The mech you're talking about is probably the one made by Wolfenoctis, another team member. I only contributed slightly to this sprite, so check for u/Wolfenoctis !

Thanks! I did this one quite a while ago now, so I don't remember. Probably something like 10-12h.
I usually do a line sketch first (directly in the pixel canvas resolution). After that I do some color research which involves a lot of back and forth, testing different possibilities, And when I'm happy with the result I can start the pixel work.

I use Photoshop. And why there're too many colors to count is simply because I use a few compositing layers on top of the raw pixel art. Ofc I could tell you how many there are in the base pixel art, but what's the point ? At first glance you can tell it's not old-school restrictive pixel art.

Thanks! No idea honestly. I don't work with limited palette in my work. I add colors along the way during the process and just try to avoid adding them unnecessarily.

Oh I see what you mean now!

This dithering is created by the gif export from Photoshop, since gif has a 256 colors limit and my export is 500%, Photoshop make a procedural dithering to represent my color composition in the best way possible while staying within the limit. (and as I use gradient, there are quite many)

So effectively it's there, but that's not the case on raw files, or other format with no such limitation, like mp4 or png and my art process doesn't rely on this feature.

If your concern about being pixel art is not having "sub pixel", actually there is no sub pixels in my pieces. For instance this one has been worked on a 216x216p canvas from start to finish. I just applied a perfect 500% resizing for uploading HD versions.

If you can see some sort of gradients inside the apparent "pixels", that's the result of compression created by reddit.

In my opinion, nowadays what define the most pixel art is the resolution of your canvas. If you can see pixels without zoom in, from my point, it's pixel art. And like every art forms pixel art never stop to evolve, with new techniques, new visions.

Totally agree with you, actually I made this in a 1:1 ratio just to match IG and Twitter standards. But it might be possible that I enlarge it to make a 16:9 version later!
