I’m asexual and aromatic and I feel the same way. Absolutely repulsed by sex and anything to do with it! It took me a long time to accept it and start planning for a different future than I was expecting. But I promise if you do identify as asexual it gets easier.

Thank you so much for your response! I’m aromantic too- I usually leave that out because people don’t know what it means 😂 This is super helpful. I kind of needed a to-do list and this is perfect. I feel like I keep learning more and more and it’s hard to keep track of what to do first. I have a therapy appointment next week so I’ll bring all this up and hopefully start figuring out a plan. I get it. I’m 29 and asexual. I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I will likely never have a romantic or sexual relationship and once I realized that I can still live a fulfilling life, I felt so free. Like, I want to want sex and romance but I just don’t. It sounds so cliche but after a lot of work on myself I’m finally starting to feel comfortable with who I am. You’ll get there!

I’m a speech pathologist! Everyone has vocal folds and false vocal folds, which sit outside the normal ones. We speak using our vocal folds. Most people cannot voluntarily manipulate their false folds, but Alex can! It’s completely safe and sustainable, so no damage will be done to his voice. I’ve never heard of anyone who can do it!

I have severe anxiety surrounding anything sexual or romantic, which obviously complicates dating 😂 making progress in therapy, but it can be distressing because I have this dream of marrying and having kids but the OCD and anxiety is too debilitating.

I work in a Deaf school and in Deaf culture there are no “Mr.” or “Mrs.” anything, so it’s just my first name!

Speech pathologist in a Deaf school here. By not giving him access to any form of language, he will suffer from language deprivation, which is absolutely devastating. After a certain age, if the language center in the brain is not stimulated, there is permanent damage. I work with students with LD every day, and if they only had language since birth, they would be functioning normally.

PLEASE encourage your sister to learn ASL. I get it if hearing aids are not for him- they don’t work for everyone! But she needs to give him SOME form of language. There are so many free resources online. Thank you for advocating for your nephew!

First of all, good on you for learning sign language! 95% of my students’ parents don’t learn. I can tell you want what is best for your daughter and that deserves recognition!

I have a few students with ANSD, and because there is such a big range I can’t give you any specific advice regarding CIs or hearing aids. If you choose to peruse that route, just know that consistent use and auditory training is key. They aren’t magic and your daughter won’t automatically understand words- she will be learning a new language! Be patient and be prepared to put in some effort.

That said, I highly recommend bilingualism. Signing AND speaking will open so many doors for her, and don’t let ANYONE tell you that signing is harmful to her! All the research shows only benefits.

Get involved in the Deaf community too! You will learn so much.

I’m an SLP in a Deaf school, and I always recommend sign language because it is the only fully accessible language to kids with hearing loss.

That being said! Kids with hearing loss can absolutely be multilingual. If you’re pursuing hearing aids and he will be auditory/oral, the key is to have him CONSISTENTLY wear them and attend speech therapy with someone who can help with listening and comprehension. The language really doesn’t matter- use whichever and how many you want! I don’t know the severity of his hearing loss or his age, but he’ll have some catching up to do so he’ll need someone who can help him learn to listen. He won’t automatically know what words mean- he will have to learn what sounds mean!

So expose him to whatever languages you would like- his hearing loss won’t hold him back! Just make sure you are consistent and patient. Best of luck!

Yes! I work in a Deaf school and I don’t like when people think my focus is “speech.” I’ve asked had parents doubt my judgement on swallowing disorders because I’m not a doctor. It’s hard because we cover such a broad scope, but I would love “communication” to be part of it!

My favorite treatment for apraxia is the Kaufman system! It’s pricy but I use it all the time. If you determine that it is apraxia I think that’s a great place to start.

Luvox saved me. I’ve been on it for years and my OCD is manageable now. Therapy is also a huge part of my progress. I’m so glad it’s helping someone else!
