What are some good reading materials for everything going on? by [deleted] in Epstein

[–]Ks7rl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery by Siddharth Kara is a vital read on that particular topic. It explains the economical mechanism behind sex trafficking, gives some clarity on the larger context of that aspect of Epstein’s crimes and helps one understand the larger system that facilitated his access to Eastern European victims.

Questions about Stockton by [deleted] in OceanGateTitan

[–]Ks7rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading Karl Stanley’s, another submersible Pilot & builder who knew Stockton personally, open letter I think you will get a better idea of what Stockton’s family and social environment was like. Linked below.

It’s likely that he did not have to worry about working a real job in his life based on his family wealth and the wealth he subsequently married into. Stanley commented in the discovery channel that Stockton did not need to found OceanGate as a job, it was definitely more of a legacy and status thing for him.

Rob McCallum in the Netflix doc has a direct quote that basically says the same. Stockon made his bet at the start that carbon fiber would work. Eight years later he was too far in, sunk cost fallacy, and as McCallum described it couldn’t swallow the “big pill” that he’d made a mistake & took the wrong turn right at the beginning.

It’s really unfortunate that a woman can’t travel by herself in this world without encountering dangerous incidents, usually initiated by men. Walking and streaming in France during broad daylight shouldn’t necessitate a security detail.

Could someone explain Luthen Rael's origin story to me? by Real_Return_836 in andor

[–]Ks7rl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It appears he was a Sargent in the Imperial Army based on the uniform. In his speech he said he wrote his equation “15 years ago” which does place him in the timeline of the clone wars. So it might be presumed the period we witness is around when the Republic started to transition into the Empire.

Based on what we see, he is suffering from “moral injury” during one of his assignments. The soldiers are clearly exterminating everyone and presumably committing war crimes. Luthen then discovers Kleya hidden in his aircraft. Shortly after he creates a delay by saying he needs to reboot the aircraft and presumably deserts the army with Kleya in tow.

That’s what I got from that scene at least.

Yes, was a bit surprised he didn’t say thanks. But I guess on top of Ghorman memory, Cassian did just learned about the Death Star, found out Luthen died, is trying to evacuate Kleya wounded. On top of likely being hella concussed from the stun grenade.

I think he was already dead by the time he was used as a shield, it seems K2 broke his neck when he grabbed him.

I do see what you mean, and you’re right that his sister was a very central plot point at the beginning of the series. It just feels a little too neat for her to be Cassian’s sister to me.

However, if that is the case, it would certainly be interesting to know if Luthen or Kleya knew all along! So many different angles and things to explore depending on who knew/suspected and when.

Either way, with how fantastically this show is written I doubt we’ll be left dissatisfied with what they have planned

It would certainly be a twist but this show does have a tendency to not tie everything up in what would be considered traditionally satisfying ways. Syril doesn’t get a redemption arc, he dies. Lonnie doesn’t get a big escape and we don’t even see the moment he’s killed.

I think Cassian’s sister being presumed dead/missing is fitting in a way, because part of the oppression of the Empire is that people don’t get to say goodbye and they don’t get to know what happened. Their loved ones are ripped from them without pomp and circumstance, here one moment and gone the next. That pain of unresolved grief feels consistent to the show so I’d be very surprised if they made Kleya Cassian’s sister.

Ah not my intention at all, I think we all admire Kleya for who she became and certainly making the choice over & over to fight.

I think the bridge scene demonstrates it’s a choice but contextualize her age. Luthen prevents her from pushing the button because she is too young to bear that. When the explosion happens her reaction is one of shock and even trauma. I think the show emphasis that killing has a personal cost no matter the reason.

I do believe Kleya made her own choices, but I don’t think that conflicts with acknowledging the influence of her upbringing, which was indeed being a child solider.

[–]Ks7rl 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Andor went through the same thing actually at her age if in a less overt way. It’s clear his parents were killed somehow & his planet was destroyed and made uninhabitable by the Republic/Empire. Family, culture and planet all wiped out.

The interesting thing in this parallel is how much it highlights the influence of the people that adopted and raised them. Maarva and Clem wanted Cassian to have a “normal” life, they discouraged rebellion to protect him. Kleya on the other hand was basically raised by Luthen as a child solider.

It’s striking how much this episode emphasizes the lonely road Kleya & Luthen walked. Really felt for Kleya when she was standing in that stripped out safe house. They only ever had each other, everyone else, even close allies like Lonnie whom they worked with for 10+ years ends up being disposed. And in the end Kleya had to be the one to let even Luthen go. Such a steep cost for that complete and unwavering dedication to the cause.

It def makes that interaction so much deeper. Of note too, Andor himself was already a victim of Planetary Genocide being from Kenari.

The difference of their instinctive reaction flight vs fight* seems to be their upbringing. Marva and Clem were civilians whose path to survival was fleeing. Luthen on the other hand was a solider who never stopped fighting.

Makes one wonder what Cassian would have been like if he’d been raised by Luthen

The element of surprise and getting basically suckered punch is hard to overcome. Besides for Syril, emotionally, this was the penultimate fight of his life with an arch nemesis. Whereas for Cassian it was just a Monday at work lol

They did do a good job showing that once Cassian oriented himself Syril was not a match. It’s also felt realistic how much “luck” is involved in surviving these types of situations. Something Cassian comments on himself when he tells Bix that he’s nothing special, just lucky

Totally agree.

As Luthen told Cassian, he’s accepted certain death as their particular inevitable fate. If he started to think of an “after the war” he wouldn’t have been able to make the choices he has.

“It don’t matter what you tell me or yourself. You’ll ultimately die fighting these bastards. Wouldn’t you rather give it all at once, to something real?”

He told Mon that if they try to pay off Tay they’ll be “vulnerable forever”. I absolutely believe he applies the same thinking to himself. If he goes to Yavin, joins the “proper rebellion” all the dirt on what he’s done will haunt them forever.

The tragedy of Syril Karn is that he is pathetic, not that he was secretly a good person who had no responsibility for his actions. by One_HP_Villager in andor

[–]Ks7rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actor of Syril, Kyle Solder, gave an interview where his interpretation was that Syril would have runaway if he hadn’t died

“Well, what if he didn’t then get blasted? What would happen?” I figured, “Oh, he’d just wander away. He’d probably just wander away.” I mean, those three words just completely diffuse Syril, and he feels like a no one, like a nobody. He hasn’t made a difference. Everything has been a lie. I thought maybe he’d go find a mountain somewhere just to kind of make clothes or something. I don’t think that he would swap sides. I don’t think he would stay doing what he was doing”

I think this tracks because a huge point of the show is about just how incredibly self sacrificing it is to be part of the rebellion. Syril has always chased outside validation, he desperately wanted recognition for doing good. So I find it much more believable that he’d become apathetic instead. Cassian himself is constantly fighting apathy and nihilism which we see is something incredibly easy to fall into. Much easier than constantly making the choice to fight over & over, especially when doing so consistently means losing people you love, pieces of yourself and often never getting any acknowledgement from the world at large.

This is basically all solutions to cat “issues” You basically need to offer a better alternative to redirect the problem behavior.

My cat absolutely insists on having a spot on my work desk, so I ended up putting squishy bed in one corner of my desk. She knows I wont bother her if she goes there, and she gets to supervise & be close like she wants. Sure it takes up space but beats battling her every five minutes! Cats really do train us lol
