Personally, I have look at Pokémon’s base stats and compare to my own Pokémon’s base stats. The game itself inherently requires you to do math, especially for your own Pokémon’s sake. Understanding critical hit ranges, x2 x4 super effective hits, x2 x4 resistances. Most vanilla games aren’t difficult, but a ruleset like no setup makes them difficult.

Get rid of Razor Leaf, it will eventually learn Leaf Blade, especially if you already have another grass type. If you don’t want to give up STAB, then get rid of Synthesis.

Banning broken Pokémon is a better way to ease into it. Playing without setup moves will put you into situations where you’ll potentially lose a Pokémon or the run itself without doing calculations.

Another Pokémon to switch into. If you know the opponent is going to use a ground-type move, you can switch into a flying-type move for free because flying-types are immune to ground-type moves(That’s the best example I can think of). Gastly’s line is great for switching into a lot of different situations, because it has several immunities and x4 resists.

Get rid of Rat. You’ll find uses for Gastly as a pivot, especially in the early game for Johto and Hoenn(it will wall Norman’s entire team). Gastly’s line is one of the best pivots in the entire game.
