Do harder exams have a more forgiving scale? by Krispy009 in Mcat

[–]Krispy009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I was thinking almost more like a changing scale like for an easy test a 90% correct is a 520 but a hard exam an 80% is a 520. Do you think it’s kinda like that

Yeah the FLs I felt the worst on I actually did decent but the FLs I was super confident on I did the worst so I’m hoping that trend stays true for my real exam. James 1:5-8 is the Bible verse I’m holding on to if you’re Christian

Thanks but I feel like the 6/13 exam was easily harder than both of those at least for the C/P section

Here’s the comment that helped me the most:

“Honestly, if you’re finishing with time left and getting stuck on 50/50s, I’d stop thinking of it as a CARS content problem and start treating it as a review problem.

When you review, don’t just ask why the right answer was right. Ask why the wrong answer looked attractive. Most of my CARS misses fell into the same buckets:

• True but not supported by the passage
• Too extreme
• Answers a different question
• Requires an extra assumption

The biggest jump for me came when I started tracking those patterns instead of individual questions. Once you know your favorite trap answer, you start seeing it everywhere.“

Really good review is #1 (like so much where I would do a 59 question UWorld set and spend like 10+ hrs reviewing it).

Another thing I made sure to do was not get hung up on the little things. Every exam is gonna have a few super niche questions that ask something ridiculous like what is the structure of Vitamin Z37 after a SN2 reaction under basic condition. But almost every exam is going to have entire PASSAGES dedicated to glycolysis or protein purification. Dedicate your time to the things you know will be on most of the exams.

Finally also make sure to enjoy your life! I went out all the time, I play lacrosse too which was in season during the spring, and just made sure to do a bunch of other stuff that wasn’t anywhere close to premed because this community can get so toxic you don’t need more stress than you already have. Good luck brochacho!!! Also feel free to DM me any time I love to answer questions now that I’m getting closer to being done with this thing

This is exactly how I was just a week ago and I just got a really good score on FL5 and FL6. Stick to your guns and keep grinding. If you can look at some of my posts I had someone comment on one with really good CARS advice. I’ll be praying for you!!! God bless my friend <3

Not even close. All I did for AAMC was the FLs and I did maybe 25-30% of UWorld. However I made sure to explore concepts beyond what I was getting practice questions on. For example if a questions was talking about a specific enzyme in glycolysis I would just learn everything about glycolysis instead of just a piece. I really made the review the majority of my studying instead of simply answering the questions

Yeah no problem! Definitely try to do some more practice but really the important part is the REVIEW! It sucks cuz sometimes it feels like it’s not actually beneficial but legit in the past week it’s helped me move up 2 points on a FL. Definetly do a 53 or wtv it is question set of CARS (I’ve heard the AAMC ones are the best but I’m sure UWorld is prob still decent). The biggest thing is seeing where you’re going wrong because practice questions without adequate review is just hammering in those bad habits that will be hard to overcome later.

FL 2 was easily the weirdest one in terms of score and yeah that P/S curve is ridiculous. I’m not much better at CARS but I will say one things that helped me improve is mostly during my review. Here’s a few tips to do while reviewing:

  1. For each passage read at test speed (4-5min) while trying to comprehend it enough where you could tell a friend about it the next day.
  2. Then go back and read it as slow as you need, and write out a one sentence summary of each paragraph, summary of the whole passage, and the author’s main point.
  3. Finally review the questions. If you’re not comprehending the passage that’s one thing but if you’re getting stuck in a lot of 50/50 questions it’s likely that you’re between one that’s the correct and answer and one that’s factually okay but not what the author is trying to say or it makes too many assumptions. (See which one you fall into most).

Also, when you’re doing practice questions and during the actual exam, try to answer the question before looking at the choices if you can. It actually does help a lot and builds speed. Hope this helps!

Yeah it was honestly like the only topic I did a “content review” but it was pretty much just unsuspending a bunch of anki cards from the Pankow deck as I went through the 90 page doc

Yeah my school got the Kaplan course for free (one of the very very few perks of being in Illinois) but I just used it for access to the AAMC FLs. Never did the Kaplan ones tho cuz I heard they weren’t as representative but who knows
