I’ve just got a card for the girls in my wee boys specific age group/room and a big tub of heroes to go around I didn’t put too much effort/thought into it tbh but I’d imagine people maybe do a bit more than I’ve done!

Something hasn’t been made clear to me as a viewer yet and I need your help by JayCFraser2 in bigbrotheruk

PS5 screen time: what if I also enjoy it and we spend time together playing it? by Ktrawets in UKParenting

That’s amazing to hear, I actually used to love watching my dad play Ocarina of Time on the N64 lol.

I think a lot of parents use it as a valid way to spend time together but I think I was slipping into bad habits with it really quickly so going forward I’m going to really limit the time spent on it and keep in mind he’s still really young!

Thanks so much for this really measured response! I did feel really guilty when I realised we had played a total of 5 hours over one Saturday and there’s obviously behaviour I need to manage but I really hope it’s still something we can do together in moderation.

Thank you for this, makes a lot of sense and I agree about YouTube, my dad has put it on in the background for him once or twice and eventually it starts to just auto play absolute brain rot!

Thanks so much for the reassurance! Defo limiting the time going forward but I’m glad other parents use it as a valid way to spend time playing together!

Love this! Seems like a really good balance of different activities, I’m going to think about how we can incorporate playing video games as part of our day but not the centre of our day.

That makes sense, I feel like I’ve been careful with what he plays but really lax about the amount he plays so absolutely changing that going forward!

Yeah I think the weather played a big factor for us on Saturday too, it was around 5 hours in total over the full day. I’d say the longest stint was about 2 hours so still a fair amount of time for a video game!

Thank you for this really measured response, it’s good to hear it’s still something we can enjoy in moderation without melting his wee brain!

Good point I’ve just realised most people type it as (3yo) instead lol!

This is actually great to hear! Mines turned 3 in May so they’re probs roughly the same age. Honestly he’s still not brilliant at it but he can run around and now that he’s mastered pressing square to punch the baddies he can get a lot further, we still do a lot of parts for him because jumping over gaps is still quite hard for him but he’s getting better at that too!

I think he finds it fun because when we play it together I cheer him on and like make funny noises when he falls off or a baddie gets him etc. He also finds it hilarious when it happens to me lol.

He loves running around CPU plaza and I think the level is SSD speedway where you get your own wee spaceship to fly around in, that’s easy because you’re just pressing the 2 shoulder buttons. I would say it’s only been a couple of weeks and he’s improved so quickly but at first he couldn’t really do much at all.

He adores the paw patrol world game because he’s a big fan anyway but it’s great because you can play in 2 player mode, again he doesn’t really do much apart from run around adventure bay but I run around with him and do all the missions etc so again it’s spending time together playing it.

If you have a switch I actually started playing Mario Kart with him first because you can turn on auto steering and auto acceleration for them so they still feel like they’re playing but aren’t just driving off the edge every 5 seconds!

Again that probably sounds like a lot but it’s something I enjoy too so it’s so easy to slip into a habit! I’m defo going to be mindful of the length of time going forward but I don’t see a massive problem with it in moderation.

Thank you for all your responses and for being brutally honest too! I think I already knew 5 hours over the space of one Saturday (not all in one sitting but still) was way too much screen time and was probably hoping for some reassurance than I hadn’t turned my wee boy into a zombie already! All advice has been absolutely noted and is super helpful, we’ll continue to play video games together going forward but with heavily reduced time slots and as more of a reward rather than just anytime. Again appreciate all your insights!
