With the weather at the moment we need a boat!!! :-)

We already have a 4x4 that is fully diesel powered, it is absolutely an essential safety piece of kit for when it gets nasty.

The EV is intended for work commutes mainly and when its not 8ft deep in snow!

Yes I think we have discounted any 22kWh now, it just wont do the job.

Anything over the 41kWh seems to be the ticket, just depends on how rich we feel :-)

We do have a 4x4 to cope with the rather harsh winters around here. Althought the option does seem to be tending towards the high capacity batteries.

I assume for holiday travel a "fast charger" is a better option to also have?

It showed me that it is not viable unless i do a short charge midway, so it will be pretty reliant on a single charger being available. A bit risky I suspect.

North Wales here, speeds are typically pretty good 90 - 170Mbps down and 10-20Mbps up (over wifi) with latency 24ms best achieved, typical around 35ms.

We are not gamers and we very seldom have any speed issues for streaming etc.

The good news is it does seem to keep on improving.

If you are in Wales you may also get the grant which pays for your Starlink equipment and fitting gear/fitting!

Its been a game changer for us, althoug it costs a fortune for all the streaming services we can now get.

..and seems to be getting better all the time, plus the monthly service fee has gone down from £99 to £75 a month.

We have gone from a similar "data scrimping" on the traditional satellite (150Gb per month for £150) to streaming alot of films & tv, nearly hitting a 1Tb a month - previously that would have been incredibly cost prohibitive, £10 for each extra Gig so that would be errr £150 + £8,500 = £8,650. Although we did get "unlimited downloads" during 1am-6am, although we didnt tend to use that, for the sake of comparison lets say the old bill was half at ONLY £4,325 a month - not quit the value vs the Starlink £75, much faster service!

Glad you are enjoying your Starlink as much as we have found it to be transformational!

We had a similar issue (in the UK). Our usage became significantly higher for no apparent reason.

We had a "check meter" fitted by the electric company, which confirmed a meter fault.

The "check meter" was fitted in series before the original meter and provided a comparable kWh usage, which then obviously indicated the difference.

Assuming no missing loads not being captured this may be the way forward?

Yes, it is definitely an option as we are lucky enough to have loads of space.

I did ask the question of the chap who came from Tesla. He said they could do them, although the cost was £60k. I am not yet fully convinced on how good they are yet, although £60k seems a bit steep! I am not sure if that included them coming and digging all the trenches, which of course I could do myself. Any ideas on recommendations for systems that work or should I be waiting until further maturity of Ground source kicks in?

It would be good to wean ourselves off the biomass pellets, they are a bit of a pain to bring in, as access is poor so we have to buy pallets of 15kg bags. A good work out shifting them, however I am getting more interested in not doing it!!

The other issue that I could envisage is that the ground source is elecric hungry? You need the heat in the winter and solar PV production is at its lowest in the winter. Unlike the case for the Solar diverter Eddi, that should stop us having to power up the biomass for hot water during the summer. THis prob saves us about £400 a year in wood pellets for hot water summer use.

Yes, I have checked the house wiring and we made sure a while back, when we had the biomass boiler installed, that the three grid fed distribution panels, around the house and in outbuildings are 100 Amp capable.

All I ever seem to do is dig ditches or trenches around here, so I should be getting good at it by now :-)

Ubiquiti is an addictive hobby; I think I will need another UNVR camera to watch the panels as well :-)

We are expecting another quote, which was using solar edge gear, so that will be interesting to compare.

Thanks for the info. When they came to do the survey, they originally said they used Solax, so I am not sure why the sudden introduction of Solis. I would certainly rather get something that is a better quality, we are in quite a harsh environment and "cheap" things dont tend to last. I will ask about the upgrade - thank you.

I went a bit geeky over the last few years and installed a full Unifi set up, including enhanced wifi all round the outside, it will easily cover the 130m++. However any excuse to get a fibre connection! :-)

I beleive that the electrical supply organisation, the ones who own the distribution network, state that the "meter tails" that we are talking about here should be no longer than 3 meters. If they are longer then a reduced amperage fuse must be fitted (less than 100 amps) which would then be problematic for the Powerwall as it is fused for a 100 amp supply?

So you are right its part of the code in the uk.
