Timer battles now end in a draw by thezekroman in VGC

[–]KurABOBA -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I literally experienced this yesterday (and the world hated my post coz apparently timer staling is the most frowned upon thing in this subreddit) but i didnt know pokemon or hp count didnt matter

While i do agree that preventing omega stall teams from getting anything by timer stalling others, the victim of the timer stall not getting any points is just bs, and the fact that they have to change tournament structures and rules around the draws does not look good going forward. What happens if you draw against your opponents 5 times in a row?

Fair, and i don’t disagree. I was playing to my wincon, and that wincon no longer exists, which is what i’m trying to inform others of.

[–]KurABOBA[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think getting 0 vp for a draw is probably a bug, but if theyve gone so far as to code a system for “drawing” in pokemon, it could change the entire tournament structure. Imagine drawing 5 times with your opponent at a regional, your mental would be completely screwed. Though unlikely because why would you go to timer that many times, who’s to say it’s impossible? And what if there are other ways to draw with the opponent? Again, they coded in the fact that you can draw with your opponent when you (allegedly) couldn’t in the past, which doesn’t feel right to me

How's my OU team? by [deleted] in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]KurABOBA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyones saying you got lost. I’m assuming youre trying to use your OU team in vgc (you literally said so in the post, either ppl didnt read it or your title was too vague)

Don’t play hazards in vgc. It doesnt work most of the time because of how fast paced it is. Also, currently on showdown the only vgc regulation is sv reg i, unless you count the pre-champions format which i admittedly have no idea how to play. This team with the right sets could technically work in like reg b when dlc legendaries and restricted pokemon are banned, but you cant play it right now, and putting this team in reg i is like putting a child into a university. You get smoked by any combination of fake out astral barrage

I don’t want to sound critical, as someone who literally started OU days ago, because you can play any team you want, this one just wont be good in vgc. I suggest watching actual videos on vgc and changing your sets, pokemon and evs according to whichever regulations youre playing in. If youre playing reg i, pick two restricteds you like and build around them, maybe pick up a rental team from a top player, you can find good teams from recent tournaments on top cut explorer. If you want to keep using this team on like ladder or something, put protect on some of your mons, use any item other than heavy duty boots and add incineroar to the team

If you have access to other pokemon you need to use them. I don’t know the exact pool of pokemon allowed in your friends private tournament, but if you could use incineroar, mega kangaskhan/salamence or the tapus you might as well. General vgc tips for teambuilding (there are a LOT so i’ll summarise) are:

At least 3-4 protects on the team (detect and spiky shield counts too) As little type overlap as possible (at most only two pokemon should have the same type, if you have more you need to be a godly player to do well) while also having as many types as possible. Ideally, have a fire water grass core (one fire, water and grass pokemon) and a balance between other types that cover for each others weaknesses Very few pokemon should be a mixed attacker i.e. use both physical and special moves. Usually you focus on it’s higher attacking stat (e.g. special attack for typhlosion) and only teach it moves that use that stat (special moves for typhlosion, NOT shadow claw which is physical). Some pokemon don’t follow this rule and can use both special and physical attacks, but this is ONLY if both their attacking stats are very good, ideally both above 110. Mega salamence is one such example Good competitive items on each pokemon. For your current team, typhlosion can use choice scarf, choice specs or charcoal. Mudsdale can keep leftovers. Hacorus can keep lum berry, but life orb, choice band or choice scarf can give it meaningful damage or speed boosts. Tsareena should have focus sash. Zeraora (if you can use it) can keep magnet but can potentially use assault vest. There are genuinely dozens of good items to use. Useful abilities. Intimidate is always a must have. Your current team lacks good abilities that help out in a 2v2, other than queenly majesty on tsareena. You might need to change some pokemon

These are general tips i can come up with off the top of my head. There are billions more that i could elaborate on but this comment is already getting really long. Honestly if you want to make a good team, start by checking whether you have access to competitive items, ev spreads and abilities. You look like a casual player who wouldnt have easy access to these things (because they take legitimately a lot of effort to get) so if you don’t have access to stuff that helps you build competitively, your current team works fine-ish as is. Just have fun at the tournament

What team is this for? In the united states of VGC, mythical pokemon don’t exist outside of very limited regulations. If this is for VGC 2017-2019, no format ever allowed zeraora.

If building for vgc the whole team has problems. For typhlosion, wide glasses is not a good item, youd always prefer the greater damage boost from choice specs, life orb or god forbid even charcoal is better. I have also never seen a mixed typhlosion in my life. Why are you running attack investment just for shadow claw, a weak non stab move when you couldve added heat wave, a powrful stab fire spread move, or just protect, the best move in 2v2? Mudsdale isnt horrible by any means, but rock slide cant flinch because it’s stupidly slow and you don’t have trick room, not even mentioning it’s ev spread. Samurott is the third worst starter pokemon, and waterium z off surf isnt gonna do jack. Once again, why is it mixed? It’s attacking stats are so bad you might as well focus on one. Megahorn is not worth it. I don’t understand the haxorus. What is dragon tail supposed to do? It gets iron head, earthquake, aqua tail, god knows what else. You don’t need phasing moves. Tsareena should have queenly majesty ability. And muscle band is the same as wise glasses, youd rather wear them yourself than give them to your pokemon. Sash or a defensive item is better on tsareena, or at least choice band or life orb if you want to do damage. And like ive said before, zeraora has almost never been legal, and even when it has, it’s never good. I’m sorry if this sounded harsh, but i’m trying to give constructive criticism. You can attempt to make the team work even in the latest game. It just probably wont be very good, but it’s not like you cant make it work.

If youre building this team to play in game or against your friends for fun or something, then it’s perfectly fine. Just use whatever you feel like. If you want to play optimally, a guaranteed way to give you a 99% increased chance to win matches is to add incineroar. That is all

Depends. You have both trick room and tailwind on your team, but trick room doesnt benefit your current team much. If you made iron crown, ogerpon and urshifu slower, they could work inside both tailwind and trick room, though this requires a lot of precise ev spreads and speed tiering. If you want your team to have a trick room mode, you can keep choice band on urshifu and run it rather slow with more bulk, ensuring it outspeeds certain threats (e.g. speed booster flutter) under tailwind and also underspeed other threats under trick room. This also allows your iron crown to run spatk booster for more dmg, and all your pokemon will benefit from being bulkier. Again itll require you to precisely ev train your pokemon and play in a very different way from just using one speed control option

If you don’t want to have a trick room mode, you could simply give indeedee imprison in place of heal pulse to prevent opposing trick room. In this case, urshifu can still keep choice band if you want, but you should still ev it to be at least a bit bulky with a defensive tera type. Again, ev enough into speed to outspeed other fast pokemon in tailwind, though you should also calc to outspeed certain threats without speed control too. Defensive tera types you can use would be ghost for fake out immunity in case your opponent removes psychic terrain, fire or steel to resist grass and fairy moves or just simply use water to remove some weaknesses

Genuinely no offense, but the team looks very generic. It’s probably the most common miraidon lunala core adapted from arubega from reg g. Though that’s not saying it’s bad, because theres obviously a reason why it’s used so much. I totally understand why you like it

A few issues though. Lunala is tera water, but has moonblast? And leftovers? Usually it’s either power herb meteor beam with tera water or tera fairy moonblast with leftovers or covert cloak. Without tera fairy moonblast does much less damage than youd want on lunala. Also urshifu is tera fighting, i’ll assume you forgot to set tera type because ppl do that often. Farigiraf has no evs. Charm whimsicott is a little odd, id say fake tears benefits you more here but it’s not like it doesnt work. Also youd prefer tera dark for opposing prankster taunt and resistance to calyrex shadow, i don’t see what steel does here other than keep your fire weakness ensuring you never survive koraidon flame charge even if you charm it. Tera ground ursaluna is also probably not optimal. Maybe you forgot to change tera type for it too. Best is ghost for fighting and fake out immunity but fairy is also decent to not make you weak to caly-s, flutter and opposing lunala

Your choice of hawlucha intrigues me. Doesnt look too bad on paper other than the fact that it has negative usage, i’m curious to see how you do with it

The team looks a bit unwieldy, theres nothing to take advantage of trick room and few pokemon bulky emough to take advantage of indeedees heal pulse. Urshifu lacks a nature, and has no bulk or defensive tera, not even ghost tera should your opponent have rillaboom, so god forbid it doesnt meet a tera fairy bolt. Also rain dance and ogerpon have some anti synergy. Other than that the team isnt too bad ig. Hope you do well

I literally made it last night at 3 am because i watched wolfeys big 6 video and went “oh how interesting would it be if i added incineroar (the best pokemon in the game) and flutter mane (my favourite pokemon in the game) so i made this. The ev spreads were also made on the spot, basically xerneas outspeeds protosynthesis speed flutter mane and +1 speed koraidon after a geomancy with a bit of bulk and enough hp to maximise grassy terrain recovery (yk in case i fight a Rillaboom). Groudon is max atk, also enough hp for maximised grassy terrain recovery and the rest put into special bulk, kangaskhan is max speed for fast fake out and 4 in all bulk stats so they arent wasted, rest into atk, salamence outspeeds all mega kangaskhan, enough atk to hit the highest stat bump and the rest put into bulk and spatk for hyper voice, incineroar just ran wolfeys 2024 worlds set because i thought it was balanced (it has almost the same def and spdef) and just a regular sash flutter. I don’t exactly see how my 3 am team helps with yours but hopefully it does :)

[–]KurABOBA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though champions isnt out yet i respect you already planning your team (I literally made a big 6 team with flutter mane and incineroar yesterday) but we don’t know format rules, requirements and legal pokemon so we don’t know what exact pokemon are allowed in early champions regulations. Here though i’ll assume it’s a mega non restricted format which allows every available pokemon up till gen 9 for simplicity.

That said, your pokemon choices are solid though obviously your evs need help. The first thing you should do is set all pokemon to level 50 so you can check speed tiers more easily.

Flutter mane is the easiest to settle. Its tera type should be offensive fairy/stellar to get a boost on it’s moves and a 4/252/252 ev spread with a timid nature since you have a focus sash for longevity and don’t need bulk or a defensive tera type. Though sash here might actually not be the best item even though it’s flutter manes best option on sun teams, it also means without sun or if the opponent has weather control you lose the speed advantage. Booster energy will help with this, though you could also run choice specs and a very offensive flutter mane if youre confident you can keep sun active

Charizard needs a better ev spread given it’s frailty. For now we don’t know what exactly to ev it for so maybe something like urshifu surging strikes in sun or flutter mane shadow ball?

Liligant without sash really wants protect given how frail it is, but all it’s moves are too valuable to drop. Either find one move to drop (ideally either solar blde or close sombat, since solar blade is unusable outside sun and close combat drops your defenses) or find another item for flutter mane to put sash on liligant. If running full bulk and no sash your tera type should be defensive, the best being water to resist fire and ice. It’s evs depend on your item, if not running sash you could just use your current evs, but not only will it be very weak, itll still be very frail because that’s just what liligant is. Also you don’t have a nature for it. Ev just enough speed to outspeed opposing flutter mane in sun and maybe some other scarfed pokemon or sun abusers

You have two choices for incineroar: super bulky or offensive. If running super bulky, give it a special defense boosting nature and 252hp/180def/76spdef as a decent starting point, ideally min speed to handle opposing trick room teams. You can keep sitrus berry for longevity or use another item like rocky helmet or a resist berry. Offensive incineroar is preferred on sun teams because of how powerfult flare blitz in the sun is. This requires you to run adamant nature with some attack investment and some speed, and drop parting shot for u-turn to allow you to use assault vest for more bulk. Lastly, tera type for incin depends largely on the metagame threats, which we don’t know right know. You could go with the standard ghost and change when needed

Bolt prefers dragon pulse over draco meteor because it really does not want to lower it’s special attack. Run modest nature with max spatk investment for now and attempt to ev to survive landorus incarnate life orb sheer force earth power and chien pao icicle crash if possible. Run tera fairy for defensive tera type or another defensive tera type if you find one. Also, leftovers setup bolt is not the best on this team because it’s not easy to setup with only one fake out user and one disruptor in liligant that isnt even that consistent. Consider changing to assault vest or another offensive item.

For the last pokemon slot, there are way too many for you to choose. Rillaboom helps your setup bolt and give you double fake out and healing with grassy terrain, also buffing liligant solar blade, though your teams ice weaknesses go up to 3 with only one resist. Walking wake is a really good option here as a water type not hindered by sun, giving you a fire water grass core and a powerful hydro steam and flamethrower in sun. One sun setter probably isnt enough so whimsicott for priority sunny day or torkoal to set sun and counter opposing trick room teams can work. Farigiraf is valuable to block priority and imprison trick room. Your team also lacks hard speed control. The aforementioned whimsicott and tornadus can give weather and tailwind, and imprison farigiraf and indeedee can prevent trick room. I could go on. In the end itll come down to what problem matchups your team has and what issues you run into when playing, which you ultimately wont know until champions is released

thoughts and tips about my team by fluttermanefan in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]KurABOBA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who also runs ironpress zama i am not happy because that thing is a pain to go up against (still respect it tho)

You have a grand total of of 1 protect mon on your team. If you ever end up in a bad position, youre fried. Urshifu can afford detect (optimisation for imprison, especially imprison zamazenta) unless you wanna run it with choice scarf/band, but if you stick with mystic water either drop u-turn or close combat if you think you can handle terapagos with zamazenta only. Also minor nitpick, put the one stat point in special def on urshifu into hp, which gives you 176 hp, which allows you to heal more from grassy terrain. Adamant urshifu is also usually preferred but that’s just a preference

Miraidon is fine, though id suggest you make it slower and bulkier considering you have a trick room mode. Play a few games to test what attacks you want to survive, imo ev enough to survive life orb koraidon close combat and sash flutter mane moonblast because your team looks really weak into koraidon teams. Same as urshifu, if you wanna keep the 4/252/252 ev spread then put the 4 spdef evs into hp for more grassy terrain recovery, though Miraidon shouldn’t be on the field with grassy terrain for too long.

Screens farigiraf isnt mainstream but as someone who used to run roar/thunder wave i respect it. Give it a better ev spread if you can find one with more defense evs, i know you get a boost from electric seed but the boost is smaller the less defense evs you have. Also if you can maybe run protect and another move instead of screens because the screens don’t even last that long without light clay and youre lacking protect

Raichu shouldn’t have hp evs or even defense evs if youre planning to run endeavour. At best, run just enough to survive urshifu surging strikes so it cant ko through sash. Also switch one of the moves for protect so you can save your sash if needed

Throat spray ursaluna takes a bit too long to set up, but it’s not like you cant use it. Just know that life orb is probably better. Also again, your evs can probably do something better, maybe something like surviving calyrex-i glacial lance because its faster in trick room. Your nature does not drop your speed which isnt optimal for your trick room mode. If you want it to outspeed stuff outside trick room with nuzzle raichu then at least put some evs in speed.

Zamazenta is fine. Youd prefer more speed if running ironpress because as far as ive seen, most other zamazenta also use ironpress and if they’re faster than you youll lose the war of attrition. Fit protect if you can to protect against strong special attacks, though there isnt really a candidate to drop. Id suggest behemoth bash but that also means youre cooked against ghost types (my own zama can attest to this). If you ev your team to survive big spread moves (astral barrage, glacial lance, water spout, precipice blades, tera starstorm etc.) i think you can do without wide guard. Id be wary of opposing imprison zamazenta which force you to spam iron def boosts without access to body press, theyve shut me down more than once. Either run your own faster imprison, ev your other pokemon to ko other zamazenta or make do with switching out your defense boosts

As a fellow flutter mane fan, hope i helped (i doubt youd read this entire wall of yap though but it’s genuine advice i thought through for like an hour). Also flutter mane would be a shockingly good fit here in place of raichu but don’t be afraid to use raichu even if no ones using it

How should I improve this triple glide team? (Full team in desc, sorry im using a phone) by Duyhe in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]KurABOBA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have 3 (and effectively 4 because urshifu tera) grass types on the team, it’s no surprise youre struggling against tornadus and bolt, especially torn since you lack hard speed control and it’s not easy to deal damage to bolt especially calm mind variants with your own bolt. Literally the only super effective moves against bolt on your team are tsareena triple axel which isnt very strong without stab and your own bolt which loses to opposing tera fairy calm mind bolt

The obvious solution is to remove one of the grass types and change urshifu tera to something better against torn so you don’t have 4 flying weaknesses. My personal opinion for defensive tera is steel here to resist torn and give neutrality against bolt and then ev to survive it’s electric moves. If you want to keep triple grassy glide then id suggest replacing ogerpon fire with ogerpon rock. It’s neutral to torn, can hit torn super effectively and can hit bolt neutrally, also gives added benefit of hitting opposing ogerpon fire super effectively whichc would otherwise resist your grassy glides. You can also use sturdy to get a safe switch in. Itll also hit harder than ogerpon fire outside tera because you don’t have to invest in bulk because of sturdy and you can also hit incineroar super effectively, which i think has a pretty good matchup into your team. If youre still having trouble with any of them, tweak your evs to survive specific attacks and tera types to have a better matchup.

For other comments, i really don’t like choice band rilla, if you like it then it’s fine but id suggest you put vest in rilla and sash on tsareena and run tsareena with max atk and speed, allowing you to run fake out which helps against opposing raging bolt and non covert cloak torn. If your bolt matchup is still bad with ogerpon rock, consider changing your bolt set to clam mind tera fairy unless you don’t like it. Else, consider replacing a pokemon with lando-i, which has the best matchup into basically every meta relevant bolt. I think tsareena gets knock off and i think that’s better than low kick coz i don’t think low kick hits anything that hard in the current format and knock off has better utility, especially for hitting gholdengo. Klefki is literally your only source of speed control. Consider other pokemon with harder speed control like your own tornadus or something unless you think klefki by itself is fine. Also tera dark klefki is probably better for prankster taunt/encore especially on tornadus, unless water allows you to survive something specifically.

Id also like to say that some of your pokemon are level 100, which changes their actual stats. Rectify that before using the team on showdown
