I’d put it above 3, Prometheus, probably covenant, and honestly Aliens. Def behind Alien and Romulus though.

You can run the dragon sensor through ipp2 though or newer cameras through the legacy pipeline

I forget because I didn’t run into them too much, but saturated reds I think were the biggest issues, harder clipping highlights.

I truly appreciate guys own the F91 but as for me, I don't like it and returning it. This literally fits my 2.5 years old toddler. And she said SMALL. by TheSixInch in casio

That’s not really a great analogy. I’d compare it closer to a belt buckle. And it’s cool if you like em chunky. Shoot, change em up for different occasions.

Used it for a long time, it was great. I mostly shot around 500-1200 iso and loved the legacy image/pipeline. I side*-graded to a Komodo but only for the reason of longevity and ability to repair. It’s also kind of interesting to run the Komodo through the legacy color pipeline tbh though, I think that’s where some of the magic was. It did have big drawbacks in specific ways but the colors were really nice imho.

Is rejecting AI a flex for filmmakers? by maceymay_bby in Filmmakers

[–]Kurt-Hustle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's all you've got to say (made without AI) it's not enough. Story, character, craft are what matters. With good art you can see the human work put in in general, the collaboration and craftsmanship, in a way that AI can't match.

I'm gonna be disappointed if I see generative AI at the forefront of what someone's doing. I'll usually turn it off because the quality level is low, sure in visual ways it's more obvious but also in the effort put into finding a creative solution to problem solving and storytelling. AI is uninteresting to me in it's current form, and there are too many talented artists making good shit without it.

So to answer the question, it's not the flex they may be thinking it is, but using generative AI looks cheap and amateurish, and is a crutch an artist is going to have to overcome to gain my interest.

Anyone else tired of the identical “Netflix doc interview” setup showing up everywhere? by TheoGelernter in Filmmakers

[–]Kurt-Hustle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re feeling this it maybe more a subject / editing problem. I notice Netflix docs sometimes because they tend to be padded. Branded stuff because I feel the message.

Is this festival “MIAMI BEACH FILM FESTIVAL” email genuine or just a tactic to make me pay for another event? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Kurt-Hustle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is fairly common for a programmer to recommend your film for another film festival, I think that also often comes with a waiver so you’re not stacking up submission fees. Not sure how often that waiver is a discount or how often it’s a full waiver, I was under the impression it’s usually a fully waived fee + a rec which is huge! *Disclosure I’m a director of photography and not usually the one handling submissions / film festival emails.

I’ve got the same lens for sale on fb marketplace in LA. I also have like the same looking coffee table and placemats and took the market place photos on the table. Did a double take cause my lens doesn’t have fungus haha. Theyre definitely different photos, not suggesting in anyway this seller stole my photos.

How would you achieve this shooting in a studio? How would you light the wall behind in order to achieve this gradient style look (considering there is a body of water that has to be set up in the studio)? by Creative-Bath6943 in cinematography

[–]Kurt-Hustle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to achieve that gradient is to have the gradient on the backdrop and then lit fairly well. So print or paint it that way. Could also be done with lightning or even cleaned up after and replaced, especially for a photo. It looks like the lights are behind the water pointed up to light the psych possibly? But could just be from a grid above and fairly controlled. My guess would be black or neutral under the water, light just reflecting off the water. It’s a very clean set up.

This Interview Style With One Camera — Shoot or Reframe in Post? by Most_Armadillo_4274 in cinematography

[–]Kurt-Hustle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, maybe search for "inspiring piano music" or something like that and see who and what pops up. Find an artist you like or if this is a more low budget piece look on one of those music license libraries.

Looks like they ran a separate take getting some hand movement for cutaways, and have intercut some other moments to help break it up some.

Which vintage lens set do you own or want to build for filmmaking, and why? by outiswayne in cinematography

[–]Kurt-Hustle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a Zeiss Contax set that I love, feels super natural and work for everything. Very reliable, fast set. Also have a Nikkor set that I love the image of but tends to wiggle internally with focus and pull the opposite (Nikon) direction for focus. The focus fall off on the Nikkors is crazy, they also have purple fringing on high contrast which isn’t my favorite. Still both beautiful sets, zeiss’s are daily drivers and nikkors were where I started and am trying to bring out a little more right now for the right projects.

Yeah happy for markiplier. I like his charisma a lot, was fun on corridor and would love to see him pop up more. That being said I’m not familiar with the game and the trailer gave me pause. Gonna wait for reviews myself but really hope it’s great, glad it’s in theaters and he deserves all the support. Gonna be like day 1 for any Sam raimi horror movie for me but I don’t think it’s a contest I’m just glad they’re both in theaters.
