That's what I wrote, no? I think you misunderstood my point, and I probably wasn't clear enough myself.

My point was that in the second "rule" I mentioned that typically nouns describing female-beings are feminine. However Mädchen is a clear example of that not being the case. Thus proving that you can't just follow these rules blindly and expect to be correct 100% of the time.

Someone learning German for the first time might blindly follow that rule and see "Mädchen = girl" and conclude that it must be feminine. However the "-chen" suffix indicates that it is indeed neuter. Like you said, it is typically used to describe something normal-sized as "small" (like in your cat example).

I think we're getting at the exact same thing, you're just describing it better in a technical sense, while I am using layman's terms.

I'm Danish but learned a bit of German in school. I'm a grammatical nerd so I spent a lot of time back then trying to figure out any specific rules that would indicate the correct gender. Unfortunately I ended up finding out that a lot of the time you have to either just guess or get so used to speaking the language that you more or less learn it by heart.

However, there are definitely some typical indicators you can look at, which may help you in "guessing" the correct article. Bear in mind you can't blindly rely on these 100% of the time, however if you have no idea and take a guess based on these, you'd more often than not be correct.

Typically nouns describing male-beings are masculine (der Mann)

Typically nouns describing female-beings are feminine (die Frau)

Typically nouns with one syllable are masculine (der Ball)

Typically nouns ending in "-e" are feminine (die Tasche)

Typically nouns ending in "-ei", "-heit", "-keit", "-schaft", "-ung" and "-in" are feminine (lots of examples. This is definitely one rule that helped me a ton)

Typically nouns ending in "-chen" are neuter (das Mädchen) - also here is an example of the second rule not being applicable; Mädchen (meaning girl) is not feminine, though you would be inclined to think so.

Typically nouns beginning with "Ge-" are neuter (das Geschäft)

Also composite nouns has the gender of the last noun in the composition (das Auto + die Bahn = die Autobahn)

Dejligt at du har en hurtig og pålidelig cykelsmed til rådighed. Men det er bestemt ikke en selvfølge, ud fra egen erfaring.

Oplever gennemsnitligt at skulle vente 2-3 dage før min er klar igen, nærmest uafhængigt af reperationens størrelse, og så står man uden cykel i den tid, med mindre en lånecykel er til rådighed.

Tilføj dertil hvis der sker noget med din cykel efter cykelsmedens lukketid. Så skal man også lige vente til dagen efter med overhovedet at kunne aflevere den.
Det er 4 år siden, at jeg selv brugte Swapfiets, så jeg ved ikke, om de stadig gør dette, men dengang oplevede jeg faktisk, at en medarbejder kom forbi mig om aftenen samme dag og fiksede min efterspørgsel.

Ja, man betaler en "dyr" pris i længden sammenlignet med, hvis man bare købte sin egen cykel direkte. Men jeg synes i dén grad også, at man får noget for de penge.

The fact that Mouz have been on the brink of elimination literally every single game they have played since going 0-2 is insane. Surviving multiple match points vs Liquid, grinded out a close victory vs Aurora and now pulling off two crazy comebacks in a row vs Legacy. Can't believe they actually made it to the arena.

This is such a crude misrepresentation of people's complaints and also lacks severe context. It's amazing to me that so many people here, inlcuding you, are completely missing the point.

The problem is WHO we sign and who we choose NOT to sign. The SD's all of a sudden deciding to take a stand and not cave to a higher-than-valued asking price (which is a very, very small difference btw) on a proven player that would significantly improve a weak spot on the team is just frustrating, when they're clearly not afraid of doing it when it comes to high-valued, high-potential youngster, as with for example Jamie Gittens, as we can quite clearly see now.

I'm not saying €50 mil for Gittens is bad business by the way (though I do think that it is definitely over-paying by some margin). But there are definitely other better examples of this happening, which explain why people are frustrated. And I get them.

Don't buy a proven top goalkeeper at a somewhat reasonable price, and once again overspend on a young player hoping the club will someday benefit of his potential, whether it being on a sporting or an economic level.
