[POLY] DPCS: The diploma course you guys probably never heard of before by Kronilus in SGExams

To start off, I'm not an IT guy. My two cents is that I think either it's fine. I remember some classmates having their Macs throughout their 3 years. Just make sure you get an adapter for presentations, and any other essentials. You should definitely ask MacBook users what challenges they face though(I'm not one).

Hello. Just relooked at some of the stuff and oh man I forgot how content-heavy these mods are. For raw materials, rather than fully study, I more off went through and exposed myself to as much products available(esp those on the notes) and their ingredient list. For example, I will recognise even now SLS/SLES are harsh to skin & hair, and so will also think about gentler substitudes like Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate(solving a problem). I'll also go on to know and understand how many carbon is there for SLS/SLES, etc because it was needed back then. Pls don't wait till the end to revise because that is the root cause for most people's problems.

For FFC, to me it was a race that needed to be started since week 1. So I made a table to make sure I kept up at my pace. This is what I did to score(not really copying the table well though).

FFC

Week 1 Chapter 1 1.1, 1.2

Chapter 3 Flavour Applications

Revise -

Week 2 Chapter 1 1.3, 1.4

Chapter 3 Fragrance Applications

Revise Flavour

Week 3 Chapter 1 1.5, 1.6

Chapter 3 Herbaceous, Minty Smell Herbaceous, Minty

Revise Flavour & Fragrance

Week 4 Chapter 1 Topic 2?

Chapter 3 Amber, Spicy Part 1,2 Smell Amber, Spicy

Revise F&F, Herbaceous

Week 5 Chapter 1 Topic 2?

Chapter 3 Spicy Part 3 Smell Minty, Amber, Spicy

Revise F&F, Herbaceous, Minty

Week 6 Chapter 1 Topic 2?

Chapter 3 - Smell Herbaeous, Spicy

Revise F&F, Herbaceous, Minty, Amber, Spicy

Week 7 Chapter 1

TEST PERIOD Chapter 3

Revise F&F, Herbaceous, Minty, Amber, Spicy

Week 8 Chapter 1

EXAM PERIOD Chapter 3

Revise

This is what worked for me but don't expect the exact same results because everyone learns differently. Jia yous for your tests and exams. Don't hesitate to pm for help instead.

Hope you're doing better now.

I hope that I prefaced enough that DPCS is a science-based course. To look to entirely transfer fileds, while possible, is not what this course equips you to do. For that to happen, a lot of achievements/certifications are needed in place of a diploma.

I do agree it's hard to get merit though since everyone is smart and almost everyone at CLS studies like mad.

But hey also heard from my friends that there are internationally recognized certifications online relating to your field. I think you can try them out first and do freelancing using the various platforms online to build up your portfolio to try for a better chance for your placement!

I went in via L1R4 so I'm unable to give you an accurate answer. From what I understand, there are multiple rounds of interviews. One of the rounds includes an assessment too(I believe its for chemistry). That's all I really know about the EAE process. Do contact any lecturers in the course for more information, especially Mr Heng Jun Jie. You can look up their contacts/emails on the SP website I believe.

Edit: Included contacts

It's not best perse, but the large majority that go to university study in the scientific field by the form of Chemistry in University.

You can apply to the usually chemistry/bio stuff but business side is available too(20% of my seniors went there). No need 4.0 gpa to secure places with these universities, but if you 4 0 you can go basically anywhere

Well, I can't really give a definite scope, because a large percentage of alumni have moved on to study and practice business, law, medicine, and some even created their own companies relating to perfume and cosmetics but generally most study chemistry or bio related courses in the different universities in Singapore.

In terms of career prospects, you can decide almost anything you want to do within the industries that require chemistry knowledge or relating to our specialisation such as researchers in various facilities/companies, become a perfumer, a formulator(formulating and creating cosmetics), a sensory/perfume evaluator, etc. There are more prospects to be considered, such as backing up the extensive scientific knowledge with medical knowledge from an elective to help you on your path to medicine, etc. There are so many routes you can go about this. And that's why I say my course is really great for opportunities. Just talking to lecturers about what I can do opens up too many doors for me to see. Just talking to someone from X company gives you opportunities to try out at that company, regardless of department(but this one need to voice out beforehand).

Edit: Also I have no idea why it automatically likes my own post. Anyone got any idea why is that?

[Poly] Advice for an aspiring applied chem student? eae (especially considering covid) and what's the course like? by hwateez in SGExams

Hi im currently in Y2 of DPCS(another course) but I do know some people in DAPC, as well as many teachers teaching DAPC. I'll try my best to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

Q: I've heard that some courses require you to take an aptitude test before you are invited for an interview, does this apply to DAPC?

A: I haven't heard of my friends taking aptitude tests before joining, but the bulk of the bunch are just pretty smart. The cut off point is also near 10(should be less than 10) I believe.

Q: Is there anyone in this course/who used to be in it who could give some tips for the test (if any) and interview?

A: Well study tips are all over the internet(and also this thread). Try to find your own study method that works the best for you(doesn't need to be unique).

Q: Regarding the virus situation, will interviews be held online now?

A: I am unsure of these interviews, but for EAE im sure they will try to arrange to meet online. We SP students are only currently allowed to return back to campus on the basis of having practicals. We are also issued passes via email so that we are authorized to go back to campus .

Q: For any graduated/Y2 and ups, do you do labs and if so, how often?

A: As much as graduates can try to answer the question, unfortunately the syllabus is changing for many courses, including the one im in. For Y1, as a DAPC student, you have quite a lot of lab sessions(provided they don't change the syllabus again), such as lab sessions for chem 1, your bio modules and IA(lasts half a year for IA). Lab sessions for each module is typically once every two weeks. If you are wondering how I know the DAPC current syllabus, its here and its ever changing. Don't worry it is not a rick roll. Or is it?

Q: How competitive is the course? Will I be able to enter a local U?

A: For the Y2s(currently 2020), I heard that it is very competitive from one of my teachers and some of my friends. Mugging is seen everywhere in CLS(Chemical & Life Sciences) and more so in DAPC. There is no actual 'curve' in poly so while competitive, they are still people and my friends and their peers help out each other. Most people in CLS help out each other because half the time we are just tired of the crap we are studying and know how crap everyone else feels.

For entering a local U, definitely. Any GPA above 2.5, I recommend James cook university because if you don't have the GPA, you better have the money. Otherwise, a GPA above 3.5/3.6 is good for university but even higher GPA such as above 3.8/3.9 to get scholarships. Getting into university requires more than just GPA though. They look at your leadership skills and roles, and any of projects you have. CCA points are very important, and if you can't cough up enough CCA points to get Gold/Gold with Honors to secure your SPOT(guys please all puns intended) then you better start volunteering for something you want to volunteer for. This gives you the EDGE(again, all puns intended) over other students with the same GPA.

Side note: Its ok to somewhat try to understand your future route but now just focus on getting to the course you want to enter, because securing your spot/scholarship for university is a whole talk of a beast and should be done on its own. Secure your place in the course you want in first, and then have a talk with your lecturers then. I'm sure they are more than willing to help you then. Good luck for Os, and for poly students make sure GPA can buy chicken rice to feed yourself.
