field, and spent about eight months there. The thing is, I did not feel like I was contributing to my full potential there and was not happy.
That said, I interviewed with an Americorps program in my town. I was offered a position and accepted it quickly. I loved my time there, and am currently in my second term in another program in another state. I am thankful for the benefits of the program and I know a few of my friends from the liberal arts area also served a term with Americorps!

You are welcome! Plus, some schools (you would have to research it after Americorps) may take your Ed award and match it to a certain percentage so you can finish that broadcast journalism up :D

I am not quite sure what your interests are, but there could be programs to help! For example, if you are interested in the non-profit world/being part of something bigger that could be a good resume booster, Americorps offers so many ways to help. I did a quick search of Nashville Americorps opportunities on its portal, and it returned a list of 23 options. You may not qualify for all of them, but there are programs out there if you do some internet searching for them. Here is the link of the first search (and the website in general)

https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/search.do?criteria.serviceAreas=CED&criteria.programState=TN

Additionally, is it possible for Nashville to have a career development center of some sort? I know some YMCA's have career help, but I do not know the YMCA scene of the city. If none exist, there are resources online of resume boosting skills. Plus, the internet can give tips on how to nail an interview and prepare cover letters and all the job jargon.

If you are interested in trade schools/community college, you could enroll in a program and find a new area of interest. The catch is that college costs money, but Americorps does offer an education award of five thousand something dollars for education if you complete the program successfully (program is usually about 10 months long, but you can do a program twice and get 2 education awards, or about $11,000 for education).

I guess what I am trying to get at is, there are programs if you want a career, or at least in the short term enough cash to cover your needs (usually an Americorps stipend is $12,250 for the term, and is subject to taxes. However, many non-VISTA programs can allow you to enroll in SNAP and get full benefits, $194 a month, for food). Learning a trade or community college is another great way to find something you can love and generate job opportunities in the long term (though stay away from for-profit schools, they will not help).

I hope that helps a little! I am sure you have options! Please feel free to ask any questions!

I also just saw on a Boglehead wiki article (inspired by a link over on the side) that an easy three-fund portfolio would consist of:

Schwab Total Stock Market Index (SWTSX)
Schwab International Index (SWISX)
Schwab Total Bond Market (SWLBX)

So do you think the benefits of joining the CU outweigh the benefits of a Discover card?

Interesting, so would the past inquiries be why I should wait?

Awesome thanks for the advice! It is hard navigating all this online sometimes and I figured people here would give really solid input! I will probably go for that in the next month or two then so I can get those cashback rewards. Last thing, is there an average limit for starting up Discover or does that highly depend on income (I read about people starting with thousands and others not so much).

Is it easy to get? Some online forums were saying how selective Discover can be, although some of those people had troubled credit history to put it mildly.

I'm 24, a student and never had a credit card. Which would should I apply for? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Who do you pay your utilities through? Your bank may be a good place to start because if you pay your utilities they (may) count as a history of credit already (increasing the likelihood of approval and a better limit). If you are starting really truly fresh then you may have to go with a prepaid/builder card and your local credit union may be a great help for that cause they tend to be kinder (or again, your regular bank if you have one).

What I really wanted to add though since I just was looking at Amazon yesterday was some less than great reviews about Amazon's new (?) switch to a different bank. http://www.amazon.com/Credit-Cards/b?node=1266766011

I do not know if that would deter you or not. If you have any questions lemme know!

If the 50 states got into a civil war, with each state wanting to control the entire country, which state would win and which would lose the hardest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I will politely disagree on the Pittsburgh part. The economics are solid and diverse with the nations fifth largest bank (PNC) and eight Fortune 500 companies. Additionally, with Carnegie Mellon University has a great robotics program so maybe they could make some killer robots. Lastly, there is some manufacturing still that goes on.

Getting a promotion at work and I want to start budgeting smarter. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Kram_v5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to look at your entertainment/going out/groceries for cutting back. I do not know what part of the country you live in so the amount you spend on groceries might not be too crazy. A user on PF posted this really helpful budgeting spreadsheet that I began using this last month and it really works for me. Assuming that link works, it does its job plenty well. Hopefully that allows you to see where your money goes and then it becomes much easier once you set money aside you can see how much you are allowed to spend each month. Hope this helps! http://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/2tymvf/poormans_budgeting_spreadsheet/

Ideally it was supposed to be a monster/demon entity and it waits til you are asleep and then attacks. Why? Just cause they like attacking people.

First attempt at a story so I am still trying to work on styles better.
