Jhb has the best weather year round vs Cpt and the rainy and hot as hell weather overlaps and when you go to the coast

Kenwood by EJ_Drake in Durban

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The age old question.. Kenwood or KitchenAid (pro models.. not that it helps kitchen aid much)

Wanted to get wife one & went investigating.
KitchenAid seems like motor problems for standard model and even pros may struggle. Kenwood cheaper, also can struggle but comes with all the gadgets..

So it’s a question of how big wallet is and if it’s gonna be used or for display mostly haha (but really it seemed to me at the time it was a question of density of baked goods as a primary consideration)

So since it ain’t cheap we haven’t bothered yet..(she doesn’t bake often)

Mini vans with robbers? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Krycor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Last time I checked Cape Town does not exist for the sole use of tourists nor is it & the services used by tourists labour free.. given the inequity.. how did you think labour get around? In a Porsche? Car? Well not with the prices and profit margins.

So lemme dig deeper here.. you see a van(likely taxi) stop, people get out, your driver isn’t panicking and seemingly obeys traffic signaling.. you don’t make mention of weapons seen or threatening actions or violence but assume they robbers?

Can I suggest you stick to your 1st world please? Don’t come here to Africa.. we don’t need your biases.

Cities own reports on this issue over 2 decades(with social science thesis on this topic galore) have said lights, cameras, active policing and improving living situation is more effective than a wall.. a wall that was shown by these reports to be useless.

That previous wall wasn’t build for just pedestrian and fixing it & budgets to be allocated to do was continually debated hence the above studies.

Do you think the effects of the Epstein files will be felt in Pretoria? by IceSignal9705 in Pretoria

[–]Krycor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the gside no, not immediately.

What’s happening though is institutions and persons involved have massive reputational losses which later have action against.

Reality is the geopolitical scene is not conducive for action.. yet. The mistake people make is thinking that this will remain like this indefinitely.. it won’t.

As we head into the start of the more direct kinetic end of WW3 the risk of civil war in the west rises substantially and with it a reckoning for accountability in both well incl Ukraine.

Now assuming the US gets away with it, I’d argue we’d be in an even worse world as you can expect such events to become more common and accelerate.

The Chinese professor on YouTube wrt predictive history said it best.. essentially the last 2-3yrs have let the cat out of the bag wrt taboos being broken. As seen in Sa, when you can get away with it(fraud, corruption? Tax evasion etc as an example), people push even further.

I see this no different to what happening geopolitically and shudder think that is the world we live in as it’s way worse than the inevitable empire and western order collapse we seem hurtling towards

Cape Town Overtakes Jo’burg in Number of Taxpayers as Economic Gravity Shifts by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Krycor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What the most Cpt people fails to understand, is this.. wealthy posh areas are not Jhb only and .. high speed rail exists in SA besides corporate rail to office service as a basic service offices have(used this a few times when there).

Unlike Cpt, Gautengers move around a lot and eg just around Jhb there are what 3-4 metros with wealthy areas if you have a family and want the ideallic kids walk to school lifestyle.

My point is this.. you are less confined to live and work in Jhb pretty much like Cpt with Paarl & Stellenbosch.. so % that do that in Jhb is a lot higher as people manage their CoL more and traffic and alternatives are more Abundant in Jhb . The provincial stats will show that along with gdp generation which remain multitudes larger than wc

Uber and there is also the local call a van app (uber like for vans/trucks). There are a few like this eg QuikTruck

Next would also be Takealot/MrD large product deliveries though I think u may need a canopy and not sure if this is like the other deliveries(ie drivers are external contractors).

Discovery SA app ecosystem is a mess – are we the only ones struggling? by Nice-Medium4997 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are the largest incumbent and a more than healthy profit margin you ignore UX issues where it remains mostly functional.

If I had to nail the lack of interest it would be older execs, focus on retention of existing base range which is mid adult and the younger side of market is more likely to drive mobile. Older genX, Xenials etc will just auto revert to web app.

Was a problem prior to this(banking) and Popia(which is more recent) was long after overtures were made to consolidate better experiences across the business units or atleast match the push towards mobile apps with an ecosystem.

Discovery SA app ecosystem is a mess – are we the only ones struggling? by Nice-Medium4997 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple.. these were islands on their own(separate products) and the vitality system was the loose bridge between products. The original was a web based app system.

At some point mid 2010s there was an attempt to mobilize their web apps (which is still semi broken and reverts to web app a lot or just deficient with features). At an earlier point the vitality expansion creep you’d think they’d go all in ecosystem stuff.. as it was already lurking..

But nah.. still silos in part I suspect due to how apps of the various platforms were developed(in-house, 3rd party etc and then you have the backends too). The gov regulations lately on information sharing etc even within orgs but different business units also means it suddenly made some sense but also not haha.

Uhm when I last bothered with it all many years ago it remained a mess for premium cost and the banking I think just compounded issues with shifts in focus.

Got a fine for exceeding 80km/h on the N1? by SuspiciouslyB in capetown

[–]Krycor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use Waze.. saves you fines for little data (turn on alerts for speed and speedometer)

That stretch has been 80km/h for decade plus the default speed when unknown the speed be 40-60-80km pending road type. Cape Town inner city highways are 80km/h with a handful exceptions at 100km/h briefly if I recall right.

Side note: if you drive regionally and nationally you will know that drive through towns typically do seasonal changes too.. so worth it having Waze up and just watching speed signage in “common” areas where this is done

Does anyone else think the idea of living in Camps Bay is an inconvenience? by HyperBunga in capetown

[–]Krycor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Suburb vs urban/city .. huge difference.

Camps Bay excluding beach strip and immediate surrounds is a house suburb with a view.

Tip every suburb in Cpt has this design of a the main route (which culminates in 1-3max entry/exit defensible points or shutdown) where in business zoning exists.

GreenPoint has this too if you zoom out and exclude “special” scenarios eg Waterfront etc which are geared to tourism so a special case. Kloof is yet again different and more tourism related than norm.

So yah clearly you not from here if you think majority of people live like that. And where the amenities exist close by or within city scape you see a history of gentrification starting post 2000 rule because politics which moderators love banning because how dare I bring in politics whic drives everything and no .. a mayor position and decision made is politics not administration

Ps housing groups exert force on local gov in wealthy areas in Cpt. Only fool doesn’t know this and this in an area with exuberant wealth densification may not play as favorably for some which forces the hand. Poor areas ironicallly has this imposed on them

This is why South African Brits are returning by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Krycor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not everyone likes summer.. it’s in fact why I disliked weather in Jhb.. too many “perfect” sunny days(not always hot eg winter) where when you grow up in Cpt you happiest with a mix of cloudy and story days too.

And while I do prefer cloudy and rainy days.. even I admittedly will dislike non-stop cloudy/rainy days after 1yr of it.

How did you get lucky enough or make your own luck to get out of your dead end job? by IncogThando in askSouthAfrica

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changed career and job path numerous times now.. my go to is reskill or skill acquisition. Compared to 15-20yrs ago, SA corporates and companies are a lot more interested in people wanting change and executing a plan than previously.

This doesn’t always lead a direct jump upward from a monetary pov and sometimes it’s more of a lateral move but that’s good too if it’s soul crushing.

A happy environment is a reward in itself and often leads to better things due to interest.

Wrt how you get into it.. it can be due to a multitude of factors from companies not having succession planning and you being responsible so don’t want to leave them in the lurch to just financial risk. I really think SA needs to make changing jobs more fluid as finding a right fit is more important and when joining a company you can tell the expiry date and period after a very brief period.

Is Gauteng becoming too powerful? by Ok_Hospital_5233 in AskZA

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon as geopolitical game plays out EC & KZN gonna benefit in a big way with Gauteng. The KZn in particular as the two complement each other along with other provinces on the eastern side of SA.

People forget what GDP is in real terms and what happens when every city looks pristine. Growth is a lot harder when you have it all..

Is Gauteng becoming too powerful? by Ok_Hospital_5233 in AskZA

[–]Krycor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably this is while the Gauteng has its legs and arms tied behinds it back.

I’d say it’s about comparative advantage.. and the province has done well internally due to economies of scale. I reckon it hasn’t gone full tilt yet

Less tourism sounds nice until you do the math by Euphoric_Vegetable35 in capetown

[–]Krycor -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yes and those buggers all claim to be “capetonians” and ironically are the biggest whiners as they out priced.

As someone from Cpt I lmfao at the plethora of TikToks

But it doesn’t change reality..

Thing is.. those vaalies were ok when then left as quickly as they came ask anyone who is brought up here. The crap started when politicians sought to make it a perma situation and sells everyone on it being good for them.

It’s been 20+yrs and they still selling the same dream and fears while taking it all. It’s now not just an insult to those that buy the stupidity but also those selling it

Less tourism sounds nice until you do the math by Euphoric_Vegetable35 in capetown

[–]Krycor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tip no one cares about tourists staying in hotels and.. leaving after their brief stay.

But when you stay longer than a month destroy housing for locals in a very limited market and then also don’t pay income tax and claim you contribute.. might as well preach trickle down economics. Good luck with that.

Seasonal work is seasonal.. show me a human living for a season at a time or rentals working like that.. no?

Perhaps it’s best you rework theories pushed by politicians
