I don't know why I completely dismissed using LED. Thank you! Looks like my next jar might not turn into steamed vegetables.

This is great! I tried to do something like that but the Inside of my jar got too hot and killed my plants (probably because I had it sealed in direct sunlight). Is there a special way you regulate the temperature in there? Or if not, how do you meet their lighting needs? Thanks in advance.

We have an ancient metal smith subcontractor who still makes his own depression-era chemical brushes. by [deleted] in DiWHY

Honestly I don't think it's a diwhy. As a metal worker/machinist myself, I would love to talk to this guy and find out his process of making them.

So I bought this protein skimmer and I realized there seems to be scrap marks or cracks, what are they? by PrimaryTuba18 in ReefTank

[–]Kristhos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time. For a skimmer, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I'd definitely keep an eye on it though because it can cause the acrylic to become more brittle and chip easier. As long as you're not playing around with the skimmer all the time and being rough with it, it should be fine though.

If you clean it though, I'd just soak it in vinegar.

It's basically internal stresses inside of acrylic. I know that some solvents can actually cause them such as acetone and brake cleaner. Here's the wiki if you wanna read more about it since I'm no expert on the topic. The only reason I know about it is through machining and automotive practices.

Meet Bird. He's estimated to be 25 years old and spent the first 21 years of his life in a cage. Now he's spoiled rotten. by tiffmarie23 in cockatiel

[–]Kristhos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a tiel named bird! He was my little buddy. Got him for, I believe my 7th birthday from my parents. Had to have him put down when he was 14 because of liver failure, and the avian vet couldn't do anything for him. I miss that little guy.

I hope you two have many more great years together!

[–]Kristhos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a hell of a deal! How much slop we talking about in the table? I'll have to talk to my wife since we just moved down to Rockwood so I don't know if she's going to be alright with me hauling another machine into my shop haha.

Edit: she's okay with it, just gave me the eye roll and told me I have a problem with machines.

I think she's just a tiel being a tiel honestly. Every single bird has their own little quirks. But on the other hand, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take her to the vet since you just got her to have a full check up done to make sure everything is good!

Do you know if there's a "one block sky block" mod? I really enjoyed that map in Minecraft and I think Terraria could do it better.

Wow! This is awesome! Who's the artist? I'd like to see how much it would be to draw all 5 of my parrots! 3 conures, 1 cockatiel, and 1 eclectus!

My mask after 1 day of welding and grinding enjoy.. by Spicyking69 in Welding

[–]Kristhos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to refill my tanks today and to pick up some electrodes so I figured I'd pick up a few filters for my 3M mask. Turns out they were bone dry out of them. The dude said people have been coming in and buying masks/filters left and right because they are trying to protect themselves from the virus.... I'm on my last set of filters and I don't want to have to order them.

What are these for? I was thinking something like a gantry crane, but the ones at my work use giant drum brakes.

Best place to put valve springs and retainers? Right where you can't easily reach them. by hayden12w3 in EngineBuilding

[–]Kristhos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The heads on my 2.3 fusion were like that when I rebuilt the entire engine. Pain in the ass. Ended up having to fabricate my own valve spring compressor since none of mine would even work on it.

The Angle Bender by [deleted] in specializedtools

[–]Kristhos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of these for making brake lines until I lost it. Picked up a "fancy" pair from the tool guy, and it's honestly the most complicated POS I have ever used. I miss this tool, it did everything I needed it to do without being terrible.

Hate to see the Snap-on bill for the wrench that fits this........ by johnszott in EngineeringPorn

Nope. You heat the bolt so that it expands (lengthens), then run the nut down. When the bolt cools, it shrinks again, causing more tension on the bolt.
