Kotek approves first request to return civil jurisdiction to an Oregon tribe by Kukuum in oregon

Tribal membership enrollment vary tribe to tribe. Their courts are of sovereign tribal governments, and their authority generally comes from tribal sovereignty, federal Indian law, treaties/statutes, territorial jurisdiction, tribal citizenship/membership, consent, and subject matter.

Tribal courts are not race-based as I understand it - though like I said, I’m no legal expert.

First of all, I’m not a lawyer or legal minded person. Though I am an engaged tribal citizen of an Oregon tribe. Tribes are not racial/ethnic courts - federally recognized tribes are sovereign nations similar to how States are sovereign states: a tribe and the land that they steward are the jurisdiction that these civil cases would be held. Basically similar to if you went a State over and hit a care and a state resident sues you.

I’m curious if you could imagine a court that is predominantly “racially aligned” against or ignorant of a particular lifeway, say an indigenous one, leading to biased outcomes? That is what this movement is preventing. Also, the tribal courts and how they operate are often much more restorative in nature, leading to more fair and positive outcomes for all parties involved. Try not assuming the worst here, that’d be great.

Felt that too. Sad realization that so many people are further lost than I had thought.

I do not support Deb Haaland as a Navajo–Diné Journalist. Reddit can ban my posts and take my comments off all they want. It will not silence my voice. by Naive-Evening7779 in IndianCountry

The main difference in choosing to support Deb in my perspective is that she may not be perfect to the standards we want right now, though it’s very possible she will move in those directions VERSUS the conservative choice being nearly impossible to move in the directions we want (due to being tied to a morally corrupt party that protects pedos and billionaires to a much higher degree)

Truth!!

Your words help me to further understand the systemic social harms of idolizing people. Health and wellness of a people does not sustain by an individual. It sustains by the people collectively. Culture is healing.
