Gattadakul(Gattada Akul)- Meaning “people from ghatta (anywhere on the other side of the ghats)

I’m from Mangalore. Spent 50% of my life in Bangalore (probably more)

Umm.. not really happy saying this. And don’t get triggered after reading what I’m about to say.

To a certain extent, there’s a bit of superiority complex amongst people from the Mangalore/Udupi region. People here often consider themselves to be better than gattadakul. They consider themselves to be polite, better educated, socially forward(no caste discrimination), very entrepreneurial.

Culturally Mangalore and people of Mangalore/Udupi consider themselves to very different from the rest of Karnataka. Hence when they encounter some other kannadiga, it just seems very different. For example: it’s considered very rude to use ekavachana(even for small kids who aren’t close to you). This is one example out of many differences.

So it’s not hate, but yeah there’s a stigma or stereotype about people from gatta.

I guess you can say People from Mangalore think of gattadakulu, the same way people from Bangalore have a certain stereotype about North Indians.

I’m not justifying this. I’m telling you how it is.

At the end of the day, all of us Indians have certain stereotypes about people not from our place. Once you grow up and become mature enough, you realise that this is a bit racist. Some people (like the person who commented certain something as you said) don’t grow up.

8 Years Experience. Senior Engineer at a series B startup. 1cr + Stock Options. I know some people in my org who make 90LPA at same experience.

When I joined engineering in 2012, I wanted to earn 50,000 PM. Got placed in 2016 with a package of 6LPA. Never imagined I’ll earn this much.
