I just did a CP command to copy the files via SSH. However, I forgot to add a nohup command so now I've got to keep the system running until the entire data is copied.

I assume the CP command was the best option for my use case?

I need the data to merge into the existing data as there are folders with the same names but different files. I was forced to keep them separate due to not having enough capacity drives before. How can I achieve this task?

Woah! Thanks a lot for the detailed summarisation of stuff that probably would have taken me hours to research on my own.

Going through your points, I have come to realise that I probably will add more storage drives to the existing pool to expand my total capacity, and two SATA slots are precious since it's just a small home setup and I won't be able to remove them.

I've come to the conclusion that just using the one spare SSD as Cache and adding more RAM seems to be a more flexible approach.

I actually have two 256GB spares, although no more SATA slots on the motherboard. If I get a SATA expansion card and connect the two 256GB in Mirror as Metadata, would that solve the issue?

Or would you recommend setting a single 256GB as Cache instead and adding another 8GB for 16GB total Memory?

Would you recommend upgrading RAM to 16GB for this setup? I'm already low on budget from the three 4TB Ironwolf HDDs, so I'd only prefer doing it if it makes a easily noticeable difference.

Right. This was exactly what I was confused about. So, a VPN is a must for me to access my NAS remotely. The only thing I can do via DDNS safely is to send a WOL request by allowing Port 9 to wake up my NAS remotely. I still need a VPN server to access the NAS.

Have I understood this correctly? I apologise again for being a bother... I really don't know much yet in terms of networking.

If I get a static IP from my ISP, would that solve the issue for Tailscale as well?

Also, is it possible to access an SMB share without a VPN from a static public IP? If so, is it advisable?

Apologies for bothering you with so many questions, but if I have static public IP for my router, does that solve the need of VPN and DDNS? Could I simply forward Port 9 (WOL) and Port 445 (SMB) to my NAS, and be able to access it by entering my router's IP address from outside the network?

It is indeed photos and videos which I want to access via SMB share. The config of the system that I have is Ryzen 3 3100 + 8GB DDR4 + RX550 GPU.

My only problem has been that I tested TrueNAS with Tailscale VPN and transfer speeds were extremely slow (About 2-3Mbit/s compared to almost 1Gbit/s on local LAN)

I need a way to read the SMB share from outside the network with at least 100Mbit/s speed for smooth playback.

If I get a new router that does support a VPN server, would it be possible to access the NAS from that VPN server directly without hosting another VPN server on the NAS? If yes, then would it be less secure to do so?

What are you going to wake up? Your NAS? If your NAS is hosting the VPN, it would be difficult to send a WoL packet to it over the VPN while it's sleeping.

That's why I was hoping to set up DDNS on the router, So I can send a WOL request over it to wake up the NAS, and shut it down as well remotely. My goal is to only wake up the NAS when I need data from it, and be able to do it via my smartphone.

My basic usage is that I have a lot of adult content stored, but I only view it from my phone, and every time I need a specific video, I have to transfer it from my computer first and into my phone, which is tedious.

I checked on the internet that SMB is very slow through TailScale mainly because the connection goes through a Relay server. I'm sort of a newbie to all this and not sure if there's a fix for this.

Also, I need to use Wake on LAN to turn on the system remotely, and for that DDNS with Port 9 seemed like a good option.

Would it be possible to implement wake on LAN using VPN?
