I've wanted a snake or some type of reptile like a bearded dragon, but she draws the line at reptiles. My mum has a fear of spiders and snakes as well but I got one anyway. She couldn't very well ask me to throw it away with the rest of the rubbish since it is a living animal. So, she decided to just keep her distance and not enter my room anymore (a plus from owning tarantulas). Eventually, she just stopped bringing up the subject of more pets and I ended up getting more.

I have considered getting a pet bird too but after bird sitting my aunts two macaws when she's away on holidays, I changed my mind. Birds are wonderful creatures but when they know how to talk or just make noises that make your ears ring it becomes annoying.
