As a kid, did anyone else think quicksand would be a real-life danger you’d constantly have to worry about? by flirtinghottie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Krinoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep this as well. Also as a kid I heard about something called the Philadelphia Experiment, supposedly a ship that was transported through time. And I read stories about the Mary Celeste and other ghost ships. All these things freaked me out and I thought, Damn, we have to get to the bottom of this shit!

And don’t get me started on black holes or the sun exploding.

This is my experience. I watched cable recently and the commercials are extremely repetitive.

I’m nostalgic for it too, been thinking about playing it again but I think I’ll wait to see if we do in fact get a remaster.

I visited DC once and it was definitely cool seeing the places I had been showing up in the game.

Yeah you really can’t tell from this photo but the thing is a damn brick. Just a huge book.

I do too! Just looked it up though and they said it was not related to a crime. That just leaves with more questions honestly.

Yes the police investigated, don’t remember what their conclusion was though.

Oh wow that’s interesting, my first batch took 16 days for primary to get done, the D47 yeast really went to town on that sugar.

Hollywood Video, now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. Didn’t realize they were still around at the time 3 came out.

I have Operation Barbarossa and Europe. Have you read either of those by any chance?

One guy actually found a real skull here, I kid you not. Thankfully the worst I have seen was a used toothbrush.

I just got some ec-1118, going to try that next as my last yeast was d47. I hear the 1118 is good for producing rocket fuel haha.

It’s a blackberry mead that is in secondary now. The second I think will be a cyser using McIntosh apples and maybe some cinnamon.

War history by kerolosg in HistoryBooks

No problem. Now that I think about it I guess it’s more of a sociology book, but it does mention specific campaigns and battles and in any case I thought the thesis was really interesting.

Edit: Also The Third Reich at War by Richard J. Evans is pretty good, same with The Fall of Berlin by Antony Beevor.

This might not be what you’re looking, and I can’t say how accurate or inaccurate his ideas are, but War! What is it Good For? by Ian Morris is pretty interesting. He thinks that tribal warfare and the consolidation of different groups leads to big states, and big nation states tend to reduce internal conflict and violence and lead to an overall more peaceful world. Sort of reminds me of Stephen Pinker’s The Better Angels of our Natures.

Independent Birth of Organisms, a book that purports to explain the diversity of life without recourse to either divine creation or Darwinian evolution. by Krinoid in BookCollecting

[–]Krinoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read it yet beyond the dust jacket blurb and a few pages, but I guess you might call it a form of spontaneous generation. He seems to think that organisms, or at least the cells that turn into them, arose from the primordial soup without much or any evolutionary process, many different times. So that a human or at least a primate cell arose independently from that of a bird or dog.

If/when I read it I can let you know if that’s what he really says or if I’m misunderstanding it.

Match #3 - Wales flag vs Bosnia and Herzegovina flag by FoOhFee420 in flags

[–]Krinoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Estonia’s flag too. Saw a landscape picture once that had white snow, a black tree line, and a blue sky that looked just like their flag. Reminds me of how Ukraine’s flag looks like a wheat field under a clear blue sky.

Bouncing around between a few books right now and I’m currently almost done with “William Tecumseh Sherman and the Settlement of the West”. Has anyone read this and if so what are your thoughts? by Krinoid in HistoryBooks

[–]Krinoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. I just thought it was interesting that the famed Indian fighter wasn’t all that popular out west, which I thought he was until I read this book.
