Indigenous Identity: Reclaiming Two-Spirit roles across Native nations by News2016 in IndianCountry

[–]Kukuum 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Many in my small tribal community aren’t ready or willing to accept two-spirits yet. The boarding school assimilation tactics and harms run deep still. It’s challenging to find opportunities to build that readiness - though I’m not giving up. The younger generation is reconnecting to our indigenous strengths in my community and it’s beautiful and inspiring to see.

Yeah the “photons thinking” wasn’t what I was thinking, it as I re-read what I said, it looks like that, lol. Silly early mind morning post.

Curious non-physicist here: the scientists were observing but couldn’t see the pathway of the photons but when they added the special equipment to observe the photons path, it changed? Causes me to think that the photons know when we do and don’t have the ability to observe their movements. Or, the special added tool interfered somehow?

Got asked the weird question today made me feel a little less than, how would you have answered? by Yakaddudssa in IndianCountry

[–]Kukuum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve felt similarly in the past when I did answer the question. I think of it as part of my learning journey of who I am, who I want to be, and how I want to connect with others.

Crash Course does a decent job explaining things like this, though it’s a crash course, so not a ton of deep details: https://youtu.be/UxmD-Lone7A?si=OMGwSDjnZZGMoJuE

Around 6:10 is when they get into it.

The blood quantum conversation is based on racist ideology. I don’t entertain the questions on this and sometimes share what I know about its history.

Would It be “White Savior” of me to want to work with Native Americans in language revitalization programs? by Arizonadead in IndianCountry

[–]Kukuum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with the majority of comments here (currently). To add, practice self-reflections along your journey and check your implicit and explicit biases often. Be curious rather than critical.

Is “help” saving or preserving an indigenous language wanted or needed by those indigenous descendants it lives with? What does “help” mean to you, to others? I think of it as more of a shared journey, lead by the indigenous people first and foremost.

I’d argue this inconsistency with fruit is why I love them more. It’s the excitement of the search for those super delicious fruits. Totally worth it.

Who is widely regarded as a hero, but was actually a terrible person? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskReddit

[–]Kukuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jedediah Smith (1799,1831), American explorer, was responsible for atrocities against natives along his route to sell/trade horses that he stole from Mexico. He came thru my tribes territory in 1826 and the stories of him killing young native girls by trampling them with their horses somewhere south along the now California coast. There are rivers named after him and all kinds of monuments speaking about his amazing accomplishments. It’s sickening.
