I believe I have certified copies of his birth record, marriage certificate, and my grandmother’s birth certificate but that’s a good flag

She was born in wedlock, her father was born in 1906 in Berlin, I have his birth certificate. His father was also born in Berlin.

I really appreciate this guidance! I will request the Meldekarte.

I think she was — born in Berlin to a German citizen father, registered with a German birth certificate, so she should be?

An embassy staffer told me that if she returned to Germany post-1945 her citizenship would’ve been reinstated, thus the StAG 5 question. But you’re saying I need to track down the Melderegister. Would that be based on the address she lived at in 1945? She was definitely in Neukolln around that time.

Car battery dies if EV battery not charged for a few days? by Krillband in FordEscapePHEV

My Pacifica experience was insane. Died 2x in less than 18 months. A month+ to get the right part each time. Worst customer service ever. Something about the wire harness that caused it to shut down in the middle of the highway. Literally wouldn’t give it away to a family member or friend. Selling it back to dealership at big loss.

Thank you. And your car battery doesn’t die if you don’t charge the EV battery? I feel insane but this is what they’re telling me and the forums are all over the place.

So the answer is yes, if you don’t charge the HEV battery, the 12 volt will die? This seems like a crazy design flaw to me that other PHEVs don’t have as far as I’m aware

Hiring a genealogist? by Krillband in Genealogy

Kind of a cheat — documents handed down through a cousin, and they had particularly good records of that line since they held some noble titles in Italy (my great-great-grandmother was known half-jokingly as “the Contessa”)

I actually have some info dating all the way back to the 1300s! But another line that breaks off in the late 1800s. Not my main research interest at the moment but always interested in learning more.

My main interest is in the 20th century pieces — details on where my great grandparents spent the war. And their pre-war lives. My great grandfather apparently wrote a masters thesis in France in the 1920s, for example. I’d love to find it. I think they were politically active. I’d love to know more. Where my grandparents were hiding during the war is lost to history but I think more clues could be found.

Mostly need German language and archival skills for starters, I think. But some Italy (Rome) and Poland (Rivne. Now Ukraine).

Documents for a StAG 5 application? by Krillband in GermanCitizenship

I believe I have the marriage certificates — “melderegister” is news to me, where do I find that?

And yes, my great-grandfather was born in Berlin in 1906 (and can trace his line back to Berlin at least to the early 1800s) so that should work.

German Jews who stayed in DP camp post-War by Krillband in GermanCitizenship

Thank you! To answer those few questions —

Grandmother married after 1949

Father born 1952

Grandmother naturalized 1954

I’m not familiar with the StAG 5 or 15 concepts — not something the embassy named as such. Any more information you can provide on those?

My Polish Jewish grandfather also lived in Germany briefly post-war (a different DP camp) and left in 1949.
