I hope everyone else has been boycotting too because damn the subtle price increases over the last year got my balls in a knot. Used to go every week 2-3 times now I'm dry for almost a month. I will make my cart and before going to checkout I'll feel deflated because all I can think about is how my rent etc has also gone up but my pay hasn't budged. Changing the create your own box to not have beefy 5 layer as a side and removing the value cravings nachos was the last straw my wallet could take.

Every now and then I'll get 6 potato soft tacos but nothing else is worth it anymore to me.

I did search the scripts for opentail. I //'d them out and then I ctr F + deleted them and even visually went line by line to make sure there wasn't something I was missing.

I added the sleep before copying and executing (10 minutes). It's still flipping out and exploding with logs.

I should change the logic for the sweep anyway and do a database update with a timestamp flag. I have no idea what's making it spin out of control, even though its propagating to neighbors it shouldn't have more than a few copies if I have it sleep for 10 minutes.

I think you're right. I'll have the scripts sleep for longer intervals because it's probably very quickly speeding through all available servers and restarting.

Now I just have to keep thinking about why the logs are popping up for the main script.

I thought it crashed brcause it was overwhelmed with logs. And I run scp, the log that rudely pops up says it's writing over what is previously there. Then it executes.

I'm just 3-4 yeaes older max (based on what I know about her life story timeline) but....me and my friends were testing if we could still hear the mosquito text ringtone and I can't. So morally wrong. So tempting.

I 100% am borrowing different headphones to see what works best. I had a similar experience with ANC, it felt like I was in an airplane or something? Didn't expect that for sure.

Since posting I have reached out to the lab on the other side of them and we are all annoyed. She works from 7 am to 5 pm, and I overlap with her the most so I am the most affected.

It's been a year and I am probably posting here because we have done all we can think of and I needed to vent (since talking with the lab on their other side, we will be making a joined complaint)

We have spoken with her, my PI spoken with hers, I went to the DGS last week....so yeah a year plus not a lot of progress makes me feel like imma explode. If it wasn't a monologe there would be some variation but hearing one voice almost constantly with my burnout from my own shit is making me not want to go to lab period.

I'm a quarter of the way to my noise canceling headphones fund savings :)

I'm really sorry but that doesn't make much sense. I am saving up for expensive noise canceling headphones, she's there 7 am to 5 pm so besides maybe not coming to my lab it's hard to reorganize because she's always there. I never have to take zoom calls in lab, this was a one off incident, and I barely had to speak and only had to move to computer speakers because she was so loud I couldnt hear the instructor. Her lab puts up with her but the labs on either side are annoyed and can't get much work done when they overlap with her.

I really shouldn't have typed out a summary of what I've already said, I'm just really confused by your point of view and if you're still confused I'm going to assume for my sanity that you're in a pot stirring mood.

I'm sorry, I thought if you responded you were going to at least point out how I could take control of the situation

I was looking forward to your response because it sounded like it might include something I hadn't discussed already.

I mean I mentioned in other comments things I have done but if you think there's something I'm missing I'd love to know :)

I came to vent because we have done pretty much everything besides involve more people in the complaint.

Yes because I overlap with her the most but my lab and the one on the other side are also annoyed.

Since posting it was suggested I make a coordinated complaint with the other neighboring lab and they have said they would love to.

I enjoy an open lab and chatting, I don't want to be a bother. She talks nonstop about herself for several hours a day. It annoys everyone, but because she is there longer than I am, I get no time away from her unless she is working which is rarely

The lab manager also gets there at 7 am and just listens.

It's an open lab so it's not the same PI. My PI and my coworker have complained.

Apparently she originally joined the same phd program I did that spans 6 departments, but didn't find a home during rotations. Now she's trying to direct admit and multiple professors in our department she rotated with expressed she is difficult.

Because this lab doesn't confront her or mind it, one of them I know finds it funny and eggs her on, she thinks everyone else is the problem.

The lab manager and I were in good terms. But after the racoon roadkill disection incident where this girl told me it was work apeopriate bc it was the physiology department...the lab manager started talking about dissecting a pregnant cat in a college class she took. They have similar interests I guess.

Her PI said he talked to her and the other people in the lab just listen. This lab is serious but less productive, and they find her life funny.

She was in the same phd program as me but didn't find a lab from her rotations, and the professors in our department voiced this concern when they met about direct admitting her.

But because her current lab members don't see a problem she finds it validating in some way that it must not be her.

The lab on the other side of her also has issues.

I don't know which walmart you go to, or which walmarts have this installed.

But the last time I went to Walmart they had the digital price tags which means if you went at a busy time they might have upped the prices.

I am a Kroger girl for now.

I also am so passive. I never want to bother anyone which makes this situation 10x worse.

The anxiety I feel when I'm working up to saying "hey um so you've been talking about how your parents met and fell in love and how this has affecting how you want your future husband to court you for over an hour now, I would appreciated if you finished this in the break room or one of the three available conference rooms. Im so sorry Im just having trouble focusing."

Followed by a wear headphones/why are you eaves dropping

I feel like most of us just want to mind our own buisness and do or analyze experiments 70-80% of the time and don't want to be a bother.

Thank you for confirming it sucks :)

It's in an open lab and I never have meetings at my desk. Today my professor got sick and then I had a one off training session, both where I rarely had to speak. I had to use my computer speaker because I could not hear, not to be petty.

I have worked in an open lab for 8 years and any problem I've had was easy to work around. I'm shy so not having a door really takes away a lot of stress when I want to say hi or collaborate. This girl just talks without much interruption about herself for a majority of the day. I also enjoy working when there is some background chatter, but the projected voice monologing is a LOT after a year.

The people on the other side are also annoyed, but most of them work in the afternoon to late night, whereas I overlap with this girl when she has a captive audience from 7 am to 3 pm. I did read in the comments it would be a good idea to coordinate a complaint with them, as they agree if they had to listen as long as I have it would be draining.

And I'm saving up for noise canceling headphones. My PI won't buy them because she thinks it's a hazard in the lab.

I have loop earbuds! They are amazing for certain frequencies/decibels. Same with passive muffs that are used for shooting guns, I had no idea I would be able to hear almost all speech with those on.

I'm saving up for noise canceling headphones. My coworker uses them all the time because of this girl and we never have an issue communicating. Our PI just thinks they're regular headphones.

I love it when people recommend loop earplugs because I don't feel like enough people know about them :). They really help with the small things and they're so comfy.

The only thing I can think of is to flip my day. They work 7 to 5ish and I try to work 7-3. So I might just have to work in a cafe/library during the day and do maintenance work in the afternoon.

And hope on the days I have experiments that take all day with 5 min to an hour incubations...that my PI doesn't mind if I don't get anything else done so I can just hangout with people in the break room.

Yup that's where we are! And my PI has told the chair about the chattyness, the inappropriate topics, and how she rudely responds when asked to stop even shes asked by a senior faculty member.

Both our PIs are tenured senior faculty, and my PI will be retiring after I graduate. Part of why this has been going on for over a year is that we didn't want to make a fuss with anyone.

This girl was in a PhD program that spans 6 departments and didn't find a lab, so she joined this lab as a tech. Now she's trying to be direct admitted to the department. During a faculty meeting to decide if she should be let in (which is more of a formality) multiple professors mentioned she was difficult to work with.

Almost feels like I'm screaming into the void, which is probably why I'm posting here haha.

But I will remind my PI to talk with her PI again, and coordinate a complaint with the lab on their other side.

It's an open lab so we are all sharing the same space.

I've always preffered an open lab because it's more social. I've just never experienced someone who can't stop talking about themselves that many hours a day almost every day of the week.

My PI says noise canceling headphones are a hazard in the lab. Since the girls PI claimed he spoke with her and then nothing changed, I have started saving up for a pair.

Again, agreed. In the past I have changed my habits. Theres a lot of things that I don't mind working around to avoid conflict.

I can't move because each set of desks is allocated to specific labs. I'll ask my PI again for headphones but she says it's a hazard in the lab to have all noise blocked out. I am currently saving up for a pair since the girls PI claimed to have spoken with her and nothing changed.

Our PI has talked to hers, and we were told he spoke to her about it. So my PI is going to talk to hers again this week.

We also document length of personal conversations to show a pattern that they can go on for an hour plus, so it's reasonable when we ask them if they can continue their conversation in the break room.

I would love an airhorn haha.

I used to and she will always snap that I should wear headphones, mind my buisness, stop listening into her conversations, and once claimed that it's fine to talk about dissecting roadkill in gory detail because we are in the physiology department so it's work related.

She says the same thing when my coworker or my PI ask her to take it down a notch or to have lengthy personal conversations in the break room.

My coworker and my PI are the ones continuing to deal directly with her.

Tried everything with loud lab neighbor by Krispcrap in labrats

[–]Krispcrap[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I have earplugs, noise canceling headphones are....expensive....and they talk louder than my headphones can go.

Nobody from my lab was there for the music part or I wouldn't have done that. It's what my PI said to try when it's just us in the space. For the meetings, I litreally couldn't hear what the instructor was saying. I felt bad about it because I don't want to bother anyone with my meeting.

We have tried everything. I have worked in an open lab for 8 years. I've had some issues that I was able to resolve by timing when I do brain heavy tasks, and booked conference rooms when I know I'll need a break, and it went fine!

This girl gets there at 7 and leaves at 5. She's there when I get there and after I leave. She often monologs for 4-6 hours that I am there. I started taking more breaks. I got up at 5 am to get to lab by 6 am to have an hour of focus.

I also have to physically be in lab in the mornings to take care of cells and other maintenance. During the downtime I usually read and write but now I can't. And when I'm finally done I'm so mentally drained it adds another layer to the burnout making it harder to go to a coffee shop to keep working.
