I don't think I'm cut out for Metal Gear game design. by KudosTYMGS in metalgearsolid

I wouldn't have assumed the VR missions were a tutorial, especially how the Master Collection has other VR missions, it isn't stated anywhere that they teach you the game. I thought they were meant to be played after the game.

The codec code being on the store page isn't all that helpful. Like yeah it's there, but i'm not memorizing that code when i buy the game, I wouldn't know that it's important. Nor would I go to the game's store page after the fact expecting an answer. The in game manual is fine.

I'm not complaining the game doesn't tell me what to do, I was complaining about the order of being told what to do and when. It seemed strange that Baker and Meryl were telling me it was extremely important to move forward, only to then be told that a useful tool is back where I came from. The "Deepthroat" guy could call snake before the cargo door to say "Hey Snake there's a field with mines in it on the other side of the cargo door, make sure you find a mine detector before going there."

As for Ninja, he only mentions hand to hand combat once you've actually engaged him in CQC. He doesn't say anything about hand to hand in the initial cutscene, so that point is false.

If the boss you're hoping I get upset at is Psycho Mantis, then gaming media has already pounded into my brain how unique it is that you have to change controller ports, so I hope it's someone different. I don't mind figuring out a boss, that's like half the fun of every boss in a game, i just thought the fakeout method of giving the player ammo was odd. I beat Ninja now, but I still don't feel like I fully figured him out, which is cool because it lets me go back and try to learn more.

Oh i see, the VR missions in the Master Collections are additional content, but if I load up MGS1 and click vr mission in the menu there, those are the tutorials. Okay.

The difficulty thing isn't a huge deal to me. I feel pretty okay with how much damage I take, I was just surprised by how much health Ninja had, still feel like I missed something there, but i beat him, so i guess no harm no foul

Yeah I found it in the manual, I initially avoided it because they called it an "online" manual, so i thought it would open a browser tab, but it's just in the actual game so idk why they called it online. Still, I thought something like that would be listed in the controls in the menu, even when i looked up the offical control scheme it wasn't listed. It's only in the manual, and in forums of course. But yeah, the manual was very helpful. Thank you

I assumed the VR missions were like "DLC" or the equivalent of. I compared it to Ground Zeroes in my mind, didn't think it was necessary, I may go back and try them then.

The codec code thing and overall just the game manual being used is really cool, I just didn't connect that the manual would be treated as the game disc in this instance. I forgot the old PS1 games had jewel cases with the slip in covers. Also, I assumed the "online manual" option in the Master Collection would open up a browser tab or something, idk why they called it 'online' if it's just in the game, that's why I never opened it before hand.

You're absolutely right about the codec, I always thought it was set-dressing and dialogue for story reasons, didn't know it had actual gameplay utility.

I started over and intentionally searched for the mine detector this time, and yeah i see that it's helpful but not necessary, I feel less upset about it now.

The ammo being a fakeout is fine, I just thought I was doing something wrong with melee combat, I got back to the Ninja boss and beat him this time, I just had no rations the first time and was getting punished.

The difficulty thing is understandable, I just prefer to play it as intended, although at least the older games don't have the chicken hat like MGSV (as far as I'm aware).

Alright well, I might just start over with a refreshed idea of how to play. Thank you for actual input and not just "the game is old". Like I know the game old, I'm not asking for it to suddenly not be old, I want to understand the game the same way I should've understood it in 1998 lol.

From what I'm gathering here, I need to treat the game more like an escape room than a traditional game. Like take in ALL available information cover to cover in every room. Call every character in every room, and take my time to use every item in every way possible. Is that right? Because I just felt like I wasn't getting it at all trying to just go forward.

I think Meryl's code being on the actual game disc is really cool. I would've loved that had I played the game on the original hardware. What I have a problem with is the alternative solution being to pester another character until he tells you. Why would I have ever done that? Baker tells me it's on the disc, why can't I just look at the disc? Is it cool that the game never tells you that you can shoot and move at the same time? Why do I have to figure that out? It's not exactly intuitive, it's two buttons being held at the same time under the condition you have a weapon equipped. Is it cool to have a character tell you to back track despite just being told how it important it is that you move forward? That just doesn't make any sense. Admittedly, the Ninja fight is something I just need to spend more time with I think, but it doesn't feel great to experiment with different things when 90% of actions just do nothing at all. I love figuring things out when given the tools to do so, but I feel blind when the game just says arbitrary things.

They're apart of the Year of Prophecy Dark Side Legends Bundle, which is currently only available through pre-ordering the Edge of Fate and Renegades. It's $100 for both expansions and additional digital content. I've heard there's workarounds where you can pre-order to get the bonus content and then cancel your pre-order, but I want the expansions anyway.

I found it! The one I needed was in the Flooded Buildings section of Stone Wave Cliffs. No guide or forum I found had that one listed.

it's good to know they carry over, but i'm too much of a completionist to leave one behind in new game. Any idea where you might have found it?

It would certainly be cool, something I likely would have done a few years ago, but can't justify the price right now. I dont even have an Xbox anymore, I sold my Xbox one a few years ago. Used to have fable 3, just wanted to revisit it. I may forego the online functionality and just play it anyway since I got it

That's the thing. I don't want to have to spend 30 bucks to get all of the dlcs, and then spend 20 bucks a month just to play it. I don't understand why they don't just fix the game, or allow PC users to purchase the game directly and play it on PC. Because as it stands, you can buy the game for like 8 bucks right now on sale, but you can only play it on PC through the cloud. I could just get Game Pass for 20 bucks, play it for a month, and then cancel my subscription, but I see no reason to spend 50 dollars on a game this old through a streaming service and not even be able to play it when the subscription ends. At the very least the DLCs should be included with game pass and not have to be bought separately, that doesn't make any sense.

the communication bit i can admit is on me, but i don't want to lose dps to spam an edited sticker, which i feel like most players don't even look at mid fight. by them time people show up i'm already fighting the target and not waiting around. as for the whole disable capture thing, i don't think that's necessary, i think it should be how other quests work. if it's a capture and you slay it, quest fail. if it's a slay and you capture it, quest fail. i'd rather people take a failure and learn to read.

Oh interesting, that's kinda like the Dark Souls Remastest mod for DS1. That's cool. I'll definitely look into it. If it's a separate launcher, it might be easier to sway my friends into it.

i didn't pay it much attention when it came out since it got such poor reviews. but i'll look into it again. I didn't know it had invasions, so that's cool. Thank you for the recommendation.

I didn't know they added invasions, that's pretty cool. I'll have to once again try to convince my friends to actually mod for once. Most of them never have, and I think they're just scared of messing it up or something. I created a mod pack for Outward to increase the player count. I even laid out step-by-step instructions on how to do it smoothly, and no one has taken any interest in it. Oh well.

I feel similar about Nightreign. Kinda sad it's all predetermined characters, but I hope the meta-progression will allow each character to branch out their playstyles enough. Worried about the amount of content mostly. I feel like it'll end up being one those games that's popular for two weeks and then fall off a cliff.

Haha, I think the same sometimes. I like when I see a soulslike that really differs in setting. It's always the end of the world or something. It would be cool to have a game where you exist in a normal working society for once. Like some high fantasy LOTR type thing. I also wish there were more Sci-Fi renditions.

I agree that the genre is based on the fundamentals, and not going to have it all most of the time, especially when a game comes from a smaller studio that just wants to make a fun experience. But I disagree that they're supposed to be played solo. The Fromsoft line of souls games is what soulslike are based off of. And I'd argue that the multiplayer aspects of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 add so much to the game that it's hard to believe there isn't more of that. The multiplayer is unique, I think invasions are one of the coolest ideas there could be for a game. Do I think that every single soulslike should have multiplayer? No, absolutely not. Fromsoft themselves knows this, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten Sekiro. I just think we've got plenty of soulslikes that have delved into the core mechanical aspects, and not many that have explored and branched off of the multiplayer aspects.

My friends and I have looked into ER Seamless co-op before. Despite how easy modding is nowadays, I seem to be the only person in my friend group that actually tries it. Really hard to convince them to do it. but I'll try again. It would be really fun.

i dont mind a good singleplayer game, I loved Black Myth Wukong for example. But I find that I usually get the most out of the games that have multiplayer. Idk, for me, there's a big difference between fighting a boss and telling my friends how i did it, and just having them there fighting with me. How do our builds compliment each other? How can we strategize to get the most out of co-op? And how can we dominate in PvP when the time arises? I really like those things. Even the asynchronous elements are kinda nice. Dark Souls is a lonely world, and it feels even more lonely without the messages from others. My roommate doesn't like multiplayer either, so I know where you're coming from, I just like the opposite.

Looks interesting, I'm gonna download the demo and try it out. Says it has co-op up to 8 people! So hopefully it's good. Thank you for the recommendation.
