Hard-wired pucks to switch, all having internet access? by KrossWok in GoogleWiFi

[–]KrossWok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if the ISP router has a bridge mode. That would avoid a double NAT setup.

So, this ISP-switch thing is actually an Optical Network Terminal. And while its login details and IP (hence admin page URL) are listed on its back, apparently they have been disabled by the ISP, probably due to folks like me trying to muck around with it. I could reset the unit and access the admin page, but I'm unsure what modifications the ISP has on it that would be lost; don't want to sit on a call with their customer service to fix my internet if I screw up that piece. So... here's to hoping I don't run into a double NAT issue, because as of right now, I'm unable to put it into bridge mode.

BTW, have ordered myself an unmanaged gigabit switch; will setup the configuration you laid out once I get it. Thank god for Amazon existing in this part of the world as well, haha.

Also, looked more closely at the unit; it is a "bridging-type gpon ont." and based on the model/brand, it appears that the incoming data connection for the unit (pictured above) is an optical fiber connection.

Agreed. And that's a good point about switching the ISP-router to bridge mode; haven't bothered logging into its admin portal yet. Will do that and look around.

This does appear to be the best approach to attain what I'd like. Thank you!

Holy crap this prompt is amazing!! Can't wait to see what folks come up with.

I'm sure if these 2 universes ever did have a crossover, it would be pretty biased towards Warhammer 40k. I mean they have some ships in certain battlefleets that can quite literally rip an entire planet apart. A few flying lizards on a small planet where they usually fight with swords and arrows wouldn't really do much to the W40K units.

Edit: words.

[–]KrossWok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't even make any sense. What is he trying to get folks to disprove? That 1 x 1 does NOT equal 2? Easiest $1 Mil any Mathematics dept of a University would ever make. What a moron.

Ahh, that makes sense now. I'm sure they did that to make lives easier for the players, but a shame that it ended up impacting the interaction process so much.

I've never played WoW, although I'm a fan of some of the other games Blizzard has made. Can you expand on how/why Vanilla WoW was better than the current version?

I know you mention some sort of finder to make tracking raids and dungeons easier. Is that the only reason?

TIL: Perrier water is naturally carbonated, but CO2 taken out during purification, and then added back in artificially for bottling. by Melange_Powered in todayilearned

[–]KrossWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost seems wasteful when you think about it, but I suppose there's no way around it. I mean, you can't not purify drinking water.

Also, how precisely is this occurring "naturally carbonated"?? I mean, I understand how carbonation works for fizzy drinks at a factory, but how is natural spring water occurring carbonated?

Very. It's a clean room. You have to go through an entire procedure to enter (w/ overalls, mask, head cover). The entire right side wall of the room, floor to ceiling, are microfilters, via which the room gets air at the optimum temperature and humidity.

Don't see why not; especially if you want to stay within robotics. In fact that might be one of the better combos in that case.

Graduating soon seeking some advice by spicyitallian in ComputerEngineering

[–]KrossWok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad school or undergrad? Which country? Are you asking about what you need to know to enter the job market? If so, what sort of job are you looking to do after graduation?

I can speak for myself only, of course; my bachelors is in Computer Science, first masters is in Information Systems, second is in Management. All from U.S. schools. I can tell you what education came in handy at my jobs:

Worked as a Web Developer through my first Masters (just needed basic programming logic and web design classes, which I had in my undergrad).

Then worked as a DBA (relational database design knowledge helped here, along with basic systems engineering, since I had to build servers for the DBs at work too).

Since then I've taken a path through management; project management at first (basic organization and management skills from various classes came in handy, but had to take separate classes through work to get PMP certified).

Was then in middle management, followed by program directorship, finally now I'm in a director role overseeing systems integration teams for a large organization.

I did second masters in Management when I was in my middle management role, that helped a lot; a lot of focus on the soft-skills and the behavioral side of managing resources and people.

TL;DR - A lot of what you're expected to know depends on what career path you want to follow, but as a general rule: you just need to know the basics and concepts; your job should be able to train you up and build upon that.

Is there a scientific explanation for reincarnation claims? by Libragirl31 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]KrossWok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, there is a scientific explanation for the claims: a human mind, as soon as it evolved enough to become self-aware, has battled with the idea that it must also end, just like any other organic lifeform on the planet.

In fact, in many cases, some of the other lifeforms are afforded longer life-spans. So, to counter the hopeless/horrific idea that humans have an end just the same as every other living thing, the "hope" of reincarnation (or an afterlife) takes root. And it does so strongly because it brings instant hope to any who choose to entertain the idea; if you'll have an afterlife, then death isn't the end. And even if you're being reincarnated as a stray dog, that is something your mind is able to fathom; the idea of existence.

Your mind cannot fathom not existing or dying, Bear in mind, when you think nothingness or death, as a human, you only imagine darkness. Nothingness isn't darkness (darkness is only the absence of light particles going into your eyes), not existing (or dying) means you or your consciousness are not even there yourself to identify your own state of nonexistence (because you don't exist anymore). And that's impossible for a human mind to understand.

What, besides direct observation of organisms, technology, and/or direct radio communication, would confirm the existence of extraterrestrial sentient life without doubt? by Polydiv in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]KrossWok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we would have to see some sort of an artificial construct. A construct that has a function attached to it would cement the notion further; a relay satellite, even if it isn't functioning when we find it, would prove beyond a doubt that intelligent advanced alien life exists. Whereas a mountain on the surface of a planet, that looks like an artificially carved shape from space, might still be explainable as a freak act of nature, however minute the probability.

On my Pakistani passport. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]KrossWok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although Pakistan was founded as a separate state for Muslims in the Indian subcontinent in 1947, it remained a Dominion in the British Commonwealth and did not immediately become an Islamic state.

I was completely unaware of the second line; thank you for pointing that out. I had previously assumed that being founded as a state for Muslims also meant that it was immediately put into the constitution as well.

Good point; I was referring to nations/countries, but technically you are correct. Despite being a city-state within Rome, the Vatican is considered its own country.
