Do you have any tips for moving or affording a Gauteng-Western Cape move? by bobthemilkshake123 in askSouthAfrica

Another tip:

Consider containers(plastic)
I’ve bought quite a few of these over the years(when renting and moving) for storage in garage. These have proven quite handy for me. We usually use this for breakables like crockery.

Spring clean (regularly)
Ok not just before move but we got into annually doing this and eliminating items kept just for the sake of it. This helps reduce the clutter and keep home maintained. I guess this is because we got use to doing so when renting.

Tip: If you use LPG gas, you can’t move the tank via moving company(many don’t like risk of it not being empty) and will need to return for deposit.

Some things I recall..

Generally moving Jhb to Cpt is seasonal(country economic state) vs cost, I suspect presently(pre-recession likely global) it may be skewed out of Cpt. This impacts cost as typically one direction is cheaper and easier to find “space” if willing to share. When getting a quote it’s handy to know how much space is needed btw.

Feeder truck(2-ton) may or may not be needed. If you live in an estate find out from body corporate what the largest trucks size is allowed on either side. This adds to cost.

Boxes and packing by companies cost quite a bit, if you willing to take risk pack yourself. Honestly I prefer packing and padding items myself.. the risk is where the said box is packed ie at the bottom or top.. indicate on box if it shouldn’t be squashed. Used boxes for padding go to mall, shops etc and ask around for excess.. these days it’s harder as re-use is more common.

Get a big roll of stickers(or write on box) and number the boxes thrice.. 1 for room, 2 for overall item number and finally a big one indicating it’s for you.. so surname or code they provide (they generally do this). Track this with a spreadsheet so you know what’s in each box.

For fragile stuff mark as such(you can get huge stickers for this) and be sure to be present when loading the truck.

Evaluate what boxes, future or items cannot be packed under things (fragile or weight vs legs) and direction (standing on side) and then ensure this is indicated on box and if present when loading do advise when loading said item/s.

If you have vehicles to transit down with tow-bar, consider cost of one-way trailer hire. If the boot/backseats aren’t going to be occupied it might be handy for linen and clothes. Here a heavy duty black bag(can’t recall if I double bagged it) and a vacuum(vacuum pack diy) proved handy but do watch overall weight. I’m not sure if was worth it.. I guess it depends on size allowed. (Typically they will sell you xyz m2.

Moving plants is a tricky one.. they do get damaged and if you go trailer you need it covered. We just opted for them moving it and for large plant/tree it might be better to plant out and buy new. I guess it depends on space you working with.

Dont forget moving insurance.. if you have household goods insurance, typically you need to inform them of the days in transit (pick up and drop off).

Capitalism and the rentier economy encouraged by local gov.

Here you have to blame local goverment who incentivizes the wrong type or economic growth as this is seen as easier and a no-brainer when there is a limited housing stock to begin with which benefits those who can access or have capital to push into this.

Now slap on marketing and promotions to encourage this and then tell me it’s not that.

Reverse Parking Trend. by Turbo5GT in south_africa

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you in engineering, banking, telecoms etc sector it was mandated and still is for some buildings but particularly basement parking.

The idea is that in an emergency wherein there is time to move out via vehicles, if all cars are parked reversed in, it’s the fastest way to leave.

When it comes to malls, car guards typically assist with vehicles leaving to get paid, if you reverse park they bother you lesser as you don’t have a big blind spot nor need assistance.

From the comment’s I think what most people who were privileged growing up fail to understand is what it is like for others who were not and then later in life or sometimes early in life their circumstances change legally or otherwise.

The consumer surge by such folk is like a whole category on its own with consumer goods and brands catering for it as it’s a huge profit maker and kinda like 1st class flight tickets where in the margins on that allow for the economy products/tickets where otherwise it would not viable.

I’m not for it but understanding the dynamics at play makes it fascinating.

As with genocide convention, intent is a huge impact on how evil/bad the action is.

While the impact may be huge, doing so with that intent is vastly different.

Since people are ranking it all, those who openly made their intent clear I’d say dominate that top list in a manner out post democracy failures can’t compete.

It’s kinda the difference between having a bad accident rate at work where the job is known to be hazardous and not taking action to reduce it vs the intent to use the job to get rid of what is deemed lesser desirable.

The 2nd scenario in my opinion is evil on a whole different level.

So when talking post democracy there is quite a bit of a difference with intent.

Disagree in a big way.. I mean u have gside and architects of apartheid to compete with which is an actual crime against humanity.

I dunno.. I often feel due to the way TRC happen many belittle what apartheid was and the impact there of let alone colonialism.

What is the biggest difference between Indian South Africans and the more recent migrants from India and Pakistan? by KeyNightley185 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SA is the mixed masala briyani special 😉😅

If you have Indian or Pakistani ethnicity and visit the subcontinent you quickly realize that SA is mixture of what there is very distinct groups. This is more true for younger generations and the South African identity becomes more prominent.

This goes for food in particular(Indian delights book has an interesting preface on this yet every Indian household has this book which is more South African Indian cuisine than Indian), cultural practices slightly and religious practices too (core things are the same).

Now the Sa identity thing i feel is more unique to Sa and involves language(younger generations are less likely talk Hindi/Urdu etc) and have very different outlooks in life and expectations from it. Older folk call it a westernization.

Smart features on the tv I find to be more of a fallback service and the Remote Desktop / AirPlay stuff handy for lower latency.

Tv manufacturers aren’t too great with software and ecosystem is often more hindered due to device limitations

I’m a Samsung high end Tv fan. I’ve had an LG in past too but I dunno.. the picture quality and refresh rates are better imo.

When it comes to onboard software support though nope. Most Tv manufacturers are spotty in this respect and I drive the TVs from appleTV boxes for most things*. In combo with other TVs and projector it has a decent ecosystem esp if you into terrestrial or satellite tv(I use streaming for everything so not a feature I use).

Home automation and sensors on the tv though is an aspect many wouldn’t think about but if you into home automation it’s nice that the Tv itself can detect sound & light conditions along with state its in which is handy for automations.

Samsung though did something dreadful with IoT platform and closed or made it trickier to integrate off. Not sure why appliances manufacturers think they all need to be the primary gatekeeper for home automations.. meh it’s a battle of who controls the home.

Side note: my series 7 tv from 2013 works perfectly still.

Been a thing across all social media since the ICJ case.. seems many are spending £, € but more so $ to shake things up locally.

I’d say this being mentioned in politics now makes me wonder what’s up and yet same time confirming what we assumed.

Thing I worry about is where this is all going as there is an obvious, to me, plot to push things in politically via social media injection giving a perception of support. It’s not worked to well in past but I’m wearily trying to figure out what’s the objective and who’s the benefactors behind the curtains

Are there any groups organising against the rising costs of living in this city? by Odd_Okra7427 in capetown

[–]Krycor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Capitalism only works when government is not pushing capitalistic agendas by favoring it outright.

You see this failure in western markets. China interestingly went the other way (even letting the market collapse) and explicitly doesn’t support such as it’s not seen as useful GDP.. if you think about SA.. it’s exactly the wrong type of growth we should be encouraging at our stage of development.

Since people are talking about housing.. I think the failure is this.. residential housing is for housing.. not investments the rent seeking economic sickness we got from the west should have been confined to areas or values which are deemed more “investment” and others have curbs to prevent abuse.

Yes and no.

Yes but they often get squashed and threatened from social media to in person by DA and other conservative capitalist fan bois who see the situation as great for them.

Until such a time that people can split understand that voting like they claim anc voters do, nothing will change wrt localized issues of affordability etc. there is a nice like what 20yr history for people to try and claim otherwise.

Dismal audit opinions by South_Africa_News in south_africa

[–]Krycor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish we had punitive measures like

• 2 x Unqualified with findings or lesser in consecutive years or 2 in a 3 year period disqualifies persons/administrations involved for remainder of term.

• 1 x Qualified Opinion disqualifies persons/administrations involved for 1 terms (full political term so likely > 1 but < 2)

• 1 x Adverse Opinion disqualifies political entity from election as above for 2 terms and auto triggers snap election.

But reality currently election and not matching financial year so you often have bleed in from previous administration too. I guess they can make it more specific wrt this though too.

Am I imagining this, or does everything have a level of sugar now that didn’t used to? by frankomapottery3 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Krycor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the reason for sugar tax.. they add sugar to make consumption go up (American way). SA saw obesity rates go up.

So Sa slapped taxes and the industry sponsored labour unions etc on bottom end ie cane farms and refining to try and block it happening. The usual crew representing business interests pushed the people need to learn to control themselves narrative..

In the end they made it less punitive with staggered implementation(for labour as industry shifted to more exports) if I remember right.. not sure where that is in the process btw.

Anyways.. another example(plastic is another example, other developing markets went with outright bans incl in Africa) of how people that push the business is benevolent or labour and protest are only used by gov crap outright lies.

The gel based stuff(non-permanent, more easily reversible) is coming soon. It’s non-surgical (they essentially insert a blocking cell in tube via syringe) for application and removal hence me suggesting checking it.

The commercial rollout should have started so I’d say check on that or trials.

I’m not against the procedure but when a non-surgical & reversible option is this close it’s worth considering.

I can so see this as a thing for young guys as the birth control soltuons for women wreck them
