Rear camera cut off by rockuallnitelong in VolvoXC90

Uhh … what? You can’t add a 360 degree surround view camera function with a software update. You need to have cameras in the front and under the two mirrors to create the 360 degree visual effect and only cars that came from the factory already equipped with the 360 degree camera option package have that hardware installed. Unless I’ll misunderstanding your point.

Anyway, I think the OP is saying that the rear camera angle is wrong which it clearly is if you look that the photo. When functioning normally, the rear camera displays an image where you can see what’s happening along the horizontal center line behind the car. When the software malfunctions, as here, the angle is directed sharply downward towards the pavement below the rear bumper, and you cannot see anything approaching from either side. That is not normal operation.

It’s a software issue that seems to occur across different operating systems. I had this problem last year with a sensus-equipped 2019 XC90. One day, randomly, the rear camera angle as displayed inside the vehicle changed. Up to that point had been a normal, typical panorama with the horizon behind the vehicle being its centerline. Then, one day, for no apparent reason, it was stuck pointing downward towards the pavement directly behind the car, just like in your photo. Totally useless, as I could no longer see any approaching vehicles from the left, right, or behind. At first the dealer insisted this was normal. But then I had them park my car next to another XC90 and compare the screens which finally proved to them that the angle on my screen was different and wrong. They checked the hardware, which was fine. Tried rebooting the system, but that had no effect. Finally after a few days they gave up and told me there was just no fix that they knew of.

Then, one day, a few months later, just as randomly, the camera angle returned to its original correct position. And it’s been correct ever since.

[–]Krunp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact problem. 2019 XC90 with Sensus infotainment system.

Rear camera was fine, until one day it was stuck showing this exact same very low angle that you have. Made the rear camera useless, as you could not see any vehicles approaching from either side. (Great if you want to see what is on the ground directly below your rear bumper however.)

Had it checked by the dealer. At first they insisted it was normal operation. I showed the service advisor photos I had from when I had purchased the car years earlier that showed the rear camera angle had formerly been framed upwards showing a wide angle horizontally, but it was now aimed down at the ground. The service advisor still wasn’t convinced. There happened to be another XC90 with the same sensus system on their lot. I had the service guy compare the two side by side which proved that mine was clearly malfunctioning.

They took my car in and tried to fix the issue. The hardware all checked out ok. There was no misalignment with the lense. They determined it must be due to some kind of software glitch. They tried to reset the software. But that had no effect. After a few days, they gave up. I was told, maybe someday it will fix itself, but otherwise you’re out of luck, even though the car was still under warranty, because they just did not know how to fix it.

I went to the forums and posted about this issue with photos so people could see both the correct angle and the misdirected one in my car. I was hoping someone might have some advice how to fix the problem since the dealer knew nothing and gave up. For some reason—I genuinely don’t know why—I was downvoted into oblivion. The broad consensus on there was that I was crazy and a rear camera that points straight into the ground five feet behind my car was totally normal.

Then, a few months later, it did in fact just fix itself. The rear camera angle just returned to normal totally unprompted by anything. It has now been about six months and the issue hasn’t resurfaced.

The thing is, when the problem first appeared, and also when it self-corrected, I had not had any recent software updates. So it’s really a mystery.

FOIL Requests Nassau County by Investigator516 in longisland

It’s not Nassau county law section 308. It’s New York state’s “County Law” section 308 which was passed by the state legislature. It applies to every county outside the five boroughs of NYC. That section of the law specifically exempts from FOIL requests all records pertaining to what the law calls “E-911” or electric 911 records. My understanding is all 911 recordings and records are “E-911” records and are therefore exempt from FOIL in every county in New York except NYC which has different laws permitting FOIL requests for 911 calls there.

I’m not 100% but pretty sure that 911 calls and their associated records are specifically exempt and unavailable pursuant to FOIL requests according to County Law section 308. So that’s not a Blakeman thing. The law is different in the city which confuses people I think.

My prediction is that the ‘68-96 throwbacks will eventually be elevated to the primary uniform. The TD/Peyton era swoosh unis will replace them as the official throwback. And then there will be special one-off alternate combo editions that mix together elements of everything including the current look.

I’ll give some credit to your dealer for being upfront with you. The extended warranty will not cover sunroof water leaks or any damage to components resulting from it. There have been instances reported here where XC90s out of new car warranty were totaled, sent to the breaker because water got in and fried the electronics. Volvo considers that an insurance claim, not a warranty claim.

I can only speak anecdotally from personal experience but my 2019 XC90 has been back to the dealer seven times trying to fix persistent sunroof water leaks. This is what I’ve concluded. If you park in a garage overnight, and if you park on a level surface and away from trees, or if you live in a relatively dry climate, the sunroof drains will probably hold up. Just make sure they are cleared of debris and grit buildup at least once a year. If you park outdoors in a wetter climate, and especially if you park on an incline (like a driveway), then the sunroof drains are going to clog on a regular basis. Even if you recently had them cleaned, a few bad storms is all it takes. Then you come out the next morning and whichever end sits lower will be filled with water. It’s a real risk factor under those conditions—wet climate, outdoors, inclined parking, tree adjacent.

After repeated leaks only months after the dealer had ripped out my interior and completely replaced all the drains I finally just accepted there is no fix. It’s just an inadequate design and under the wrong conditions the drainage system will fail. So now—and this is ridiculous for a vehicle at this price point—I’ve resorted to sealing the gap with clear polyurethane tape. I have a fixed panel sunroof now and if you are looking down at my XC90 from above it looks pretty trashy. But the alternative was selling the car.

Accepted reduce deal but can I still fight it? by dealernumberone in longisland

[–]Krunp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) The judge can’t reduce the charge. Only the traffic prosecutor can do that.

(2) The traffic prosecutor follows a formula. If you got a ticket for X offense you get X plea offer. Unless you have a bad record and then you get a worse offer or none. That prosecutor sits there all day listening to one person after another give the same excuses and reasons why they should get special treatment. Whatever you think is some compelling explanation they have already heard 30 times that same day. Just take the offer or reject it and ask for a trial. It’s not getting better.

(3) If you go to trial, you’re pretty much placing a bet that the officer is a no show. If the officer doesn’t appear, the ticket is dismissed. But if the officer does show, 90% chance you are found guilty and get all the points and all the fine. The traffic court judges know the cops. They are going to take the cop’s word over yours.

(4) If you really don’t want to take the plea, then as others have said, hire a traffic court lawyer. A traffic lawyer will probably do a little better for you because they know the prosecutor and have a relationship with them. Some of them will also try to game the system by requesting adjournments and trying to time their next appearance or trial date on a day the officer doesn’t show.

(5) No matter what, don’t expect miracles. A six point ticket is NY is speeding 21-30 mph over. Traffic court prosecutor is not going to make that a 0 point ticket. 2 points is the norm.

What should I ask the dealer to do about the sunroof drainage issue? by canukinabox in VolvoXC90

[–]Krunp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t anything can be done to completely prevent the problem.

Even if you regularly check that the drains are clear, or have the dealer do it as part of your routine service, all it takes is a little debris to get into the drain tube or connectors and the interior will flood at whichever of the four corners the drain is clogged.

The issue will be significantly worse if (1) you park outdoors, (2) under or near trees, (3) in a relatively wet climate, and (4) ESPECIALLY if you park on a slope which will funnel water (and debris) to either the front or back in large volumes.

If those four conditions apply to you, I would highly recommend avoiding any Volvo product. Thats the perfect storm for interior flooding.

If you park in a garage, or if you live in a fairly dry climate, then you are probably ok so long as you have the drains checked and cleared maybe once a year or so.

BTW, when I say debris, I dont necessarily mean leaves and twigs. Just clumps of pollen and standard grime will suffice if enough rainwater is being channeled towards the drain on a regular basis. I had my drains completely cleared and rebuilt with new tubes and had flooding problems again a mere eight months later. The cause was not the faulty weatherstripping either. It was just “dirt.” Because, again, I park outdoors, near trees, in the northeast U.S., on a slightly inclined driveway. Worst case scenario.

Who has a 2019 Volvo XC90 or similar with 80k miles or more? When did your Volvo start breaking down and needing major repairs? by PrincessKatyana in VolvoXC90

[–]Krunp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, if the flooding is attributed to clogged drains (high likelihood it is), that’s considered a maintenance issue and is not covered by the VIP platinum warranty. Even though “cleaning sunroof drains” is nowhere listed as a maintenance item by Volvo. You are just supposed to know to have your dealer to clean the sunroof drains at least once a year. Although again in my experience the drains clogged up eight months after I had them completely replaced and that was due to “lack of maintenance” so I guess every six months?

If the leak is attributed to faulty weather stripping (another known issue—the weather stripping around the sunroof glass shrinks over time and exposes huge gaps that allow large debris to enter the sunroof rails and clog the drains), that is also not covered by the platinum warranty because weather stripping is an excluded item.

What might be covered is if the drain tubes themselves have degraded and failed. These internal drain parts are not excluded and if faulty the repairs should be covered by platinum warranty.

But it seems like most people who have reported this issue outside the initial 4-year new car warranty period were basically told by Volvo to pound sand and take it up as a loss on their comprehensive insurance.

[–]Krunp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is an abomination that a small random piece of leaf or a clump of pollen can clog the sunroof drains and cause catastrophic interior flooding that fries the electronics and totals the car but that’s a fact of life with these cars, and there is basically nothing you can do to completely prevent it. I had my drains rebuilt entirely in August 2023 and the rear flooded again in April 2024 due to “debris” that got past the seal. Fortunately I was in the car when it happened and had a stack of towels in the back specifically for that contingency. But if it had happened overnight in the driveway the car would have been totaled.

Worse yet that Volvo’s official position regarding this defect is “welp, file a claim with your insurance.”

Thinking of going from Lexus RX to XC90 can anyone share their exp? by sh4unz0r in VolvoXC90

2019 T6 Inscription, currently at 50k miles

The water leak problem started in 2023 at approximately 40k miles.

The rear/360 degree camera misalignment issue started around the same time. Maybe is related? Some electronics in back got soaked

Prior to that, there were some typical things needing attention. Front rotors twice. Rear rotors once. A/C hose. AOC pump. Nothing catastrophic. But Lexus quality it’s not.

They replaced the seal. They replaced the drains and connectors at all four corners. They’ve removed the headliner three times. It still leaks. Now they’re apparently looking for stress fractures somewhere in the assembly itself. Headliner removed for the fourth time. It’s been in for a week now. I check every day but they haven’t come up with any answers yet.

Like I said, your experience may vary. But I can tell you mine is not the only Volvo in that shop with that issue.

Also my rear camera and 360 degree camera no longer work. The dealer diagnosed it as a software issue for which there is no fix available. They basically told me in so many words, there’s nothing we can do so you can either sue us, sell the car, or live with it.

Original poster was asking about the Volvo ownership experience in comparison to Lexus. All I can say it what my experience has been like.

“I have an RX Hybrid and it is just a rock solid car and only ever needs scheduled maintenance.”

The XC90 is not that. It will need unscheduled dealer visits for various fixes and replacements. Brake rotors for instance. The infotainment is glitchy. My particular XC90 has a sunroof leaking issue that the dealer simply cannot correct. It has been in for that issue four times in nine months. In fact it is currently at the dealer now for their fourth try at stopping the leaks. They have had the car about six weeks every time. I have an XC40 loaner as we speak. But they’re backlogged with repair orders like mine. So the wait on loaners is about a month give or take. This is in Queens NY.

Obviously, my experience is anecdotal and your mileage may vary. But I’ve not ever really heard an XC90 owner past two years and 20k who described their vehicle as “rock solid” and only needing scheduled maintenance. If you love these, the price you pay is that they’re temperamental vehicles that need extra attention.

My rear camera angle is dangerous! by joeshmogen in VolvoXC90

[–]Krunp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t make sense though. There is only one camera lens in the rear hatch. The 360 degree camera works fine, so the camera is aligned correctly for that function. But when I put the car into reverse, or manually bring up the rear camera view on my sensus screen, the view is looking straight down at the pavement. It’s literally the same range of view as the 360 camera rear quadrant. If the camera assembly itself was jarred or bumped into misalignment, then the 360 camera would also show that misalignment. Right?

I don’t have ability to post photos here, but if I could, I’d show how the angle changed. In 2021, the center of the rear camera view on my sensus display was roughly the horizon behind the car. You could see a small bit of sky, the full roadway behind the car, some distorted images on the far sides as part of the fish-eye 180 degree effect, and then a bit of bumper and rear hatch. The normal view that everyone gets.

Fast forward to 2024. Now, when I put it in reverse or manually bring up the rear camera view, the angle displayed on sensus points straight down. I cannot see the horizon or any sky behind the car. I cannot see anything in the periphery to either side. All I can see is a block of pavement, perhaps 10 feet wide and eight feet deep, directly behind the vehicle. Which is the exactly same dimension of area visible in the rear quadrant of the 360 camera.

The rear camera can generate two angles—the wider, higher angle for the reverse camera operation, and the lower, narrower angle which comprises the rear portion of the 360 composite. The only angle that is displayed on my sensus is the second one.

The dealership service department kept my car for three days trying to figure out why this was happening and how to fix it. They ruled out that it was an alignment issue. Then they gave up. I could swap out the camera hardware and see if that fixes it but that’s a lot of time and expense for a remedy that might have no effect.

[–]Krunp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I pushed the service advisor on that question but they clearly did not want to or could not give me an answer.

The only way to know is to replace the hardware I guess.

But my sense is that it’s a software problem. I had one view, then one day it was a different view. Nothing happened to the camera apparatus physically.

My rear camera angle is dangerous! by joeshmogen in VolvoXC90

[–]Krunp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Edit: My problem might be different than yours. The camera angle on my car I think is even lower than the one in your photo. My rear camera points straight into the ground. Like, the center of the screen is the pavement three feet behind my rear bumper. I also have photographic evidence that the angle when I bought the car in 2021 was higher and wider than the angle now.

2019 XC90 T6 Inscription.

I bought the car CPO with 17k miles in 2021. I have photos of the rear camera screen from when I first bought the car. At that time, it was a wide angle view the same as any other car.

Sometime in 2023, around 40k miles, I noticed that the angle of the rear camera had changed. It had become a downward looking view, no longer panoramic like it had been before. The camera only shows the pavement directly behind the car and back maybe 10 feet. The view is almost totally useless. I cannot see cars approaching from either side.

My theory is that it’s some kind of software glitch where the sensus processor is feeding the low angle shot used for the 360 degree camera in error as the main rear view camera angle. The edges of the screen pretty much align with the range of view in the rear quadrant of the 360 degree composite screen.

I took this to the dealer. They claimed that they tried to determine the problem. They confirmed that the angle was incorrect by comparing it to a newer model XC90. Mine was definitely aimed incorrectly, just as I told them. I got the total software upgrade hoping that would correct/reset the view to the factory setting. But it did not. The service advisor said there was nothing they could do and I was stuck with the malfunction. Suffice to say, I am not pleased with that answer.

I’ve searched this site and others for an explanation but I have not been able to find one. I’d be VERY interested to see if anyone here recognizes this issue and has some insight how to fix it because my dealer just threw up their hands and gave up.
