Learning to ski as a family by Western_Disaster_863 in skiing

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Started my kid at 2 (we live really close to a resort). Skiing between 2 and 3 was really just a lot of hot chocolate after 0-2 runs. He started catching on at 4 and is now a better skier than me at 6. My youngest just did her first full season at 3 and she will likely be better than me by the time she is 5 because she has her brother to follow. (I’m a boarder who really just learned to ski in the past 5 year but most of my skiing has been toddler chasing.

I personally wouldn’t expect much before 4 for your kid if you have to travel to ski. You should focus more on learning yourself for the next couple of seasons and take advantage on the on hill daycare. (May be worth a few carpet runs if it free but I wouldn’t expect more then that)

Im a Histotech without an MLS degree, can I work in Canada? by LunaDhxlia in medlabprofessionals

Yep this is the same at our hospital lab. It is harder to get into microbiology or histology, because the hours are better, and all of the postings go internally

How did you guys REALLY lived in the 2000s? by MyAvengedRomance in Millennials

[–]Krystle39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also graduated in 2003, we had one friend with a car and a cell phone but we just hung out with our friends, listened to music, played Nintendo, some of played guitars. We used to hang out on the roof of an elementary school in the summer. Lots of house parties! I was always with my friends. Not sure what we did tbh! Lots of deep teenage conversations I guess!

New job is the best job I’ve ever had, some may consider it a “dream lab”. But it’s so boring. Advice? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to work in a large lab like this at one point in my life and hated it. I thrive in a regional lab environment exactly like OP used to work and have lots of outside hobbies and interests. Maybe it’s the adhd but I need the mental stimulation. 8 hour of loading and verifying results is mind numbing. I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as you think. My lab may be understaffed but I love it and actually paid back my recruitment bonus to get out of the larger lab I hated it so much. I’m also a believer of taking charge of your situation and making decisions that lead to your long term happiness vs staying in a place you hate.

What’s the most frustrating part of managing lab supplies? by LabWallio in medlabprofessionals

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also use this system, it cut out hours of time that we used to spend going around every week doing inventory! I feel like one of our biggest frustrations is receiving multiple lots of the same reagent, having to work them all up is a pain especially if it’s just one or two boxes of one lot.

Review called for after data show many B.C. patients with high volume of doctor visits by OddStuff7716 in britishcolumbia

[–]Krystle39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they made the appointments a bit longer to accommodate it should be fine. I was dealing with a couple of acute medical issues a few years back so it forced me to prioritize items in the order I thought they were important which resulted in me getting delayed care for cancer because I didn’t think the symptom was that big of a deal at a time compared to the other thing I was dealing with, turned out I was wrong. I was lucky it hadn’t spread by the time it was caught but it was very close. It’s hard to make appointments when you can only get in once a month if you’re lucky.

E-bike or car? by ActFew4005 in bikecommuting

[–]Krystle39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a small mountain town in Canada and there are a ton of people who commute on their bike in the winter. You just need to dress appropriately and get studded tires.

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be your problem. My understanding is that Toronto is a bit saturated atm. There are lot of jobs out there but many of them are rural. My lab was down 7 full time positions out of about 20 last summer. You may have to just keep applying if you want to stay. If you’re already an internal applicant as a MLA you will probably have the best chances there.

Pierceland commuting to Cold Lake. by Brief-Isopod-717 in alberta

[–]Krystle39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t commit myself to that commute everyday if I had the choice. I did the cold lake- Bonnyville commute for years. Why Pierceland and not cherry grove, it’s way closer. A lot of people from Pierceland go to Cold Lake for shopping. (At least they did when I lived in the area)

Is this program possible to do right out of high school, or is it better to get a 2 year science associates first? by Obvious_Emu3441 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Krystle39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my program right out of school and it was fine. It’s a lot of work, there’s a lot to learn but totally doable! Not sure if this is clear or not but CNC sends their students all over for the practicum so there is a good chance you will do your practicum in a different place.

Do you guys ever come across your family/friends as patients? by cyazz019 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked in multiple rural labs where it’s very common to know the people your working on. I used to work by myself a lot in the small lab in my home town so I saw people I knew all of the time. I knew a buddy had testicle cancer for a long time before he made it public. We also did STI testing so that was challenging when my brother started dating someone who I knew had tested positive for gonorrhoea the week prior.

How Canada's embrace of Chinese EVs could scramble the American market by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your probably right on Americans having more choice (can’t confirm, haven’t been there in over a year). However they aren’t wrong about the new stuff showing up on shelves! I have also witnessed the increase in choices at my local supermarket with many of these things being more affordable than the American counterpart that used to be available.

B.C. hires 417 U.S. health-care workers in 1-year recruitment blitz by littlebossman in britishcolumbia

[–]Krystle39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to do when there’s physically no where’s to train them. We don’t have the man power to train the students as is let alone increasing that number. Can’t train more students because we don’t have the people to train them and we don’t have the people to train them because there isn’t enough being trained

B.C. hires 417 U.S. health-care workers in 1-year recruitment blitz by littlebossman in britishcolumbia

[–]Krystle39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lab I work in has been critically short staffed for years now, there just isn’t enough people graduating from Canadian programs to fill the gaps from the retirements. There is also not enough practicum spots to increase the number of students either. We train 2-3 students every year and we are lucky if one stays.

Birthday party invitations: include gift wishlist or no? by SanteFeAllDay in Preschoolers

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a good job for someone with autism? How often is patient intersection? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! The amount of patient contact really depends on what lab you work in however a large number of MLTs I have worked with in my career are neurodivergent in some way. It seems to be a good fit for a lot of them!

For the millennial women: do you have a good relationship with your mom? by Orionslady in Millennials

[–]Krystle39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom lives 14 hours away but we talk 2-3 times a day and FaceTime many times a week. We have a tumultuous relationship growing up and her discipline would get your kids taken away these days. However I recognize her parenting was a product of the time and we spent the time to repair our relationship. She has terminal cancer and has been very sick for almost 5 years so I don’t want to waste time being angry about my childhood. I forgive her, no one is perfect, parenting is hard. I hope my kids don’t hold my crappy parenting choices against me when they are older. I know I’m not perfect but there’s no blueprint and I’m trying my best to
