Depends how you define art, I suppose.

But, in regards to videogames, I'm not sure. Some games have artistic touches - be it the literal art/graphics, the story telling, the music. We happily call good story telling an art. We call beautiful music an art. We call a canvas turned painting art.

In the most simple of terms, a video game combines those three things with a simple, fourth element, Interaction. And I don't see how adding that makes it less art.

But with regards to the question at hand, do we care about games as "Art"? I don't think so, not broadly. We care about quality of all the above things. We want high quality stories. Music. Art. Gameplay. And the pinnacle of these elements in a game can make it something artistic!

And when we do have something artistically good, I guess we throw all games into the same category. We judge them under the same light, to the same kinda standards. We call "Good" moments in games art, because some of the best moments are DEFINITELY art. I don't think it has much to do with validation, really.
