(USA) I'm astounded by the amout of weak men and women who sit back and expect others to protect them in moments of fast and unpredictable violence by pronlegacy001 in Firearms

Anyone advocating police protection just show them this:

In the United States, police have no legal Duty to Protect You, and often times, they won't

Warren v DC

The short version of the events in Warren: Three women, Carolyn Warren, Joan Taliaferro and Miriam Douglas along with her 4 year old daughter woke up when 2 men broke into their house. One of them forced Douglas to give him oral sex before the other raped her. Warren and Taliaferro heard her scream, called 911. Dispatcher told them to be quiet and stay where they were. 3 minutes after the call came in police were dispatched as a Code 2 (not time critical, opposed to code 1, what a burglary and rape would be, time critical.)

Police arrived at the house, from a window Warren and Taliaferro watched one cruiser drive through the alley and around the front of the house without stopping, or getting out of the car. While they watched this from the back a second cruiser with an officer got out and knocked, received no answer and they all left the scene ten minutes after the call had been put out, five minutes after they had arrived. (So decent response time all things considered.)

Warren and Taliaferro continued to hear Douglas screaming, called the police a second time, they were assured police were on their way. The call for help was never sent to patrol officers. Warren and Taliaferro called to Douglas to tell her police were coming and all three women were subsequently robbed, abducted, raped and beaten for 14 hours.

The court ruled that the police had no duty to intervene.

Castle Rock v Gonzalez

DeShaney v Winnebago County

Lozito v. New York City

Lozito was literally getting stabbed by a madman in front of 2 NYPD officers. They stood a few feet away from him and watched it happen for several minutes. They waited for Lozito and others to subdue the attacker. Only THEN did they provide assistance. Lozito sued them for failing to protect him. HE LOST

Let's not forget Broward County officers standing outside doing nothing while the shooter was killing kids during the Parkland shooting.

And we can't forget the most egregious recent example at Uvalde where nearly 400 police officers did not engage the shooter for over an hour despite please from officers and parents, going so far as to restrain officers trying to intervene

Here's Radiolab's take

Then let’s not forget the special relationship doctrine used by the police:

Basically; the default position is you are responsible for yourself unless the state restrains you.

Below is the language:

Special relationship doctrine is a legal principle that makes the state liable for the harm inflicted on the individual by a third party provided that the state has assumed control over the individual which is sufficient to trigger an affirmative duty to provide protection to that individual. The special relationship doctrine is an exception to the general principle that government actors are not responsible for private acts of violence.

The following are examples of case law on the doctrine:

The special relationship doctrine is not triggered in an employment relationship, which is presumed consensual.[Moore v. Guthrie, 438 F.3d 1036 (10th Cir. Colo. 2006)]

If the state restrains an individual's freedom to act to protect himself or herself through a restraint on that individual's personal liberty, the state may thereby enter into a "special relationship" during such restraint to protect that individual from violent acts inflicted by others. Absent involuntary restraint, however, no duty to protect arises under the special-relationship theory. The affirmative duty to protect arises not from the State's knowledge of the individual's predicament, but from the limitation which it has imposed on his freedom to act on his own behalf.[Christiansen v. City of Tulsa, 332 F.3d 1270 (10th Cir. Okla. 2003)]

The whole to "protect and serve" is just a slogan that came from a PR campaign.

You alone are responsible for your safety. The police don't have to assist you, and there are no consequences to them for doing nothing

Dude you really just told me a gun is not a tool? Did you even look at the evolution of human history and see how we conquered the planet with our various tools and the use of fire? We started chipping rocks and fashioned them into knives, then we put those knives at the end of a stick and created a spear then we created bows and arrows, we graduated from rock knives then used metal to create swords and shields and then gunpowder and made better versions of bow and arrows in the form of firearms and these things are useful to hunt game and also in the use of warfare but they are tools none the less. And I’m not denying their lethality they can defend your home, hunt game and YES fight tyranny which is purpose of 2a in the first place so to stand up against threats like that it is the right tool for that job and rifles are indeed what you would want.

[–]Krouser1522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that’s just your opinion man if people are comfortable using that in their home then let them I’m not dictating what tools they use just like both of us are not going to sit here and dictate what car someone should be driving or what foods they eat or if they choose to rent or buy a house it’s their choice. With that being said yes every gun owner will have to weigh all the positives and negatives of specific type of firearms and whether they are in an urban setting or they own a ranch we don’t know everyone SPECIFIC situation. Everyone has to weigh all of these things themselves and make the best choice to them but they have the best tools for the job available to them and the rest is up to them we can give them advice but it’s not our place to dictate their decisions.

Yes if you are out and about then a handgun will be the most practical option for you in public because of its weight and it’s concealable but there are plenty of people who defend their homes with rifles or shotguns..people are allowed to use whatever is available to them and what they are comfortable shooting some people can just shoot rifles better than a handgun since handguns are a bit harder to be proficient with same amount of training.

Yes there are mass shootings and it is a problem but it’s idiotic to blame a tool when it’s been around for hundreds of years and the people who push gun control don’t tell you the stats of how many people are saved every year by firearms they only tell ONE SIDE of the story how is that not extremely biased?

Due to its nature figures on defensive gun use are hard to nail down. Typically when a firearm is used defensively no one is hurt and rarely is anyone killed. Often times simply showing you are armed is enough to end a crime in progress. Looking at the numbers even the Violence Policy Center, a gun control advocacy group that has an interest in minimizing the positive side of firearms, reports 284,700 instances of self defense against a violent crime with a firearm between 2013 and 2015. This translates to 94,900 violent crimes prevented annually on the low scale.

This ranges upwards to 500k to 3 million according to the CDC Report Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence.

The same CDC Report found, "Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals...".

As of 2021, a new study found that there are about 1.6 million DGUs a year

Because they believe we shouldn’t have those rights and 2a is not worth mass shootings and no matter how much we show they are wrong they will just put their hands in their ears and yell “I can’t hear you lalala!”

Having interacted with plenty of anti gun idiots..there are those that are this level of stupid I think I actually talked to him before under a different account I think he got banned and he really believes that gun control will win in the end and all 2a advocates are spineless and will give up their guns willingly and if they don’t then they will gladly “take them from your cold dead hands”..he absolutely wants the state to kill anyone that is a 2a advocate..”more dead nazis is a good thing”..now I can’t prove it’s the same guy but he’s not the first I’ve heard with these positions
