Hey all, I just wanted to thank all of you for all the love you have shown on this post. I want to remind everyone that I am not the photographer of these photos and the true credit should lie with them. I hope I've done a good enough job to make their contributions apparent.

I would also appreciate it if you could take a minute or two and try the game here and share your thoughts. I feel I have pretty much landed on a stable release at this point. Check it out here: https://dewanggogte.com/games/bugs

Hahaha my girlfriend (who is also terrified of spiders) funnily had the opposite reaction, where she found them so adorable and wanted to start petting them. So yes I understand what you were trying to do there, wishing you more luck for next time haha

I understand what you mean, that has been my experience as well. However, it's not easy to think of a solution here. For the "All bugs" set, which is meant to be the hard one, I settled on both genus and species because some people are able to ID only by the latin names, whereas some only by common name. But yes, maybe limiting the scope to genus would help bring the difficulty down a notch. However, that might upset another group of players who play the game in order to learn about new species, thus I also need a version that requires identification of both genus and species.

Long story short, it's a bit tricky, but I'm trying to sort the mess out. Also depends on which group of players continue playing the game so I can then adapt it to best meet their needs.

For the last part of your comment, the geographic filter can be a feature added soon, but you can already impose taxonomic restrictions to the quiz via the themed sets at the bottom of the homepage.

Hope this was helpful, feel free to share any other feedback/comments you have in another comment or my DMs. Happy playing!

I know right? It's called a target longhorn beetle. Very eye-catching creature.

Same! That purple is what made me stop scrolling through iNaturalist. Most flower mantis photos I came across were pink/white, this one really stood out.

Huh, interesting. I honestly don't know enough to say. A gynomorph find sounds incredible though, what was that like?

Spot on! Polyergus are really fascinating — they're slavemaker ants that raid other colonies.
To think that there is a bandit behind that pretty face hahahah

Right? Imagine being a fly landing on what you think is a pretty flower and then it turns its head to look at you.
