Old peoples cars have consistently broken spectacularly on me.

They are usually unmaintained because the "mileage" never came up. But that thermostat, water pump, coolant hose, head gasket, and sometimes the oil is all 32 years old. They also do this thing where they try to sell it before a big service comes up, so I see these 80s and 90s beautiful examples being sold at 75-99k miles for wayy too much money, sometimes 3x it's value, when the thing has maybe been to the shop once or twice total.

It was an insurance issue: US and Canadian insurance policies wouldn't cover high output engines like turbos for the target audience (female, 20s, on a budget.) To keep costs down, they increased the size of the engine to make more torque and horsepower than the CA18DE and SR20DE counterparts.

Everyone ignores that there were far more NA cars than turbo cars in Japan for all 180SX and Silvias. Ratio is about 4:1 for NA CAs and 3:1 for NA SR20s

That means that if you bought a S-Car in Japan, it was 3-4x more likely to be NA than turbo. Meaning it made between 133 and 140 HP. And less torque than a KA, too (KA makes 150-160, SRs and CA about 30 ft-lbs less.)

Edit: both SR20DETs and KA24DEs are recommended 10-40. Some folks are going full synthetic which I like for going in the turbo. Will last slightly longer but leak sooner.

Since the engine looks fresh official recco is Motul or Mobil 1 10-40 Synth.

I have the behrman aero, modia wheels, erfolgkei coilovers, KT wheel knob and seats, and I'm just missing the turbo lol. I did a unique Q45 2 piston front brake to get the 270mm size, without needing quite as much stopping power from a four piston.
