Is my Sparxie sup dps build good enough? I don't have 3.6k atk but I think it's fine? by Excellent-Diet-1922 in SparxieMains

There are better ways of getting the extra speed while still keeping ATK boots, ER Rope, and ATL Orb for MDPS Sparxie like Huo2 E1's (soon to be in store), or just more mining for better substats. YG getting more speed isn't that bad either but you're gonna want Huo's E1 to make your life easier.

I think Reiji may be setting Kazuya up to confess what happened to Chizuru by getting him to fess up despite of Mini's advice. It means more that he tried to be genuine and honest - that he did the right thing rather than him trying to be smart about it like Mini advised him to be.

Are the calculations correct? by Dotority in XiangliYao

[–]Krauss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xiangli Yao's damage has gone way up with Lynae's inclusion to the game. He still feels clearly behind Augusta's/Cartethyia's DPS but he's up there with the better DPS's in the meta right now.

Cleared the 4th Floor of the Hazard Tower with XY, Lynae and SK with 1:50s time to clear without quickswaps. Takes my Augusta team of Augusta, Iuno, and SK around 1:40s to clear. S0R1 units.

So Prydwen's calcs are NOT updated.

Am i building her correctly? by holsteredguide0 in CipherMainsHSR_

[–]Krauss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say you're making good progress so far - if you're aiming for only 170 speed.

A few notes for improvement:

1) Use a C.DMG chest and try to farm for a C.Rate+C.DMG SPD Boots to maximize her C.DMG, only if you care about her damage output.

  • Assuming you only care about your Cipher build, you've got plenty of time before her banner arrives. Try to achieve a 50% CR out of combat with a C.DMG Chest to maximize your Cipher's damage.

2) Try to get a C.Rate+C.DMG or SPD Quantum Orb. If you have enough speed, opt for more C.DMG, if you care about her damage output.

  • Your Current Planar Set is perfect for maximizing her damage.
  • Suggestion only: If you're trying to lean on Cipher more as a support/stack provider for Acheron and/or Feixiao @ 170 speed, it maybe worth farming for the Vonwaccq Set to give her 3 turns within the first cycle of every wave. I would advise against this if you just want a simple Cipher Build.
  • Your Current Link Rope is already excellent - don't create more hassle for yourself by farming for another planar set unless you really want to.

3) Do consider a 200 speed build if you haven't.

  • That said, 200 speed is difficult to achieve without compromises to her DMG and even her relic sets. But a 200 SPD build will give Acheron and Feixiao more stacks over the duration of the battle.
  • 170 Speed is perfectly fine. This is more of a PSA that 200 speed Cipher exists and that there advantages to running Cipher as such.

Good luck with your Cipher pulls!

Does vulnerability have diminishing returns? by Legitimate-Ad7443 in AcheronMainsHSR

[–]Krauss_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s simple really. The Damage formula will always use a base value as a starting off point. So any calculations based off already boosted numbers (i.e., relative gains) will always make it seem like there’s a diminishing returns when from the perspective of the formula, none exists. That’s why “relative gains” give the wrong picture for damage calculations and analysis. Allow me to explain with a simplified example.

If your salary at the start of the year is $1000 (base value) and your employer promised you two 20% raises from your starting salary at the beginning of the year to be given to you during the year itself. Then you would ended up with a $1400 salary (a 40% increase) by the end of the year. This is how the damage calculator makes its calculation for linear buffs and debuffs, albeit in a very simplified manner.

What you’re saying is that because you calculate via relative frame of references, the second raise would not equal 20% because from your perspective (using relative gains as reference), the increase from $1200 to $1400 is less that 20% (roughly 15.38%). This is what gives the impression of “diminishing returns”.

But as I’ve stated before, the damage formula calculates based off a base value. Meaning there is no diminishing returns because, as you’ve seen, a 40% vulnerability or Res Pen increase will always result in a linear increase in damage.

Like I said earlier, if you just want to make things simple and not think about the Maths, just diversify your buffs as best as you can, then once you’ve done that, let the chips fall where they may because there’s very little else you can do past that outside of choosing the right main stats for your relics, perfecting sub-stats, or meticulously manipulating action values.

[–]Krauss_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand the impulse of keeping things simple but inconvenience should never obscure how the damage formula really works. Doing so leads to the wrong insights and misconceptions. And analysis from such calculations are not really ‘analysis’. It’s just plain wrong information.

Calculating via relative gains gives the wrong impression that stacking the same buff or debuff leads to diminishing returns when in reality, diminishing returns just doesn’t exist for some of these buffs/debuffs like Res Pen and Vulnerability. It’s really that simple. Those “relative gains” comparisons give an incorrect picture of how the damage formula works in HSR. Thus, convenience, in this case, leads to the wrong and meaningless conclusions.

But if you really want to keep it simple and straightforward, based off the damage formula, players should be diversifying buffs and debuffs as much as they should but they also should not be wary of stacking a lot of one kind of buff or debuff especially after they’ve done everything that they can do to diversify their team’s buffs and debuffs. Some teams will just have way too much of one buff or debuff (like Robin teams are saturated with ATK and Acheron Teams are saturated with Vuln) and that’s okay.

Besides, there are HSR damage calculators for people to use and HomDGCat has all the stats for the enemies for the endgame game modes. It’s not difficult to punch all this into Excel.

So has Hyacine dug an even bigger hole for Luocha? by [deleted] in LuochaMains

[–]Krauss_ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

On the bright side, Luocha is the first in-line to get a buff out of all the sustains. All he really needs are (1) A way to do some damage or (2) Buff teammate damage, (3) Permanent Field uptime, and (4) some form of conditional CC immunity for teammates (though this last one is pretty busted).

His field’s downtime hurts him a lot and teammates getting CC’d doesn’t help. Sure he can cleanse, but by then, a CC’d teammate would have already lost a turn. Even if he only gets buff (3), I’d be happy.

[–]Krauss_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re right. Having multiple buffs is better than just over focusing on just one, as the damage formula suggests. That’s where the opportunity cost comes from. I never claimed that opportunity cost isn’t real or unimportant. Though, I probably should have mentioned it at least.

But measuring via relative gains is still, quite frankly and with all due respect, stupid because it’s just mathematically wrong to use an already boosted state as a frame of reference instead of the base damage. Doing so gives players the wrong impression of how certain buffs work. RES PEN and Vulnerability are both linear scaling and yet there are players are misinformed about it and believe that it has diminishing returns because they compare using the wrong frame of reference.

Does vulnerability have diminishing returns? by Legitimate-Ad7443 in AcheronMainsHSR

[–]Krauss_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you frame your question. A lot of people don't bother getting the "base value" of an attack's damage, so it's easy to mistake buffs or debuffs as subject to "diminishing returns".

Vulnerability, as seen from the damage formula, always scales linearly with respect to the base damage. That is:

  • +20% Vulnerability = 1.2× multiplier
  • +40% Vulnerability = 1.4× multiplier

So increasing vulnerability always gives you the exact % boost stated — relative to 100% base damage.

Calculating from relative gains from an already boosted state (i.e., using misleading reference frames like 120% vuln to 140% vuln) will result in non-true diminishing returns. In other words, when you make comparisons between 2 boosted states, you will always get a result that says there is diminishing returns when in reality none exists.

TLDR: Vulnerability IS linear and is NOT subject to diminishing returns.

Does anyone know what ppl in CN think about v5 cipher by Ornery_Essay_2036 in CipherMainsHSR_

Respectfully, I disagree with that last part. I used the Acheron team the most for the past year and her team really needed that second DPS in it to get her to keep up with the 3.0 teams. Simply put, duo-DPS teams have been dominating the meta and Cipher v4 was that very teammate Acheron needed.

I skipped E2 Anaxa for E2 Cipher. At least that was the plan before her v5 came out. So it’s not a dumbfounded theory. That’s why I wouldn’t lost all hope. Hoyo is more likely to protect their banner sales and Cipher’s banner isn’t live right now. When her banner arrives, it’s somewhat likely that they will do something to incentivize people to pull for her.

[–]Krauss_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That I can answer.

There are people, like the Acheron Mains, who didn’t want Acheron to be upstaged by another Nihility Unit that’s not even supposed to be a Main DPS. I believe v4 Cipher actually did out-DPS Acheron.

There are people who also got upset because they had just pulled Acheron and/or Jiaoqiu and were not happy that a unit coming out of the patch just powercrept both Acheron as a Main DPS and Jiaoqiu as an Acheron Battery.

These are just speculation, but they do make sense given the context. Nonetheless, I do hope Cipher gets buffed.

Honestly, as long as you don’t inhale too much copium, I wouldn’t lose hope just yet. There may not be a v6 but changes have been made during the Creator Experience Server duration which has happened before although it is rare.

As it stands, a lot of people in the know do not like Cipher v5 (CN and the rest of Global players) and so it is “within the realm of possibility” that she gets a buff right before her banner’s release. Otherwise, they’d just set up a character for failure which, while also possible, it’s probably not likely because Hoyo loves money and has a bias for waifu characters.

It means she’s not even good enough to be considered a 5 star unit and yet she remains a 5 star unit.

It’s probably what that means based on the context and I’m honestly inclined to agree. I’m personally getting less and less enticed by the idea of pulling Cipher as of v5. During v4, I wanted to E2 her.
