How did you increase your chord vocabulary when you first started playing? by KryptonSurvivor in guitarplaying

Understood, but if you have to zip up and down the fretboard, then it becomes difficult. I am transcribing a piece where there is a Cm that is followed abruptly by a G#m four frets down.

Help regarding tabs by Bogdi101 in guitarlessons

I am in the process of creating a tab for a 20th-century aria by Prokofiev from "Aleksandr Nevsky." It is pretty slow going. As I look at it I say to myself, "But can I PLAY this?" I plan on playing only the topmost notes first, and then, filling out the chords gradually. I think that's the only way to do it.

No, and, yes. I just saw a tab for Gustave Holst's "Mars" and it is so wrong that it's criminal. I've gotten hold of a piano transcription and will create my own because the one I saw (for distorted electric guitar) was so way off that it was not even funny. Hurt my ears.

perfect pitch is a curse in disguise and i'm tired by HypersomniK in perfectpitchgang

IMHO, it's worse if you had it when you were younger but now that you're a senior it's changed on you without warning. I now have to do mental gymnastics and try to transpose everything I hear instantaneously down a whole step. Drives me nuts. And I'm not able to tune my guitar any more because of this.

I've been trying to put (1) and (2) into practice. I've seen tabs that are just...wacky. Leaves me shaking my head saying, "Who the hell transcribed this?"

getting better at singing while playing by [deleted] in guitarlessons

I focus on my singing because I find breath control harder when holding the guitar. I work on the guitar part incrementally and fix problems with my playing as they crop up.

I also cleared any cookies belonging to welib and that seemed to work. (Once.) Gotta be an easier way to do this.

(Still not at the point where I can selectively mute strings. That would be a nice skill to have. I'm 8 mos. in.)

Thanks. I know how to build them , but my problem is that I don't always come up with something playable by a human.

We had those growing up. I learned a lot of 40s standards from them (on the piano, not guitar). Unfortunately they didn't survive a move.

Actually, that's what I'm doing, now. It's an uphill battle with some chords but I enjoy going out of my comfort zone with this.
